Re:Finally a unique, original idea from Microsoft
The fact that Microsoft already has a "Me Too" product in a market that doesn't have much traction, proves that market is doomed.
FYI, I shed my wrist clock years ago, and couldn't be happier. If I went back to wearing a watch, I'd go old school Waltham pocket watch. Now there is Class.

You can keep your Apple Watch,
I bought my Casio in 2005, it's solar rechargeable. I've worn it daily with the original batter every since I bought it, never a problem and the time is always right. I'm too utilitarian to want something that needs constant attention. Maybe it comes from being a tech, I get tired of fixing problems and see no reason to generate them.

Have one, a great one.
I have a Seiko watch that runs on solar power. It features day of the week, date, a stopwatch, an alarm, and a second time zone. Oh, and yes, I almost forgot: it looks good, too. So - thanks, but no, thanks.

Re:Steam-punk appeal
Also, look up the Officer's Watch that Bernhardt made. I have the face on the right: http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f30/239943d1260933746-bernhardts-officer-watch-unitas-officerall.jpg Sapphire crystal so it's scratch-resistant.

Re:Who wears a watch?
There needs to be a slashdot poll to see how many people still wear watches. It has to be a dwindling number.
Going by the increasing number of fans at places like TimeZone, Watchuseek, and Styleforum, I would say that it's not.
Besides, a lot of folks do not wear watches for time, but more as a piece of jewelry. Besides, a good watch goes with a good outfit -- there is no denying the aesthetic value of a watch.
I also travel and move around between time zones a lot (i.e. multiple times a week). So, for one, my cellphone doesn't work everywhere I go. For another, even if it does work, my cellphone tells me the local time while my watch tells me the time at home.

Re:Geeks should appreciate mechanical l33t
It's possible for a particular quartz watch to have much higher accuracy than the +/- 15 sec/month average. It's mostly the luck of the draw without some method of internal temperature compensation. For a great deal of information on high-accuracy quartz watches, check out the High-end Quartz watch forum at http://forums.watchuseek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9.
