Broken link...
The real link to the Temple of the Lemur is
http://totl.net
and the link to the Spudserver page is
http://totl.net/Spud/
All that aside, I think this is really cool. Reminds me of something I saw on MacGuyver, when he powered his alarm clock on a potato.
I would also like to beat the Beowulf trolls to the punch by saying that such a thing would dramatically improve the economy in Idaho.

oops
that should *probably* read:
http://totl.net/Eunuch/index.htmlhttp://www.dansdata.com/sbs3.htm is also an interesting read...

Extrem OverclockingOf course extreme overclocking requires extreme cooling. If you go here, you can read about an over-clocking experiment involving a 486sx25, a freezer, and unnatural amounts of alcohol.
they tried various options with good results. They had the computer running in the freezer
Towards the end, things got hazy. To quote:
Accounts of the remainder of the experiment (everything after the celebration) are somewhat sketchy at best.
It would appear that after all the motherboard jumpers were removed for storage, someone accidently powered the system up. This caused the whole setup to run uncontrollably fast.
Fortunately, one of the technicians (the one who had destroyed the least of the "coolant") had the presence of mind to check the clock speed...
247MHz!
There was only one thing to do. Halflife.
Completely playable, the game ran fine for 2 minutes and 34 seconds (or 3 minutes 12 seconds, depending on who you listen to...) then crashed horribly.
By this time however, the processor was utterly wrecked. As was the motherboard.
And the power supply, graphics card, soundcard and RAM. Most of the Holy Spirits had boiled too.
some very interesting photos too

Actually, you might want to check these guys out. Scary...

Now *thats* serious :)
Holy shit! I don't know if I could possibly believe this one, but just the thought of clocking an SX-25 to 247 MHz and playing Half-Life on it (even for only 3 minutes or so :)) is friggin awesome. :) Thanks so much for the link!

Couple of comments...
Just a few things that may/may not have been said already.
First of all, why is this particular product being highlighted? I've seen at least 8 other companies making these. Not to mention that making your own is a simple matter for a first-year EE student.
Second, why do I see so much pooh-poohing of overclocking in this discussion? I think one of my happiest hardware moments was when I got my K6-2 380 to run stably at 500Mhz. Believe me there *was* a performance difference, and I don't really play 3D games. Now that I just got my Athlon 650, I'm assembling the parts to make my own "goldenfingers." I see many accounts of 650's doing 750 and 800 without a problem, and without modifying the cache divisor.
Speaking of the Athlon, damn. I'm very impressed with this chip. I have never been this close to the "bleeding edge" before, and it's a neat feeling. It takes less then 6 minutes to do a complete kernel build (dep, clean, bzImage, modules, etc.), 3 SETI@Home packets a day, and I can turn on almost all the bells and whistles in E with no problems.
If you dont want to overclock, don't. I wouldn't do it on a mission-critical machine, but it's a thrilling feeling the first time you boot up faster then before.

Re:..Money Needs To Go Into This..
You may have heard of SETI? Well, there's another project rather similar to that, except they are trying to find intelligent life on Earth. Check out their website.

Better than fridge & booze technique...
Great, now I can take my motherboard out of the freezer and pound that vodka I was using get the cooling for those last few Mhz!

Re:BEER!
Yes, but if we've learned anything from the overclocked 247MHz 486SX (which we haven't), it's that hard liquor makes computers run much faster than beer.

It's kinda hard to find...
Direct link is here
Yes, this was definitely a repost of a Quickie-bit. -
Re:URouLette
That's rather boring. Try a real URLoulette, where you can actually win stuff : (you'll need to set up a vCash wallet first though).

Re:PNG all the way!Nah, GIF animations can be annoying, but if they are annoying, it's more the fault of the designer of the animation than animations themselves.
Animated GIFs can be used very effectivley : see here for examples.
