Re:I'd be really excited about this...No, it's just that the amount of excitement I have about something really needs to be in proportion to how good the thing is. Lost has resulted in a major recalibration of by excitement levels. I'll still enjoy Dr Who of course.
I really enjoyed the little 'hook' that the BBC used in Dr Who - "Bad Wolf". It was fun looking out for its appearance in each episode and the BBC created a bunch of "fake" web sites tying into the series that added an extra dimension and helped to suck the viewer into the fictional world and suspend disbelief. What I enjoy about Lost is that it uses many of the same tricks - but on a grander scale that makes the little Dr Who games seem trivial by comparison. -
So..

Re:Doctor Who?
There is also http://www.unit.org.uk/. Password is pretty obvious if you have been watching the new series... or know JavaScript.

Re:What about the Schlechter Wolf bombs?
Hand in your geek badge. If you don't get references to the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce or Bad Wolf you shouldn't be playing on Slashdot.

Re:What about the Schlechter Wolf bombs?
Well, it wouldn't. It's a site set up by the BBC to promote the latest series of Doctor Who.
Either that, or the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce is using a terribly effective Javascript-based password system.
I would appear to have hacked into the site. Wahey!

...What are you going on about? http://www.unit.org.uk/disclaim.html
That article is bogus!!!! -
What about the Schlechter Wolf bombs?
Several unexploded WW2-era bombs are apparently being uncovered in east London. Supposedly the plan was for them to remain unexploded for a long period, then detonate, to act as Hitler's revenge long after the war was lost. Nasty.

Re:sign of weakness
Except that the episode was written and filmed last year, back when the series was shot. This is not a case of "Oh, the ratings are slipping a bit. Let's put in a Dalek episode." This is a case of the fans saying, "It's not proper _Who_ unless we have classic _Who_ villians, like the Daleks, the Autons, the Cybermen..."
The BBC is heavily banking on the new Doctor Who, and it's no wonder, considering that the first episode was the highest rated show in its timeslot, and third highest rated in the week. They've already gone and commissioned a second series, a Christmas special, a line of toys, novels, and heaven knows what else. They advertise the show non-stop, set up tie-in websites here and here, and even show a documentary series which ties in to the most recent episode of the show.
Point is, they've spent a whole heck of a lot of money on the show, and they plan on spending a lot more. If this is a vote of no-confidence, I wish more sci-fi series would get such treatment.
