Re:thats nice
Yes, indeed it does.

Re:Does LynxOS really contain Linux code?Yes, but they're not just using LynxOS. They're also using BlueCat Linux, which I'm a bit worried about. I called Lynuxworks asking them if I could have access to the source code once I got my hands on the BlueCat distro. They put me off, didn't return calls, and told me they couldn't discuss that with me at "this time." I'm not saying they won't give it to me, but they're not being forthcoming, either.
Combine this with the stunt they pulled with User Mode Linux (see this story) in which they used GPL'ed code, and submitted their changes back in an uncompilable tarball (no patch), and I'm getting pretty suspicious. After working out what changed and generating a patch, the UML team still couldn't make their changes compile. Presumably, Lynuxworks could (would good what the changes be unless they compiled?), so this again would indicate a violation of the GPL.
I'm hoping FCS switches back to looking at Red Hat - at least they have a track record. When I found out FCS was using Lynuxworks, my first reation was "Who?"

User-ode Linux
While we're all smoking the virtualization-pipe, let's check out User-mode Linux.

Re:Check-out the FreeBSD jail facility
Also, don't forget about these Linux based methods:
Linux Vserver:
http://www.linux-vserver.org/
Xen
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/netos/xen/
User Mode Linux:
http://usermodelinux.org/
Linux Vserver appears to be almost the same thing as FreeBSD jails. I have not ran either so I cannot speak with authority on them.
I have ran Xen and UML, however.
Xen and UML are completely virtualized environments that boot a whole seperate machine inside of the host. UML is good to run on a server that has some 'extra' resources to dedicate to a VM as you can spec total ram on the command line and there are no modifications to the host machine kernel. Xen's hypervisor takes over the machine by only occupying the first 64-128M of ram, with the rest of ram dedicated to VMs, which makes it hard, but not impossible, to slap Xen onto an existing machine. Xen also requires that a patched kernel is installed on the host.

Try UMLWin32 instead
No, that's the Agent Under Fire memory hack.
If you want to install Linux as a process within Windows, try User Mode Linux for Cygwin.

Re:The biggest problem...
...Its free-software counterpart is plex86....
That was before Plex86 was "simplified to be a user (application) code only Virtual Machine technology" and became much more UML-like.. -
Include User Mode Linux! Now that we have User Mode Linux that can run in User Space, would it be possible to get it to compile and run in CygWin? Then people could run Linux in their existing Windows system.
Just an evil thought I had. -
Re:That's neat
If the whole jail resided in its own actual virtual Linux machine, where nasty things cannot break the account, just the session, they would be quite a bit more effective.
You can use User Mode Linux to do that.

Re:Wait for it...
User Mode Linux is not the "new VM". Rmap is the new VM, which stands for "Virtual Memory" by the way. User Mode Linux is something very cool though, and yes, you don't have to wait until 2.6/3.0 comes out to try it. Look here or here.

User-mode Linux
A nice way to dip your toes in the 2.5 kernel pool without risking your main system is with User-mode Linux.

Re:White paper ?
Yeah, let's not argue about time... Sweep scans are very common - I get mostly ftp-scans.
What I'm intrested is using virtual servers to fake a net of computers - virtual honeynet - net of honeypots. Could be cheaper and faster to setup than with real hardware. I've heard that there are people already doing this using usermodelinux. With that one could setup a honeypot in minutes...
