Re:I have to disagree
After 13 months the 360 has still sold less than the original xbox has in the US. But it is shortening the gap very quickly at the price point it's at. Take a look at its trend line compared to the original: http://videogamecharts.com/page3.html Im guessing that BOTH the 360 and Wii will do better than their previous iterations, but both will also probably follow their past trendlines closely. The real question is, at the PS3's price point, can it follow the PS2's trend line?

Re:This will probably fan the flames of fanboyism,
I don't have the worldwide numbers but it is interesting to note that June (because of the DSlite release) is the only month since last November that the DS outsold the PSP in the US

The US sales numbers for June are in and Xbox 360 is still selling poorly. Also check out the Launch Comparison chart. The Xbox360 has had a slightly better launch than the Gamecube.
It may also be interesting to note that June is the only month this year (only month since last november) that the DS outsold the PSP in the US. Mainly because the release of the DSlite. I wonder where people get the DS whooping PSP ass thing from. Fanboyism? -

Given the actual sales numbers before the DS lite became available, are you still /certain/ that the PSP is failing? behind? yes, but failing? I'm not so sure about that.
Amongst those of us on the internet the DS is perfect, the PSP is dying and everyone is anticipating the wii, but we don't always echo the sentiments of the mainstream public whose spending dollars far exceed ours. -

Re:Not just PSP
What are you smoking? The psp is selling very well. In the US the PSP was outselling the original DS [not the DS lite] for the greater part of the year. In fact, if the DS didn't have a lead on launch the two systems would be selling evenly with the PSP in the lead.
http://www.videogamecharts.com/page3.html
In japan, the PSP was only a million or so units behind. Now that the DS lite is available, the DS is taking a much larger lead, but the two systems are still fighting neck and neck. The DS lite is outselling the PSP by a factor of four, but the PSP is still the #2 selling video game system in Japan.
http://www.videogamecharts.com/page5.html
These are actual sales numbers, and not shipped.
Given how many PSP gamers have decided to not play any new games, its interesting that PSP software sales is #2 in japanese marketshare.
http://www.m-create.com/eng/e_ranking.html
When will people on the internet stop assuming that because the ds is doing well, that automatically means that the PSP is failing? Stop listening to the blind fans on both sides and check the facts every so often. -

Re:Now just wait a minute
as of e3, MS only had 3 million x360s in the market... total. 3 million "shipped" in the first seven months; shipped, not sold...
north america is their biggest sales region, but sales are only ~1.7 million here. [these were MS' own numbers from e3] the x360 "shortage" is over, but the consoles still arent flying off the shelves. it is still being outsold by a "weak" six year old console. x360 sales are far below sales of the original xbox. to put things in perspective; in its first couple of weeks, the ps2 sold almost as many consoles as the x360 has sold in what? seven months... http://videogamecharts.com/page2.html
needless to say, i hope the x360 does well. i plan to add to their sales numbers myself, some software that they have is actually worth the prize of the console, but to say that they are going to have 10 million units in the market [basically 210% more units in the next four months...] thats crazy talk. -
Re:Why exact/y would anyone want to do that?
sorry about the remark, but why naysay a coding contest for what is probably one of the most homebrew friendly "major" consoles [yeah, even despite sony's best efforts].
whenever psp homebrew is mentioned, someone always decides to throw in the obligatory GP2X free ad. its starting to become yet another /. cliche. the GP2X is nice, but the PSP has much more visibility for amateur coders to have their work seen. which in effect, would be the "real" payoff of a contest such as this. the creators of various emulators are known by name to the majority of psp users. as a coder, you cant pay for that type of visibility. numbers dont lie... http://videogamecharts.com/page2.html now imagine that the majority of these users will have the ability to use your program, and even if they do not have that ability, they are likely to know of your program if it is popular enough.
im not on the sony payroll; i am a multiple console owner. i'll freely admit i prefer my various playstations to my other consoles, but that doesnt mean i love them any less nor does it mean that i havent spent as much money on all of my systems [and thats what really matters]. its a matter of the games. if i read a post that has misinformation, or is a blatant swipe at a console, i add my $0.02 just like any other slashdotter. -
I don't understand
I don't understand the people who say that the Wii will 'win' the 'console war' based on the sales of the DS.
If you take a look at the DS sales and assume they will sell 4 time the amount of Wii you still fall about 17 million short (less then half) of where the PS2 was and (actually a little more) than the Xbox at the end of 2005.
The console and the handheld market are entirely seperate markets. You can't predict success in one because of the other (look at the PSP). As for the Wii inovation, they were inovative with the DS too and (according to June's issue of EGM) 80% of the games don't use either the touchpad, second screen, or either. Again, assuming the wii does twice as well, that leaves 40% of games as standard style games, with slightly better graphics than the (lackluster) gamecube games.
I'm not logging in because bad mouthing the Wii gets you modded down. I think we should wait until all the systems are out before we declare a winner to the (media created) Console War. To assume the Wii has already won is premature and ignorant.
