Re:Sony vs. The World
Please do provide some evidence before bad-mouthing a manufacturer.
Is that a joke? What evidence did you provide to support the assertion that your products did not fail? I can provide only anecdotal evidence: that the performance of my DVD player has degraded over time. And, yes, I know Samsung didn't program the firmware inside my DVD player. In fact, I did. Via an SDK I downloaded from VMLabs. My player is the N-701 (I think, I'm at work and the player's at home), and I have a couple of games and a controller for it, and a couple of small utilities I wrote myself that run on it as well.
How was that?

Re:Flash or HTMLI'd really prefer to see something like
... dynamic HTML with Javascript
Check out products incorporating the NUON processor (formerly from VM Labs, recently bought out by Genesis Microchip), such as the Toshiba SD-2300 and Samsung N-2000, N-501, and N-504. NUON-enhanced DVDs contain additional info in the form of (tada!) HTML and Bob scripts - the DVDs play normally on regular players, the enhanced features are available on products like those above.
There are some NUON-enhanced DVDs available. You can also play games on these units, although it is by no means intended as a PS2/XBox/etc competitor. You can even download the NUON SDK and hack your own NUON programs! Check out the NUON dome for more info.
Disclaimer: I used to work for VM Labs. I don't anymore (left in September 2001), and have no business or financial connection with either VM Labs or Genesis Microchip. I still think the technology is pretty cool, though. -
Graphics paralell processor? It's been done.
I think this has been done already. My understanding is that VM Labs has made a chip, and has already begun making partnerships with other companies like Motorola. Here's my source of info:
Here's an article from Wired magazine interviewing and profiling VM Labs
Here's VM Labs's url:
Is it just me or isn't the VM Labs chip pretty much the same thing?
Has anyone have current news of VM Labs progress in getting it's chip in devices?

Nuon
I hear you. Now that most of the movies I like are on DVD I've been keeping my tape purchases to the $6.99 cheapies in anticipation of going digital, too. I really want a DVD player, but I've been waiting for one with the Nuon chipset by VMLabs to come into production. If Nintendo beats them to market, well then I guess I'll go with Nintendo.
