Re:India pre-dates China ????.
[In answer to a request for evidence to back up a claim that India was civilized before China was "even populated."]
About 5 thousand years of history? The Indus River valley?
Culturally, early Chinese society was more Indian than what we currently identify as "Chinese". Much of the pre-history/early history of China is shaped by mythological retelling and cultural identity.
The Indus River Valley civilisation, if you'll pardon my spelling, cities such as "Mojhendro daro", the proto-writing that may be embodied by the abundant seals and "identity markings" found in the artefacts ... yes, I'm moderately familiar with the civilisation ; 5000 years ago sounds about right for that civilisation. Approximately contemporaneous with the stone circles that surround sub-tropical Aberdeen here, or even Stonehenge and Durrington Walls (if you were watching the Nat.Geo. programme last night). All very well and good. This establishes that India (loosely, in a pre-Partition sense) had a significant civilisation in excess of 5000 years ago. Which is one half of your assertion.
The other half of your assertion is that China wasn't even populated at this time. Considering that pre-human anthropoid apes have been reported from fossil sites from China for around a century, with dating going back to 1.7 million years ; that hearth sites have been dated back as far as 1.36million years; that all realistic (non-alien astronaut) theories of the peopling of the Americas have that initial Western hemisphere population passing through the general area of Mongolia/ North China prior to ca.14000 BP ; that China has an extensive and increasing record of pottery discoveries (see this paper for example, "In late 1980s and 1990s, more cave sites were excavated in southern China. Within these sites, five pieces of early pottery sherds were found from layer 5 at Miaoyan, in Guilin, Guangxi Province; the pottery samples were dated to 15660±260 b.p. [...] and 15560±500 b.p. [...]. Two pottery pots unearthed at Yuchanyan [...] dated to 14810±230 b.p. [...] and 12320±120 b.p.[...]" ; that semi-historical records reported in China in the early years BC imply dates for the then-documented history going back to before 2000BC or before 4000BP.It is very difficult to have a civilisation appear without a significant population, and the presence of the strongly prehistoric pottery dated to over 10000BP coupled with the non-trivial documentary evidence for an organised, bureaucratic civilisation around 4000BP makes your assertion that "India was civilised before China was populated" unsupportable, in my opinion.
(I note that the Wikipedia article on the Indus Valley (a.k.a Harappan) civilisation puts it's dates around 2600-1700 BC, which is 4600-3700 BP and thus overlapping with the Chinese documentary indications. Which makes it post-date a number of our local artefacts.) -
is xG VMSK
I thought it sounded like Very Minimal Shift Keying (VMSK), then I saw this at VMSK.org:
"XG technologies goes on the air with their method in November from an 800 foot tower..."
More info on VMSK here and here. The first paper states "no ultra narrowband modulation method, which includes VMSK and VPSK, can have substantially greater efficiency than conventional methods, such as QAM, in transmission in the same frequency band". -
Workshop on Visualization
Katy Börner and I have been organizing a workshop on Information Visualization Infrastructures, including graph drawing packages. The results are available at http://vw.indiana.edu/ivsi2004/
There are lots of different tradeofs involved. One being interactive vs. static graphics. Another being the size of the graphs.
For static graphs, such as class hierarchies and such, Graphviz (http://www.graphviz.org/ works fine and is easy to integrate in a system. For some graphs, Graphviz will not work at all so you need to try first.
For large or dense graphs, above 1000 nodes or more than 4 times more edges than vertices (5n etc), node-link diagrams don't work at all. You could use a matrix but people are not used at reading matrices.
For interactive visualization of graphs, Jung (http://jung.sourceforge.net/) and Prefuse (http://prefuse.sourceforge.net/) are fine if you have small graphs ()
If you are a graph wizard and want to analyze large social networks, you can take a look at Pajek (http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/pub/networks/Pajek/) but it is not a free software and runs mostly on Windows.
Other packages are ok for simple things, stereotyped things or more experimental things. You need to try them on your own problem to decide. -

PIvot tables? YawnFrom what I can tell, these "pivot tables" are just a primitive form of concept analysis (data mining).
Anybody reading this article who actually thinks these pivot tables sound "powerful" should look into some of the real row-based data mining tools out there. For starters I suggest looking at Weka and Orange.
Weka in particular is extremely easy to use and you don't have to be a researcher to figure it out.

Wavelet artifacts
Wavelet and DCT based codecs are alike in that they both quantize in the frequency domain and thus tend to have blurring and ringing artifacts. However, wavelet ringing looks more evenly spread-out than DCT ringing and doesn't coincide with a regular 8x8 pixel grid. Compare JPEG and JPEG2000 artifacts.

Imagine a Beowulf cluster of LOGO processors...Haven't we taken a wrong turn in pursuing Java, J2EE et al?
Really, isn't a functional language like LOGO
(hmmm, something strange about that turtle head there) better?
And what about LOGO's big brother, Common Lisp?
C'mon guys! The Turtle is calling for you. Will you answer?

Resemblance with dutch power outage
The whole situation seems a lot like a dutch blackout on 23 june 1997. 3 generator shutdown due to failure, other get overloaded and shutdown as well. An intresting report can be found in this report. Here are some details in dutch.

All depends on your situation
I spend each summer in Slovenia doing fieldwork for my graduate degree. Luckily, I have hooked up with a faculty at Univerza v Ljubljani. So I just go to an office and use my laptop. But if you don't have it good like that, my advice is to be careful according to your locale. The American model for dial-up is different from much of the rest of the world. I was shocked to get a phone bill with several hundred minutes of dialup charges for using the phone line AS WELL AS the minutes for connection to the internet. I only know dial-up but my advice in Slovenija is: pazi!.
Also, a caveat to travelers in Slovenia. Internet cafes are kinda non-existant in Ljubljana. You can get online at the Mobitel office across from Mladinska Knjigarna and in the Mueller department store just down the street from the Posta bus stop. That's about it for regularly available spots. If anybody knows of any place that isn't closed or half-open or generally flaky, let me know. -
Pajek
Your friend can try Pajek, a package for large network analysis for Win32, developed at University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Or you may want to search the Net for other Graph Drawing Competition contestants.

Re:DeCSS = 1st amendmentStill, do you think there's many people mirroring DeCSS in Zimbabwe?
Who talked about Zimbabwe? There are other countries besides the US and Zimbabwe: Austria, the Christmas Islands, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israrel, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Nieu, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tonga, The United Kingdom, just to name a few
you can't deny that the US is a significant portion of the west.
However, lately, Europe has rediscovered its self esteem, and doesn't hesitate to occasionnally give the finger to the US (see recent Echelon investigation, and some recent crypto decisions).

Time for Slashdot to take a stand...
The following is a list of all the mirrors from the 2600 site.
Slashdot has long been one of the best true forums for free speech in the world. Link to this comment. Post that link on your website and everywhere. CmdrTaco archives these comments indefinitely, right? Lets see the MPAA take on Slashdot, Andover, and the ACLU (who I'm assuming would back you guys up) BTW: When I click the "Post Anonymously" button, is there any way to retrieve my IP address, or my login info? I sure as hell hope not. Big risk I'm taking here for the sake of free speech... but we gotta do what we gotta do. Right?

FTE!
I have been using "FTE" for several months now, and I absolutely love it!
It features color syntax highlighting for C/C++, HTML,PERL, TEX, and many more, multiple file/window editing, column blocks, configurable menus and keyboard bindings, mouse support, undo/redo, regular expression search and replace, folding, as well as background compiler execution.
[Stolen from freshmeat entry-- sue me.]
Visit fte's homepage and give it a try. -
Great!I've used icewm for a while, and like the minimalistic approach (but still want features like multiple virtual screens and light theming).
I'd also like to warmly recommend another of Mark's inventions, FTE (folding Text Editor). It's a great editor with syntax highlight, great autoindent (not just standard stuff that indents at the same level as the last line, but one that changes to next line and indents when you type {) and generally a borland-like interface. You can use shift-arrowkeys to select a block while fte runs under console and other nifty things. It was a step up from joe for me, and I never could get into Emacs/lisp.
fte runs both under X and console, and you can get it from http://www.kiss.uni-lj.si/~k4fr0235/fte/.

Re:Sawmill
You mean it doesn't come with nice defaults? My prefrence is for MS's Windows manipulation shortcuts and IceWM's for switching desktops.
-
IceWM
The IceWM seams to do a very good job of not having to use the mouse. In particular it uses almost all of the MS Windows shortcuts for window manipulation. For some reason people don't seam to like icewm. Could it be because it just to simple? Or could it be becuase it is too much like MS Windows?

Re:Miguel you're plain wrong
Boy was i suprised when I went to the linux mandrake page, and found screenshots of KWM configured with themes just as wild(ugly) as E. They just don't advertize it much.
Anyway, the E that came with redhat was stable, though it seems to ignore the fact that the gnome panel is there, and maximizes apps over it. Kinda weird they let that slip through. Fix this by getting icewm, works find right after installing the rpm
