Don't feed the scammers
There are many many sites out there charging US$100 or more for MAME sets. It is in direct response to their actions that the Tombstone Group was formed. Due to some provider problems they were shutdown for a time. To keep the scammers from taking over during their absence, Lazarus and FreeMAMERoms took over.
There maybe other burning groups, these are just the ones I am aware of.
If you want to know what I mean by scammers do a Google for "Emu on CD" for a Brazillian site. (Please don't give them any money) -
Re:roms
Ask and ye shall receive: the tombstone project, while not a download site, will sell you a complete set of MAME ROM's on CD or DVD. Or you can go to eBay and look for people selling the exact same thing.

You can get all the ROMS here!
mame.dk, never heard of them.
However I have heard of the MAME burners, The Tombstone Project, and Rom-Mania!.
Not only can you obtain MAME ROMS, but you can get all the ROMS for all your old systems. I was able to ressurect my Intellivision, Commodore 64, Amiga 1000, MS-PacMan Machine, and Nintendo 64 on my PC.
I thought about putting together a project to contact all the ROM license holders and see how much they would want for the copyrights. We (the collective we) would then all contribute to a fund that would be used to buy the licenses and place them into the Public Domain. I personally contacted a few license holders and the response was quite negative.
It seems that the large corporations which own the licenses and copyrights don't want us emulating old games, but instead want us to go buy NEW game systems. They aren't the most nostalgic bunch and I am glad that all these old treasures have been preserved through emulators.
Fast Forwarding, you can play MAME on XBOX now :) Imagine every arcade console game ever made burned onto a single DVD. This would be the killer XBOX app! Bill has got the money to make it happen. It could be his gift to the world, but we will never see it. -
The Real Thing
Yeah, books are nice, but there's nothing like the real thing. Ever desired to own almost every video game ever made? Yeah, everyone knows about MAME, but perhaps you don't know about Tombstones, which is network of volunteers who will send you CD-ROMS of all of the MAME roms -- for about $7. 3,486 roms (about 1900 unique games, I think).
It's unbelievable how much game you can put in about 4K of ROM space.
Now, what I want to know is when is SOMEONE going to make a hardware emulator of Death Race. The schematics are available on the web. [it didn't you use a microprocessor... all electronic! ]

Re:Speaking of this...
Hey fuckwit, they're under no obligation to provide ROMs to you. Don't be so fucking self-righteous - I have yet to see *you* make your personal stash of ROMs publically available.
Really?

Second one down, that's me. Same as the nick here. ROMs free for all (at least in the US)
Unless you were talking to the other guy. I don't see how I'm being self rightous. -
Re:Speaking of this...
If you're looking for ROMs, visit http://www.tombstones.org.uk, which will burn the ROMs for you for free, or for the price of materials/shipping.
And as for you, Mr "I had wrote a program to download all roms from the site (heh) not long before it closed" people like you are one of the reasons it stopped serving ROMs.
The first reason being that, being contacted by a copyright holder to remove one ROM, they elected instead to remove them all (well, almost, Robby Roto (I think) and two other 'legal' ROMs are still available) thinking that since they were contacted by one, likely they'd be contacted by more.
So, to avoid legal hassle, they all went.
The second reason, I suspect, is because of the massive bandwidth requirements to serve all those ROMs. They operated almost soley on donations. I contributed what I could, when I could. Can you say the same?
Innocent_Lamb, are you reading this? Can you offer more insight? -
Overkill? Not bloody likely
Obviously you've had little or no experience with MAME.
Yes, for the 'classics' its' quite overkill. I've got MAME .36 running on a 486, and it runs Pac Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, etc quite well.
However, when I want to bust out and kick some ass in Mortal Kombat III, the 486 just doesn't do it justice. Out comes the Athlon, and watch the body parts fly.
For more information on MAME, see news://alt.games.mame or http://www.mame.net or the alt.games.mame website at http://www.tombstones.org.uk (where you can also see my mugshot, ugly as it is) -
Re:www.mame.dk
Oh, for crying out loud. Every time an emulation topic comes up someone bemoans the loss of mame.dk. It's not and never was the end all of places dedicated to the acquisition of games. Here:
Miss Mame Roms Resources
Go there. Even if you can't manipulate the pages to find the same things that mame.dk had (which you should be able to), you can at least find the mame burners website which is completely valid.
Google is a useful tool. It will help if you just ask.
Besides, there's always newsgroups.
