Re:Hrm...
You're thinking of Ubuntu Studio, and yes I agree that it is pretty silly that they're making what is essentially Ubuntu + a few extra packages and a different theme. But at the same time, that's what is so great about Linux: anyone can make their own "version", anyone can do anything they want with it. It doesn't matter how stupid it is.
IMO Making a single "one size fits all" distro would completely defeat the purpose of Linux. -
Re:Why buy separate?"bunch of disjoint shareware utilities"
Who told you the code name of the next Ubuntu release?
Kidding of course, I'm posting from my new install of Ubuntu Studio.

Re:Ardour runs on mac!
I note that even more popular than Ardour 2 on linux is Ardour 2 on Mac OSX.
Eh? Ardour has only just been ported to the Mac. Many people have been running Ardour on Linux for years.
Regardless, I wouldn't want to run a DAW used for production on an Aqua, Gnome or KDE desktop environment. The ideal is a low-latency Linux kernel, an RME Hammerfall and a light WM/DE like Fluxbox or XFCE - that's before we start talking about the metal (fast IDE transfer, RAM and PCI (or firewire) bus speeds).
While Ubuntu Studio looks super, I think these guys have the right idea. -
Re:Will anyone gain anything from this? Not Linux
it's still useless as a home computer as it does not run a decent video editing software or videogames.
I'm in the middle of installing Quake 4 - isn't that what you would consider a "videogame"?
As for the video editing, keep your eye on http://www.ubuntustudio.org/ -

Re:Rosegarden and Ardour
Also, fresh from the Firehose, is a link to Ubuntustudio. It's not out yet, but seems like a more desktop user-friendly sort.
