Once people start thinking of making the Internet ready for VOIP 911 calls and other emergency traffic, without 'net neutrality' safeguards in place, the government will have to take on the task of architecting and enforcing standards to make sure that emergency traffic is tagged and treated right. If the telcos are uncomfortable with net neutrality legislation, I wonder how they feel about having the government telling them exactly how to do QOS/diffserv. The sheer size of such a regulatory task would easily dwarf any kind of net neutrality bill. They're actually asking to be regulated even more than under net neutrality.

Some groups are already raising the issue of whether or not the Internet should be capable of providing prioritization for emergencies

Worse still, in the end, if the telcos end up selling prioritization to content providers, those content providers, once they measure what they get, will find it poor and inconsistent anyway. QOS/diffserv pretty much needs end-to-end compliance to really make a consistent difference, especially at the ends (local ISP) where traffic loads are more variable and fanned out. Backbone setups won't matter nearly as much as last mile setups because the loads are static.

With more than one million registered users, "The Pirate Bay" touts itself as the "World's Largest BitTorrent Tracker" facilitating and enabling illegal swapping of millions of illegal copyrighted movies, music, software, and games. The operators of "The Pirate Bay" have publicly ridiculed copyright holders and taunted law enforcement for years claiming immunity to copyright laws. Since filing a criminal complaint in Sweden in November 2004, the film industry has worked vigorously with Swedish and U.S. government officials in Sweden to shut this illegal site down. ThePirateBay.com is a so called pirate "tracker" that directs people to pirated movies and music, making available over 157,000 illegal files including the latest blockbuster releases such as Da Vinci Code, Mission Impossible: III, and The Poseidon Adventure and many others. The Pirate Bay's takedown today represents a growing culture of respect for intellectual property in Sweden, which in July 2005 reformed its copyright law to address digital piracy. Various rights-holders have sent countless cease-and-desist letters to The Pirate Bay, requesting that its operators remove pirated content from the site, and have been met with mockery and scorn, such as the operators posting the letters and their replies on ThePirateBay.com.

According to Alexa.com, which rates millions of Web sites around the world, "The Pirate Bay" was the 479th most visited Web site in the world, ranking 21st in Sweden and 312th in the U.S. In comparison, CNN.com is the 125th most popular site in Sweden.

Like many pirate Web sites, "The Pirate Bay" contains significant and lucrative third-party advertising, much of it promoting the porn industry. Advertising revenue is typically a function of number of unique site visits per day. Wonderful group you share your opinion with regarding Crichton

It is sad how many people actually believe that Crichton writes with a foundation of solid scientific evidence. It is obscene the manner in which distorted facts get bootstrapped into the datastream by faux public policy organizations.

It is pitiful that the State of Oklahoma offered compelling anecdotal evidence indicating the fallaciousness of intelligent design when they elected Jimmy Inhofe to the Senate.

Inhofe is to a very large degree responsible for Crichton's elevation into the upper level of global warming debate. As chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works, he held a hearing on September 28, 2005 titled "The Role of Science in Environmental Policy-Making", and gave Crichton top-billing as the first speaker.

The last speaker of the hearing was David B. Sandalow, The Brookings Institute's Environmental Scholar, who had previously published a harsh critique of Crichton's environmental views in January, 2006. The Brookings Institute's synopsis of it reads:

"How do people learn about global warming?

That--more than the merits of any scientific argument--is the most interesting question posed by Michael Crichton's State of Fear.

The plot of Crichton's 14th novel is notable mainly for its nuttiness--an MIT professor fights a wellfunded network of eco-terrorists trying to kill thousands by creating spectacular "natural" disasters. But Crichton uses his book as a vehicle for making two substantive arguments. In light of Crichton's high profile and ability to command media attention, these arguments deserve scrutiny.

Really, I think the "Fair Tax" crowd has critically examined the current problem, which is certainly well due and admirable, but I don't think they've critically examined their solution

Actually, tens of millions has been spent researching their solution, not counting the analysis of many esteemed economists from universities across the country. (Many of whom have endorsed the fairtax.)

The tax structure we have now is designed to induce certain behavior in many sectors. It is also designed to pay for certain _types_ of consumption, like gas taxes paying for the interstate pavement based on use. You consume pavement, you pay for the pavement.

Two points: First, these taxes are not targeted by the FairTax. The FairTax would eliminate taxes related to income and business taxes. Second, the taxes you mention are often not targeted correctly, and may indeed benefit from being replaced by the fairtax in the future. For example, hybrids consume less gas, pay less in gas taxes, yet use the pavement just as much as a regular car.

I think the big point you're missing with FairTax is that it is not meant to be perfect, just simpler and better than what we have now. It meets that criteria splendidly. You're also forgetting that a lot of what makes FairTax great is its ability to tax people who are currently evading taxes in the black market, cash market, etc.

Well, it was widely speculated that the reason Bush is so adamantly against the ICC is Kissenger. That I don't have a link for, nor the will to find one for you. At this point though, it looks like the right move, with the unsightly acts documented in Abu Ghraive and Guantanamo Bay. Given his 2000 running platform, its possible he expected to be in the sights of such a court. Not that he's somehow responsible or encourages the use of torture. But when the world's strongest nation backs out of something like the antiballistic treaty, throws more money into the Defense Department than they know what do to with, you're going to attract the attention of the world's mice.

Other scientists have pointed to balloon and satellite readings of temperatures in the Earth's lower atmosphere that show no significant warming. The scientists from the universities of Rochester and Virginia employed a new, independent way of determining the temperature, using historic meteorological climate data to construct temperature values for each grid cell of the Earth at an equivalent height of two meters. This analysis agreed with the satellite and balloon measurements, establishing that the disparity is close to the surface and mainly in the tropics.

In another report, the Rochester/Virginia scientists found that the computer climate models used to assert that the introduction of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2), into the atmosphere is causing the Earth to warm, and that the effect increases with altitude becoming twice as strong at about three miles up, are in stark contrast to the actual data of the past quarter-century. Personally, I think a gas tax is a great idea, as long as it is accompanied by other programs that encourage reduction in fossil fuel usage -- i.e. as long as its effect is actually reduce consumption, and doesn't end up just making people pay more for the same amount of gas as always.

Note that I am for torte reform, but it appears that in this case it is not the lawsuits that are driving up the insurance costs but rather cycles in the malpractice insurance market itself.

CHALLENGE
Encryption systems, which scramble electronic communications and information, allow users to communicate on the internet with confidence in the knowledge that their security and privacy are protected.
