Ted Kennedy was a lot of things
"socialist" wasn't one of them. He was yet another "Corporate" Democrat that came out of the Clinton era. He voted right wing on anything economic and, well, didn't vote on much else.

Re: Minefield
Yes, Hillary and Obama voted for the "Secure Fence Act of 2006". See this list of who voted for it. Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Hillary Clinton all voted for it.
Also, Mrs. Clinton gave a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations on October 31, 2016. A transcript of the speech, and Q&A after the speech, are here. (You can do a search on that web page for the word "Mexico".)
A video of part of the speech is here. From 2:17 to 2:29: "What we need to simultaneously - you know, secure our borders with technology, personnel, physical barriers if necessary in some places - and we need to have tougher employer sanctions

Re:Chinese name
Her Chinese name is Jiangxiu Fu (FU Jiangxu; surname fu2, first name jiang1xiu4 (meaning "graceful river") (thanks, Slashdot, for not supporting UTF-8!)). She must have taken the common name Sue when she moved to the United States 18-20 years ago. I found her name on Chinese websites (she speaks quick but very clear Mandarin), but it's mentioned here too. As for her American surname:
I've tried to find out who her husband is, solely to determine the origin of his surname, but haven't had any luck. There is no Chinese surname of Guge ("goo guh") (that'd be weird anyway; gu3ge2 means bones/skeleton). In Hangul (Korean) the family name would have to be goo-geu (again, no UTF-8...), in the case she married a Korean, but I've never heard of such a family name. We can safely rule out Japanese too. So that leaves American-European. Digging around on houseofnames.com for Googe turns up an etymology of French or British 14th-century origin; alt. spellings include Gouche, Googh, Gooch, and Gooche.
Tennessee and Georgia both have histories of having citizens and politicians with the surname of Googe (see 1940s). So yeah, must have got it from marrying an American, probably of European descent. Point being: it's not a Chinese surname.
Opinion footnote: given that she has absolutely no political history (see above biography link), for a first-time approach at gaining recognition, this is not going to end well for her socially. Legally... well, that's for lawyers to debate.

Re:Kasich dropping out meant nothing...
You must be relying on main stream media for information on candidates, which would explain the ignorance on Cruz and vilification of Trump. Trump may deserve some of the negative press, but he is/was not the only bad guy on the field by any stretch of the imagination.
From a personality standpoint: If you can stand listening to Cruz for more than a few minutes I question your sanity. His
.. over .. dramatic .. pregnant .. pause .. speaking style should make you question the message and the motives. While this may seem to be nit picking, Cruz refuses to answer questions and attacks everyone all the time while painting himself as a victim. Most people I know describe him as slimy, or in the words of John Boehner "Lucifer in the flesh".From a legal perspective: Cruz was a Canadian/US Dual citizen up until he decided to run for office. He is not a natural born citizen as defined by common law and common definition, he is not considered "natural born". It would take a Supreme Court decision to approve him (no, he was not born on a Military base and does not share the same benefits as John McCain for citizenship claims).
Cruz's wife is a high level executive at Goldman Sachs. Yes, that Goldman Sachs. She went on "leave" when he decided to run for President.
Cruz has a voting record which you can review and compare to his campaign rhetoric. Please do.Cruz taking Ohio would not have changed momentum, because Trump "winning" has a clear set of logic. People are fed up with career politicians who take money from huge corporations and banks and do their bidding. Sanders is benefiting from the same prevalent mentality among voters. Cruz may not be as blatantly bought as a certain Democratic front runner, but he's at least what would be considered to be a normal player.

Re:freedom
Just for the record, 66 people (59 Democrat, 3 Republican, 4 Other) voted no in the House and only Feingold voted no in the Senate.

Re:Al Franken
Depends on the topic. For the most part Al is just one of the few good ones, but on occasion I scratch my head. He voted on some extension to the Patriot act, but then later voted against them.

What the bill really is doing
The NTIS was established before the internet made information easy to find and download. Back in the day it made sense to provide that service; NTIS was self-funded by the modest fees it charged. But times have changed; today it's a dinosaur agency that provides no value, loses money and should be sunset. Here's a better summary of what's going on.

Re:Bad law...
She has NEVER worked for Apple. Get your shit straight you fucking shill. Source. See when she got her JD? See where she worked after she got it? Hint: it wasn't Apple.
I still think it's absurd to be showing a video with a still frame of Apple's logo with text calling it innovative to a jury in a case involving Apple and patents, but the shill tactics (this instance: flat out lying/character assassination) only reduce the signal/noise ratio.

Re:Ten Commandments are "overtly Christian"?
The monument is overtly Christian - note the book illustrated top-left: http://peoplesworld.org/ten-commandments-monument-spurs-controversy-in-oklahoma/
Also note the voting record and recorded religion of the guy whose family funded it and who introduced the bill permitting it in the first place: http://votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/106671/mike-ritze#.UqZHmZGELK4
So the intent seems to be overtly Christian, even if the Ten Commandments are shared by many religions.

Bullshit. Peoples willful ignorance is what keeps an honest person off the ballot. They follow the bling wherever it goes. Turn off the TV and go to opensecrets, or votesmart, or better yet, congress itself. Yay! They're still up!

Ron Paul votes like a Republican
except when it doesn't matter...he didn't cast a vote on the last FISA. He votes against the Patriot Act to keep you trolls feed and happy but it doesn't do anything. When it matters he's a Good Republican.
Here's his most recent opposition to abortion: http://votesmart.org/bill/12747/33604/296/prohibiting-use-of-federal-funds-for-planned-parenthood#.UU4egVvErss
Oh, here's him continuing to support DOMA: http://votesmart.org/bill/15600/41178/296/prohibits-use-of-funds-in-contravention-of-the-defense-of-marriage-act#.UU4eklvErss
So that totally disproves your point here:
if a vote came up that tried to ban gay marriage, obviously (well, except to you) a libertarian would oppose it,
Ron Paul is a Republican who does bullshit publicity stunts

Re:Spring is in the Air
But the NRA certainly spends a few million a year to lobby in Washington
So does Planned Parenthood. Amazing what people trying to take your rights away does to open up the checkbooks.
That you state the issue in those terms shows how effective the NRA has been.
They got inside his brains!
You may interested to know that Harp got an "F" on some NRA scorecard, and yet here she is, on the same "video games kill" bandwagon. They must be in her brains too!
You're a moron. Wayne LaPierre is a moron. Toni Harp is a moron. You're all blithering moral panicky morons.

Yes, End the Insane Spending
“This scheme to mint trillion dollar platinum coins is absurd and dangerous, and would be laughable if the proponents weren’t so serious about it as a solution,” Walden said in a statement. “My bill will take the coin scheme off the table by disallowing the Treasury to mint platinum coins as a way to pay down the debt.”
I couldn't agree more, we need to reign in this insane spending. But, you know, I would like to know why Congressman Walden voted against limiting funding for the war in Afghanistan? Probably because he's actually for spending taxpayer money, increasing the debt and then trying to stick the president with the bill at the end of the night so he looks like a dumbass. Well, too bad, you're all equal dumbasses when it comes to fiscal policy. All of this is just childish. The Republicans made deals with the Democrats to spend spend spend on both sides and now they want to act like they've been trying to stop spending all along. And it's getting ridiculous. And Republicans have a brilliant plan to solve all the problems by blocking any legislation and flirting with a second recession? Burn in hell, you're just as responsible if not more responsible for the insane spending (you're still writing blank checks for one of dubya's religious crusades).

bill sponsor claims he's for "small gov't"
http://www.votesmart.org/candidate/48696/bo-watson
"A smaller government is more effective at addressing the needs of individuals. Bo believes that the government that is closest to home is the best, and that is why he chose to run for office in State Government."
http://ltgov.tn.gov/2011/04/lt-gov-ramsey-to-appoint-sen-watson-as-next-speaker-pro-tempore/Lt. Gov Ramsey said Watson's "tireless work on issues of government reform has been an inspiration to all of us striving to make state government as small, efficient and transparent as possible."
How exactly does micromanaging school curricula --down to the very topic-- by the state legislature count as small government, again? It seems like those who trumpet "small government" are the quickest to use government as a big, nosy cudgel to impose their beliefs upon citizens, and to compel or prohibit citizens' actions. -
Re:Stop selling debt to China
The only person willing to balance the budget is Ron Paul. But he's unelectable. And a kook. I'm not sure WHY he's either of those things
Let me help you out with that. Here's a start:
- He votes to raise taxes on poor and middle-class elderly Americans by making Social Security income taxable
- He voted to repeal emissions regulations on cement plants
- He voted to maintain a Republican-enacted prohibition on using Federal funds to designate species or habitat as endangered
- He voted to restrict the EPA's ability to impose water quality standards
- He voted to prohibit Federal monies from being used for abortions
- He voted to pass a bill that prohibits the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gas emissions
- He voted for a bill to prohibits federal funds from being made available to Planned Parenthood
- He voted to pass a bill that terminates taxpayer financing of Presidential election campaigns
- He voted to extend Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy
- He voted against legislation improving mine safety regulations
- He voted against legislation to require Federal agencies to implement policies allowing telecommuting where it would not interfere with the agency's performance or operations
- He voted against establishing funding to address infant mortality
- He voted against *loaning* states money to fund energy efficiency programs
- He voted against legislation to grant whistleblower protections to offshore oil workers
- He voted against a bill funding the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standard and Technology, and other science and technology programs
- He voted against a resolution that expresses disapproval of the conduct of Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) during President Barack Obama's address to a joint session of Congress on September 9, 2009.
Do you need more crazy, or is that enough for you?

Re:This doesn't make logical sense.
I'd love to see the campaign donor list for this dude.
Oddly enough, I don't see Comcast or Verizon on there.

Re:turn it off
Given that he voted "yea" on H.R. 5304, the delightful FISA retroactive-immunity-for-any-illegal-spying-the-telcos-certainly-didn't-engage-in-but-if-they-did-it-is-now-legal act, I have a few proctological suggestions about where he can shove is alleged concern for internet privacy...
Let's be clear here, this 'silk' is, indeed, an almost cartoonishly invasive technology, enabled b default, on what is likely to be a very popular consumer device(yes, Opera mini/opera turbo, and various dialup "accelerator" proxy services have been doing similar things, so it isn't really new; but 'Silk' is the boldest and highest profile); but Mr. Barton can be judged only to be crying crocodile tears, given his record.
Pro surveillance, anti state records transparency, pro "PATRIOT" act, etc, etc. -

Okay, but what do you do if you're less than 70% similar to any of them?
-
Re:Does it really matter?Does it matter indeed.
Should we instead be worried that voters are still choosing candidates based on height, order on the ballot, the last commercial they saw on the boob tube, or other sadly irrelevant issues.

Yea, and apparently he didn't feel it was that important since he still voted the bill through with the immunity intact. http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=9490&type=category&category=13

North Carolinians, write or call NC Congress.
Most of us are outraged about this, but few of us can do anything about it. If you live in North Carolina, I urge you to contact your state congresspeople and let them know just how you, as a voter, feel about this.
The bills in question are NC Senate bill 1004 and NC House bill 1242. You can find contact information for your state congresspeople here:
http://www.votesmart.org/index.htm
And remember, even if you're a NC resident who doesn't live in Wilson, this is a *state-level* issue, and your opinion counts. Not only that, but if these bills pass, it means no cheap internet for you, either. Be heard now, while it matters. -
Re:Treason
So if she was on the committee (your link only says that she's on the committee now because she's Speaker) she would have known what was going on
Her letter to NSA dated October 2001
I doubt she would have had the ability to do anything that the Republican majority disagreed with.
That's the point... Why would she want to?
Yea on PatriotAct
Yea on FISA 2008Pelosi loves Bush's new toys.

Apps for America Contest
I was recently looking for an API with this kind of data and found that votesmart.org has a pretty good one that offers information on federal, state, and local government representives, legislation, votes, and more. http://votesmart.org/services_api.php
Also, the Sunlight Foundation has an API with congressional data, and they are currently holding a contest for creation of any kind of application that would help improve accountability, transparency, and interaction in government. The app has to be released under the MIT, New BSD, or GPL family of licenses. First place prize is $15,000. Submissions are due by March 31st. You can read more here: http://www.sunlightlabs.com/appsforamerica/
I am not associated with VoteSmart or the Sunlight Foundation.

Re:I'll Tell You What It MeansMy issue is that it's very easy to SAY you are for something, when you have no track record of VOTING for it. I actually liked Obama's rhetoric... reading things like "Obama stands for this, while McCain voted against this". Then I started asking myself why those in the Obama camp never said "Obama VOTED FOR this".
The reason is simple. His voting record does not support his rhetoric. Not being critical - it was a beautiful strategy. Have no voting record, and no one can pick you apart. (and yes, I examined Obama's voting record).
The problem is... when the rubber meets the road, you have to vote YEA or NAY (or DNV as Obama did many many times). And every bill that comes up has something that can look bad for you. You voted against the PATRIOT ACT? What are you, unpatriotic? You voted against money for education? What do you have against Kindergarteners?
But Obama's only been a Senator since 2002. And he's been literally positioning himself for running for President since 2003. Seriously, look at his voting record.
It was clearly a brilliant strategy. I didn't fall for it myself, but many did.

Re:I'll Tell You What It Means
I'm not "insane" or "clueless" and I read both sides of the issues.
Obama is a leftist, bordering on marxist (in fact, if you had read his autobiography, you'd know he sought out marxist friends quite frequently).
But since you can't be bothered to pay attention to facts, here's a few more places on his record:
Also, you attack National Journal without ever bothering to pay attention to facts (in fact, I doubt you've ever read it). IF you'd bothered to even look it up, you'd find it's nothing like you portray it as.

Re:Vote
Actually, there are four "Ross Perot" (read: 3rd party) candidates in this election:
Bob Barr / Wayne Root: Libertarian Party
Charles Baldwin / Darrell Castle: / Alaskan Independance Party, Reform Party
Cynthia McKinney / Rosa Clemente: Independent, Green Party
Ralph Nader / Matt Gonzalez: No Party Affiliation
You can check the facts yourself at VoteSmart.org -
Re:Barr
"To stay on topic, if you think you're going to get real net neutrality with Joe Biden as VP you're absolutely nuts!"
What do you base that on?
I saw a lot of votes I liked:
http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=53279I don't see anything about net neutrality.
There are some things I disagree with, but overall I think he would be a better VP then Palin. To the off topic topic:
I blame the lies spread about Gore, and I blame Nader.
Most of Nader's voters where Democrats.
Mostly I blame the people storming voting booths, closing road to voting areas, and shutting done voting stating in 'democrats' precincts early. However the biggest blame goes to the candidates for not demanding a re-vote. Seriously, there was so much trouble, so many lost votes, and it was so close they should ahve voted again.
Sure it would be expensive, but well worth it. -
conundrum
both sides can make a credible case that they're the ones defending freedom of innovation and open communication
Typical...article going too far to look "balanced"...unfortunately, our standards for journalistic objectivity now require MSM to throw out all analysis and simply ask dimwitted questions and repeat the candidates talking points.
In this case, the article is really bending over backwards to make the false point that:
both sides can make a credible case that they're the ones defending freedom of innovation and open communication
by saying that:
there is no standard accepted definition of "network neutrality,"
That statement is simply false. Of course anyone could quibble over the definition of any word ad infinitum, but the general idea is no tiered service.
This is where everyone who is in favor of John McCain flames me with how my links and definition of 'net neutrality' isn't exactly right..blah blah blah...I used to work in IT, and everyone...I mean everyone I worked with in our rather large company had the exact same basic understanding of 'net neutrality'...the wiki definition is as good as any and represents the general idea as it is understood in common usage
It's blatantly obvious that when it comes to net neutrality issues, Obama is the one who favors an internet unfettered by tiered service "packages" that do nothing more than deliver less for the same or more $$$. Why do we have to pretend that "net neutrality" is some nebulous, undefined thing that the candidates haven't talked about in enough detail...if you want more specifics, just look at the list of laws that have tried to promote net neutrality and failed, then look who voted for or against them
Obama is best for net neutrality by a mile...
