He should try some of the HiQ societiesThere are some really good High IQ societies that maintain online forums, journals, mixers, etc. Several, especially the MegaGuild, have programs oriented toward gifted youths.
These groups include:- The MegaGuild (IQ 180+)
- The MegaBoard (IQ 164+)
- The Ultranet (IQ 164+)
- The Prometheus Society (IQ 164+)
- The Triple Nine Society (IQ 150+)
- Mensa (IQ 132+)
There are quite a few others out there, but I can vouch for the quality of these from personal experience. - The MegaGuild (IQ 180+)

death of irc?
All of this is contributing, unfortunately, to the Death of IRC

Moderation error? (was: Re:Remakes!)
Why is it that the "Remakes!" post got a 3, but the exactly-equally-relevant reply (about the associated mailing list) is stuck on 0? (Do only people who are registered qualify for positive scores?)
BTW, the link to the list is this... -

Topica easter egg
i put this one in Topica's website on the day we launched (February something or other 1999) and it's still there (even tho most of the staff has since rotated out).
go to the topica directory, find Reptiles and Amphibians, there's a "hidden" clickable image just under the white on blue number towards the bottom of the page. click it.
there was also a better one in the works that directed users to a flash animation, but i left the company before building it into the site.
ah nostalgia. -
topica == free
Topica runs groups for free. I actually prefer them over yahoo because they have a "one click" unsubscription URL at the bottom of each email.

Works fine in M$ Windoze but, Linux has had a little bit of trouble, nothing crazy, but sound, modem, easy stuff like that, that should work doesnt. This is just an informational post to let yous guys know that this is happening.

Re:Cringely demonstrating his ignorance yet again>I'm too lazy to do the research... can anybody else come up with power consumption numbers for Bluetooth vs. SPIKE?
Transmit power:
Spike: mW 0.75 mW
Bluetooth: Class 1: 1 to 100 mW
Class 2: 0.25 to 2.5 mW
Class 3: 1 mW>Didn't some company come up with a chip that increases Bluetooth range?
The higher powered devices are supposed to be capable of up to 100 meters.
You can check to see if there are any Qualified Products in that classification.

Re:price seems a bit whackyThe CSR chips are quoted at $8 and I have not seen any vendor quoting more than $30. You can get PCMCIA cards from Digianswer, Toshiba, IBM, Motorola, etc. for less than $200.
Cambridge Silicon Radio is saying that they will ship their new chip at about $5 sometime this year.
It sounds to me like SPIKE will be the real follow-on replacement for IR (IrDA) and that it will actually bring us the kind of connectivity which was promised there but never delivered (well, maybe it was delivered but it was rarely used).
Bluetooth (tm) brings us a different kind of connectivity for a different purpose and it looks to me like they both have a place, as do Wi-Fi (802.11b) and CDMA/GPRS/UMTS. [ a place for everything and everything in its place ]
I am certain that many technologies will be mis-used in the future and I am sure that some people will be very happy about that and others less happy. We have seen lots of examples over the years (beta-max/vhs; Linux/MacOS/Unix/Windows; [give me a command line and get out of my way])
I have no doubt that we will see Wireless LAN's built using Bluetooth (tm) and that someone will add Service Discovery to some 802.11(b/a/g/e) implementation. It will not matter to consumers whether those are mis-applications of the technology.
What will matter to them is:
What do I find on the store shelf when I go looking for a solution?
Does it work how I think it should work?
Is it easy to use, easy to set up, etc?

Re:PCI HDTVIt isn't FUD, Mr. A.C.
If you are seriously interested in the subject, subscribe to the OpenDTV mailing list (OpenDTV at topica.com) and read the message archives. Beware, this is a high-volume mailing list.
The short symbol length in the ATSC standard makes it vulnerable to multipath. There is also a problem with too few bits allocated to the training sequence.

Hey, just get off your ass and roll your own...
Stop bitching and moaning. Get your 501(c)(12) and crank'er up. Community organizations can do this, don't let a few corporations control your life blood and the communication medium of the future. For all the supposed technical expertise on
/. you'd think we'd be rolling in public broadband alternatives.Shesh, mental masturbation can only get you so far in life...

Getting speakers: Go through the P.R. departmentFunny you should ask this, because I'm on the other side of the equation: I'm a public relations flack looking for speaking engagements for executives at two client companies (Topica and one other I can't announce yet).
For small organizations (i.e., under 25 full-time staff people), you can probably contact the proposed speaker directly. You might have to go through a secretary: Be courteous and follow their rules. The speakers will probably make arrangements themselves.
Organizations of 25-75 people often have a dedicated Public Relations Manager to handle such things: Ask for them. They in turn might send you to a freelancer or small agency, who'll make the arrangements.
With companies of this size and bigger, they probably won't be interested unless:
- You can deliver audience members who are in their target markets
- You can deliver large, high-profile audiences ("opinion leaders"), and/or
- The talk is convenient for them.
:)Finally, for bigger organizations (75+ full-time staff), you may have to deal with the organization's P.R. firm. Go to their Web site, look under the "About us" button, then to the "Press" section. If they don't list a press contact, look for contact names and numbers on press releases.
Don't be discouraged if they turn you down, and feel free to pester them if they don't return your emails and phone calls within a week. Good luck!
