It's not just AIM, but Netscape.net mail users too
My sister called me a couple days ago telling me that she cannot log into her netscape.net e-mail account. I wasn't sure if if she was hacked, but now it's all adding up. First there is the "Massive Layoffs at AOL" and then I read several forums last night about the same issue. It almost makes me wonder if some disgruntled employee decided to take out some customers on the way out. (Note that this is purely speculation.) As if AOL weren't already having enough problems....

Mozilla has itMozilla/Netscape 7 has form management features built-in, but most people don't know about it because it's stupidly buried under the Tools menu.
If the prospect of using a program called Mozilla terrifies her and you don't want all the extra crap that comes standard with Netscape, use SillyDog's steamlined Netscape. Then add the mother-friendly pop-up blocking feature back and she should be good to go.

Re:Mozilla vs. Netscape
I like the first, but I don't like the second. Is it possible to add the ICQ integration to Mozilla, or, alternatively, to add the pop-up killer to Netscape?
You might be able to do the first by copying some files from a Netscape directory to a Mozilla directory, but I wouldn't count on it.
To add pop-up blocking to Netscape 7, follow this link, and then read the instructions. (Instructions are 'Click over here!')

Re:CNet Review - "Don't switch browsers"
Then again anything is better than IE. Plus, you CAN turn on popup-blocking. Most people just don't know how.
(btw, shouldn't people like the reporters for CNET do some basic google'ing before they say it doesn't have popup-blocking, I mean it's not that hard to find this. -
Re:CNet Review - "Don't switch browsers"
I haven't seen an example of how it "Displays AOL ads everywhere" as mentioned in the CNET review. I wonder if CNET and I downloaded and installed the same software.
As posted here on slashdot, there is a way to disable pop-ups. Sounds like CNET had a bone to pick. -
Re:It won't, sadly.
You can restore the feature with this

Re:No anti-popup ads support
Yes there is, there is just no UI for it. If you want to enable support then read this or search for a popup blocker ui extension.

Re:Tonight on crossfireI tried IE5 for a couple of weeks last year, but got fed up with the little things (why the hell can't it open new windows maximized?). Sure, I've found Netscape to be buggy in the past, but it has been a lot better lately. 4.73 on Windows has locked up only about twice in the last few months. 4.73 isn't as stable on Linux, but so far 4.74 Linux hasn't caused any problems.
As for the speed issue, it is slow as installed, but I came across this page listing a bunch of settings for the preferences file (yes, it says that it's for Windows on the page, but they also seem to work when I add them to my
.netscape/preferences.js file). There's another one I use that I can't remember where I found, but it seems to speed things up. It's:user_pref("network.speed_over_ui", false);
Oh, and for those who use text-only buttons and are sick of mistaking "shop" for "stop", add this line:
user_pref("browser.chrome.disableMyShopping", true);
