Then I guess...
it's a good thing, older Nvidia drivers are so easily found.

Re:Old card support? When I was running a Voodoo3, I couldn't run crap once I upgraded to DX 8.1 (though IIRC, RX 8.0 was fine). Due to the wonderful way DX works, I had to reinstall Win98 (yeah yeah I know) to ditch it. I then found Voodoo Files where, somehow, people were still writing/hacking/whatever new Voodoo drivers. I downloaded some recent ones and viola - DX 8.1 worked - minus things even the HAL couldn't even do at that point. My best guess was that something in DX 8.1 did something the last official 3dfx drivers really didn't like, so DX wouldn't get along with them at all - but newer, obviously unofficial ones did.
So if you want to upgrade to DX 9 I'd say hit up Voodoo Files first. By that token though, I don't think DX 9 will go any faster for you and you in all likelihood won't be able to run any of the "new" features, but it's better than nothing. Might help put off that upgrade for a little while.
I'd love to know how people are making these new drivers, though.

Re:Whatever it is..Its good
When Microsoft released Windows XP NVidia would not let them rebuild the 3dfx 3D drivers for it (they were in the beta builds, but not the final). So if you have a 3dfx card and upgraded to Windows XP you had to buy a new card to get 3D support. Guess what you were going to buy, uhmmm, probably NVidia cause they had the best card.
While the 3dfx web site is no longer available, the official 3dfx drivers (including Windows XP) are available from other sources. Just look for them, you'll find them. It took me all of 5 seconds with Google.
Fortunately we still have Linux drivers because they were GPLed.
The wonderful thing about the GPLed 3dfx Linux drivers is that you could use them (if you had a mind) to write your own drivers for other operating systems. Like so. Again, nVidia bought the IP from 3dfx because that's all that they were interested in. If they were interested in supporting 3dfx hardware they would have just bought the company lock stock and barrel. -

Re: July 3?
I have a Voodoo 3 and WC3 runs pretty well on my system. However, I am also running the AmigaMerlin drivers instead of the standard 3dfx ones, and I have it clocked up to 180Mhz. You might want to try some of the options under your 3dfx tools or get one of those 3dfx hacking/overclocking programs (you can get them from VoodooFiles as well).
If it is just a performance thing, it might just be RAM (WC3 seems to need a lot of it). I found that performance improved greatly under XP when I shut off a bunch of extra services.

One step ahead of the DCMA...
It's sad, but you're probably right. Just in case anyone wants to archive this stuff, I thought I'd dig out links to all the software they reviewed in the article...

Transperizer
There has been a program out since one of the betas of Win2K called Transperizer--it no longer seems to have an official homepage (as in development has apparently stopped), but there's a review here. It allows you to set certain windows as transparent based on their window titles.
In other words, this seems kind of like old news--though I'll probably try it out, since I haven't tested WinXP's transparent window code.

Re:i just got a GeForce 3 64mb DDR Asus v8200 WHY?
all you need to do is overclock the memory and processor core a little bit. Should be fairly easy to do, and with very little risk. Check out VoodooFiles for some custom detonator drivers, or for overclocking utilities.
