There is the Tumbleweed House Company, they sell blue prints for _small_ houses. Not exactly the same as targeting price, but I'm sure there's a lot of overlap.

This is the trick to get around the obtuse American building laws. Make it a trailer. Still a lot more than $1000.00 if you go nuts, but you could build one for around that price if you were good with scavenging and built it yourself.

I am not a backyard architect, but even if this modular or prefab home was cool looking like a Rocio Romero and was able to meet laws and deed restrictions, if this is any sort of nice urban place, you would probably be instantly hated by all of your neighbors. I like these kinds of houses though and also took an interest to tiny houses and some of the modern designs at freegreen.com. I unfortunately just can't build one in my neighborhood, and would have to build it in the local trailer park, which is a low class area I would not want my child to grow up in. As much as I dislike having my cookie cutter home, there are other factors to consider.

Nah. If you live in one of those tiny houses, all you have to do is hitch it to your truck, and tow it to someplace with a really big window. And then you'd be able to claim for the rest of your life that you'd defenestrated your house. If I ever win the lottery, I'm totally doing this.
