I don't use games or interactive video, so can't comment on the latency issues there - just plain surfing the latency is not generally a problem. Personally, I can handle a .25 sec delay between a click and the time the download starts. If that's not quick enough for you, maybe it's time to cut down on the caffiene :-).

File downloads are really fast, with no FAP. However, uploads are severely limited in terms of speed - big attachments can take a long time to send.

Streaming audio works adequately for KPIG, Nascar races (including all their fancy applets), and hockey games.

I was warned strongly that the system was very weather sensitive, but have experienced no significant problems due to weather on my end, and only a couple or three outages due to severe thunderstorms at Starband's Florida ground station.

My employer's Windows-based VPN system does not work over Starband, but they warned me about that upfront. I don't know if it's a latency thing or they're just blocking the ports for some reason. No biggy, since my work travels well on a USB flash drive. SSH works - I use it to contact SourceForge and other places.

I use an old P-II system running WinProxy on Win98 to connect to the Starband modem. The P-II is connected to a Linksys wireless gateway, and my home network lives behind that.

Turns out that my house can't get DSL, but my mailbox, which is almost 2 miles away, could. Not sure how they could confuse the two...

Anyway, StarBand was installed in August. Since then max download speeds have typically been in the 130..180KByte/sec range (for servers that can keep up). I was warned by other users that the system is "awful" during bad weather, but during gale force winds and 5"/day of rain a couple of weeks ago it still managed 30KByte/sec. Since the best the noisy land-line dialup ever managed was 1KByte/sec, that's more than acceptable. The only downtime that I noticed was for a few hours in September when a major thunderstorm blocked their NOC. YMMV.

If you're a big uploader, though, watch out. Upload speeds suck relative to the download capability, being not much faster than a 56kbit/sec modem on a clean phone line. Almost all my flow is down, though, so this isn't a biggy.

Basically, when you wanted to turn off the system, you would hit the Suspend button on the control panel (or an appropriate set of hotkeys). Your RAM image would then be flushed to a special disk partition, and the system would be powered down. At the next power on time, this partition was checked to determine if it was valid (I forget what the cookies were), and if it was, the boot loader would simply copy the contents of that partition to RAM.

It worked pretty well for me - I went months at a time of several power-on/power-off cycles per day without a real reboot.

The Tajo environment on the Alto (basically, an IDE for the Mesa programming language) implemented overlapping windows. This later evolved into the MDE (Mesa Development Environment) on the 8000/6085 series, and was rechristened XDE (Xerox DE) in the late 80s.

The first release of the Star workstation software on the 8000 series machines used tiled windows. Overlapping windows were implemented in the following release.

As someone else pointed out, Atkinson may have been attempting to implement either clipping (drawing only exposed areas of a window) or cookie-cutters (windows bounded by arbitrary polygons). The Tajo/MDE API defined calls to support cookie-cutters, but these were never successfully implemented that I know of.

Dunno how old Cliff is, but around 1982 the original Xerox Star/8000 desktop forced users to tile their documents (B&W on a 1024x768 display, if I recall correctly). General user community reaction was "Bleah!". Some folks liked it a lot, many didn't. The next software release included the option of choosing betweeen tiled and overlapped windows. [OK, the idea might not have been Xerox's originally, but it's the oldest one I'm acquainted with] Personally, I like to choose between the two models, and frequently find myself using a hybrid, with some windows tiled (whether in an MDI or within the wm) and some overlapping. Additionally, as I grow older, I find that even with a 21" 1600x1200 display, I require larger fonts. There are times when the amount of information required simply will not fit on a forced tiled screen, unless I make the font smaller and put my face right up next to the display. But basically, it's the old light beer question. Some people want one, some people want the other. Some people want both. As a side note, I must say that window managers that force the active window to the top of the stack of overlapped must die! Or at least be rewritten. I like my windows to stay where I put them, thank you.
