So Much Music is So Bad
Today I decided to try to find some music. I visited no less than 5 different stores. I listened to maybe 35-40 different albums using the in-store headphones (yuck!) but I was less than impressed. Album after album sucked, with at best 2 good songs per album.
While I'm complaining here, I have to say that I really don't like the extra material on CDs, and I really can't stand CDExtra. The material slows down my computer, makes it crash some times, and generally is pretty lame. It often autoruns too, which drives me crazy. In short, I am inclined to avoid the new-and-improved CDs even if I think I'll like the band. How do you feel about this?
Earlier today, I was thinking (contemplating really) about how I buy music on eBay or used on Amazon or trade on Trodo. I decided that I like that approach much better than buying from a store. eBay is at least 1/2 price off and often you can even get new CDs for a low price. On Amazon, you can often get a music preview, so there is no advantage to visiting a brick and mortar (do people still say that?) music store. And, to top it all off, I can find music I like faster on the web. I can find recommended music, related music in the right genres, and more. It is easier and cheaper. So, can anyone explain wny I should actually visit a store? (My only answer is instant gratification -- I can buy and listen immediately.) -
How about something like Trodo?
http://trodo.com ? Don't know if there is source code available, but I think it is a PHP/MySQL app... That might be a good starting point.

"Trade it on Trodo!"
I think you're basically describing Trodo, a one-for-one media swapping service.
There's problems with it's business model (Ex: ANY 'Book' is one 'credit' - So a moth-eaten copy of 'The Two Towers' is worth as much as an obscure out-of-print short story collection.), but my limited experience so far (one taken, one given.) has been good.

Re:Trodo
I strongly disagree; this is definitely on topic. There has been little attention paid to other business models for sharing music. Read through the rest of the postings and you will see that people are asking how they can get hard-to-find music. They are talking about sharing music with other people. They are talking about music sharing communities. Trodo allows for exactly this kind of activity so posting information about it is a good idea.

Trodo
We just launched a web site that is sort of like a free eBay or maybe something like an offline Napster: Trodo.com. What is Trodo? "Trodo is a place to trade stuff. It is a friendly barter system. It is a bazaar. It is place to swap stuff. It is a place to share. It is a place to meet people who have stuff you want. It is a place to find out-of-date and hard to find stuff. It is a place to give people stuff you don't want, and to get stuff they don't want." This is a legal, (currently) free, and easy way to exhcange stuff with other people, like CDs and books. After you pay for something and use it, trade it away and get something in return. As I said, we literally just launched. What do you think?

United Nations -- Iraq -- Weapons Inspections
This doesn't surpise me at all. On National Public Radio today (All Things Considered) a researcher was talking about the best research tool for tracking down weapons of mass destruction: a 4" x 4" cotton swab. They run the swab over almost any surface and can detect radioactive material to the level of 1 part per billion. Geeez.
