We are training the younger like dogs. No dog ever solved anything in physics. Open the younger to experimentation (and then the maths), there will be massive progress.

But this is not for today. We came in 4 centuries from publish and perish to publish or perish. Too much quantity = less quality. The Einstein Ph.D dissertation was 14 pages. High quality, innovative, deep. Far better than any 300+ pages I have encountered.

If methane was a serious problem, the must have been a huge one at the end of the last ice age, when there was a lot more permafrost thawing up and releasing methane than there is even in existence today. Alas, it wasn't.

If methane was the harbinger of a climate apocalypse, the apocalypse should have happened long ago.

Jupiter appears to be near the breakaway point. Saturn, despite being much further, might receive more energy from the Sun than it radiates. Earth receives four orders of magnitude more than it generates internally.

I wonder if the RIAA has paid royalties on russian folk songs like Shchedryk lately? Just like Disney, steal from the public domain, and then sue anyone who dares repeat the performance again without their permission.

in general, once the waves hit the open ocean, it IS a straight line path. Islands will tend to absorb waves, "creating shadow patterns". There is an excellent analysis here:

OK, some of you guys might be surprised that the first author of the paper is a female astrophyics professor; a picture of her can be found here.

I really have to critize The Register. How can there be an article about astronomy without a single picture ? How can there be any scientific article without a picture ? They don't even cite correctly or give a link to a site where you can get further information, either the site of the original scientists or at least the site where one can find the article (which is, btw, P. Ruiz-Lapuente et al., Nature vol431, p.1069). Amateurs!

Barcelona, Belgium, Japan, Cambridge Uni (the n hundred year version), Italy and Korea are just some of the places running Beowolf clusters. Its already out there, stop the shipping from the US of PCs and the software and it will be picked up from one of these places outside the US.
