Juniper/Netscreens do an even better job
You can set a set of bandwidth priorities in rules, which can be protocol and/or IP based, and when that rule is not in use, the bandwidth is available for other apps, but when it is, it gets its guaranteed bandwidth.
It's even got a topic in the Vonage Forum (which would have been the right place to ask this question). -
Appropriate parody:
People do stupid things.
Like infringing on patents for phone service.
so say goodbye to vonage.
The Dying phone company.

Pure FUD
Vonage works just fine with my alarm system. The only thing I had to do to make it work was have the alarm technician set the system to dial *99 first in order to put the vonage ATA into "fax mode". This is supposedly needed to make vonage lines work with TIVO also.
Obviously the author of the article (and the submitter) didn't do their homework.
A great place to start looking for how to make your alarm work with Vonage can be found here
And as for the people posting that using VOIP for an alarm is foolish because all a thief would have to do is cut the power: A thief is more likely to cut the phone line going from the PSTN to your house than he is the power. He isn't going to think, "Hmm, this person might have VOIP. I'd better cut the power, the cable, and the phone line outside the house just in case". -
vonage CEO, a bit shady?
I read through the financials and thought, "nah, this is one of those that I'd probably want to buy after 90 days when the IPO buyers sell out."
Jeff Citron is a rich guy who, by the way, has received one of the highest fines by the SEC on an individual, a $22 million fine.
Is Vonage company that makes money by being a 'money-grabby business' or a company that makes money by trying to be a successful company?...... -

Legit or not?
Vonage is indeed doing an IPO and they announced a few days ago that US customers are eligible to buy in. However, the site linked in this story looks like a phishing scam.

Re:Dupe "Article"Not only does the original thread (http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic11631.html) have more information, as you say, but the originator later makes the telling comment "Got the story off of a news channel 5 website....So they can make things out to be a little more dramatic than it actually is...."
On the one hand the house "burnt down", on the other hand the owner could wander around it rescuing his computer, etc.

Re:Dupe "Article"
If the poster had read a bit further, he would have found out This isn't a new story (same link as parent, but I had written this in notepad while wating for the story to come out of the mysterious future) AND the guy involved was a bit of an idiot who wouldn't know a five alarm fire from a small fire he could rescue a computer from. He probably caused more delay in the attempt to rescue his house by leading the police on a chase from front door, through kitchen, to basement and out a window than the delay caused by Vonage National 911 putting him on hold.
Anybody who only has Vonage without some form of backup line (either a bare bones land line or a cell phone) is a bit of a moron anyway- what would he have done if a candle lit the drapes on fire during a power outage? -
Dupe "Article"
This "article" is a duplicate thread on the Vonage Forum. The original thread has much more information.

Re:I have been....
"Several people on http://www.vonage-forum.com/ have also had success with this." This is true, many have solved it.
-
Re:I have been....
Call Vonage tech support and ask them to increase the output voltage of your VoIP router. The ring voltage is supposed to be about 90v, but the routers put out less than this (I've heard 70v-80v) by default. This can cause problems with caller ID and ringing, especially if you have several phones hooked up to your router. My parents were having the caller ID problem, and upping the voltage seems to have helped. Several people on http://www.vonage-forum.com/ have also had success with this. Unfortunately, it's not an option that us users can modify ourselves (in some cases, that's probably a very good thing.

Vonage Unhappy
According to a user on Vonage Forum, Vonage has requested that Zyxel not provide assistance to owners seeking to use this phone with Vonage's SoftPhone service.
See Vonage restricting use of ZyXEL P2000
This is probably because of Vonage's investment in the competing product from UTStarcom.

Give me what I want
I don't care about cameras, music, ringtones, etc. What I really want is a Cellular/VoIP phone that intelligently switches between the two depending on my location, day/time, etc, that always uses the same number.
The cellular phone aspect exists already (it's probably in your pocket right now), and Vonage is coming out with their own VoIP WiFi phone in a month or two. If they can combine 8 other functions, then they can combine cellular (CDMA, GSM, whatever) with Wifi VoIP. I could use this phone in the US and get amazing coverage, and then travel anywhere in the world and pay no roaming charges, just as easily as I could use the wifi aspect during peak times at home to save on cellular minutes.
I know they don't do this because their goal is to extract money, not proide us a service we want. Someday some company will, and we will hear a giant sucking noise as customers flee their current providers to get this. If Verizon teamed up with Vonage and did this tomorrow, they would gain incredible market share. Or Cingular with Skype. Or anything. -
Vonage
That had been a hot topic on http://www.vonage-forum.com/ for a while now

Re:Is Vonage the right person to sue?
I believe the logic behind suing Vonage is this--if you are going to be taking on a utility service to consumers but you (i.e., Vonage) still don't want to be regulated by collecting any taxes on 911 nor a telecommunications entity then you will bear the brunt of appearing to be a utility service, providing a utility service but not regulated nor subject to the laws applying to utility services. Therefore, you will be subject to taking responsibility for all actions coming from the use of your service. There is no doubt in the coming age Vonage and other VOIP providers will come under some modified regulations but until then states are going to have no mercy on them when they are being beaten by VOIP providers at each turn.

Re:I Wonder...
<<I will exchange a London number for a New York number... any takers...>>
I've heard rumors that Vontage is none too hip to this idea. While the advertise the fact that you can make a call from *anywhere* with an internet connection I've been told they crack down if you use the service too much i.e. if you were to buy a box with a New York number and use it only in London.
I've got to say that this is not true at all. I use Vonage from France with a U.S. phone number (about 3 hours of phone calls every weekend). When Vonage found out about this, not only weren't they bothered, but they asked to me to do an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Also, they now happily offer up the virtual phone numbers in all of their countries to any customer for around $5/month. If I want, I can add a UK, US, Canada, or Mexico phone number.

not true
Vonage offers 911 service. Check here.
After you stop paying your regular phone bill, I do not believe your line is alive for 911 service, anyway.
