Time for a boycott list?
I'm sure there are lists out there but maybe it is time to put together a list of artists who are signed on with UMG and boycott every single one of them. These guys are just frothing at the mouth and it is time for consumers to bitch slap them. This is ridiculous.

Re:The companies behind the RIAA...Many times a simple trip through the pages of one of the main corporate sites will give you enough information. For example, http://www.sonybmg.com/ has a link to a list of labels (though it's not complete, or there are many sub-labels to the labels listed), which includes Arista Records, Burgundy Records, Columbia Records, Epic Records, J Records, Jive Records, LaFace Records, Legacy Recordings, Provident Music Group, RCA Records, and Verity Records (as well as several derivations of RCA, Sony, etc). The strange part is that Sony/ATV music publishing is the division that manages (possibly the largest part of) the copyrights that Sony holds for music, so it would be assumed that this particular division would be the most important one to list, and yet it's not listed.
http://www.wmg.com/about/ Warner Music Group is home to a collection of the best-known record labels in the music industry including Asylum, Atlantic, Bad Boy, Cordless, East West, Elektra, Lava, Maverick, Nonesuch, Reprise, Rhino, Roadrunner, Rykodisc, Sire, Warner Bros. and Word. Warner Music International, a leading company in national and international repertoire operates through numerous international affiliates and licensees in more than 50 countries. Warner Music Group also includes Warner/Chappell Music, one of the world's leading music publishers. http://www.emigroup.com/About/Overview/music.htm EMI's record labels, which include Angel, Astralwerks, Blue Note, Capitol,[...] EMI,[...] Manhattan, Mute, Narada, Parlophone, and Virgin http://new.umusic.com/Labels.aspx?Group=1 (Universal) Geffen Records, Interscope Geffen A&M, Island Def Jam Music Group, Lost Highway Records, MCA, Mercury, Motown Records, UNI Records, Universal Records, Verve Music Group This page is also helpful, though it lists only the individual labels, and not where they belong in the list of major labels:

Obviously hundreds of thousands of people HAVE bought this music, and these are the ones that you need to educate. If you are one of these people, please stop supporting terrorism! -

Re:clueless
What the GP said is actually very true. I do not understand why you asked for proof, because he gave you an example immediately after his allegation:
They carry cocteau twins and breeders (for example) who are on 4ad. And who owns 4ad? Beggars Banquet - and BB is an RIAA affiliate.
It is a little trick that the big five use, and it has been going on for a good little while now. Take Island Records, as another example. It was the largest indie label in history. Who owns it now? Everyone's favorite dickheads, UMG. Check out the Island Records website, though. See any mention of it being a UMG affiliate?
That is how it works. The big five know that they are hated by the majority of the people who listen to real indie, punk, rock n' roll, et cetera. They buy up independents or spin off their own little "divisions", keep it as quiet as possible, and hope that you won't notice.
If you want to be certain that what you are planning to purchase, whether it be a download or a CD in a store, is in fact not affiliated in any way with the RIAA, I suggest bookmarking the RIAA Radar, and using it constantly. That's what I do, anyway. -
This will never pass the French Senate.I can say for sure that in it's present form that this bill will not pass the French Senate. Why? Because one of the biggest record companies in the world is based out of France. Universal Music Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vivendi Universal. Though its a multi-national, mega-corporation, it has main offices in France, and its stock trades on the French Stock Exchange.
Check out this link: http://consumers.umusic.com/dmd/retailers/index.h
t mlThat is Universal Music's web page that discusses digital downloads, and all of the online retailers that provide digital downloads of UMG's artists. Scroll down to the bottom, and UMG lists fnacmusic.com as a French vendor of their music downloads.
Another link: http://www.fnacmusic.com/toolboxmenu/telecharger.
a spxWhat do you know, fnacmusic.com uses Windows Media Player and the Windows Media DRM for the sale of their music. So tell me, why would the French government attempt to cripple the sales of the online music of one of the largest French corporations (and one of the largest French tax revenue generators)?
The fact of the matter is, the members of the French legislature today voted on something that they don't quite understand. It sounded good. Everyone is pointing it towards opening up the iPod, the ITMS, and Fairplay. Who this really aggrivates, however, is Microsoft. Microsoft, just like Apple, has no desire to open up its DRM schemes to work with Media Players that do not support them. Imagine Windows Media Player DRM for Linux? I don't think so. Politicans can easily get caught up in the hype just like we can.
As we speak, Microsoft is lobbying to have this law modified in some way that will prevent itself from having to modify its own DRM to satisfy the new law, and it will be lobbying through its powerful partner in Vivendi Universal. Universal Music Group wants DRM. In the end, the record companies would like to control the DRM, not the software companies, but their not there yet. Regardless, Universal Music group would have to take a step backwards if Apple and Microsoft had to re-engineer their DRM's or change their policies on licensing. Because the DRM is in the hands of Apple, Microsoft, Real, and Sony, the music companies loose out while this legislation gets bashed to pieces by everyone who has a stake in the music industry.
Maybe the end product of this legislation will be signifigantly modified enough that we can all say its biased against Apple and its products, but at this point, everyone is screwed, and Microsoft, Vivendi Universal, and their partners, have the most to loose, and the French Senate will hear this soon enough.

In other news.....
Rejected submissions, part IV:
Yahoo is running this article which states that Universal Music Group - the world's largest record company - will begin to cut the prices of CDs currently priced between $16.98-$19.98 to just under $13 each. According to Universal, large retailers sell CDs for less than mfg sticker price, which should allow new CDs to be had for about $10 each. Some of Universal's artists are Limb Bizkit, t.A.T.u, U2, Weezer, etc. UMG is cutting list prices on compact discs by as much as 30 percent in an effort to boost sales that have been stymied by free online music-sharing services such as Kazaa.
So, quit yer beyotching. -
Re:Self sustained?
That's wonderful, but nobody gives a shit what music you "wouldn't listen to to save your life." The OP's point, which you seem to have willfully ignored in order to provide you with an excuse to spout your irrelevant moral masturbation for all the world to hear, was that Universal is the biggest selling record label.
I believe Universal is also the label with the widest range of jazz and blues artists, if that helps.
If you're going to be such a whiner, why don't you make your own list? You can start here. Have fun.

Write a letter!I encourage everyone to send email to umg@umusic.com and protest their decision to not follow the Red Book standard.
Here's what I just wrote:
I am an avid music buyer, and spend upwards of $500-1000 on CDs per year. As soon as I purchase a CD, I immediately convert the music to MP3 format so that I can play the music on my MP3 jukebox. I do not actually play the CDs directly any longer because it is not effiicient to do so.
Because of your non-compatible "CD" format, I cannot do this and therefore can not and will not purchase copy protected CDs.
Your actions in not following the standard Red Book CD format will cause many problems for music lovers and cost you many millions of dollars in sales. Please reconsider your unwise decision.
