Heroes
These people are heroes:
1) A British Transport Police officer didn't have a gun. Instead of running away, he fought the terrorists with his baton.
2) As people were escaping out of the back of a restaurant, a woman stayed at the front of the restaurant. She stayed there to block the front door closed with her body, as the terrorists were trying to force their way in. Her blocking the door saved about 20 people, by giving them time to escape. After the terrorists overpowered here and forced their way in, she was able to escape.
I sometimes wonder how unselfishly brave I would be, if I were in a situation like that. I hope I'd unselfishly brave, like those two people.

Re:Cause and effect may be backwards
I agree with what you're saying, but fell that I should point out that hospitals often do make people "sicker".
Here's a current instance of a Welsh hospital: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/hospital-visitors-urged-stay-away-6498464/ . They're warning people to stay away to stop the spread of norovirus. -
Re:Speed and cost
That only works if the human has some level of decision-making power. These days, many humans you interact with in a business context are essentially front-ends to the software. The computer says you are assigned to room #231, that's where you go: Because the computer also made sure that the cleaners were scheduled beforehand.
What happens if the employee does decide to upgrade you? They get fired, even if it's over something as simple as putting a few extra chocolate sprinkles on your food: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2012/09/26/mcdonald-s-fired-me-after-sprinkling-too-much-chocolate-on-a-mcflurry-91466-31904726/

Re:The "big oil" fallacy
Please name the solar cell manufacturer that uses solar cells to power their factories. They have everything going for them, and people that buy their product get all those benefits plus more subsidies.....

Re:Good Lord...
Actually, without any modern technology, we would be the hunted.
Define "modern"? Firearms have been around for at least half a millennium. The bow and arrow goes back thousands of years before that. The spear is even older. Any one of those is a pretty good equalizer against any other animal that walks this planet. Humans as a species haven't been pray for a long time. There's always the unlucky individual -- it still happens today -- but I think it's a pretty big leap to say we'd all be pray without modern technology.
