Cutnpaste URLs in UNIX or GNU/Linux
The WCPE listen online page produced a problem for me:
- Trying the mp3 stream I get The file wcpe.pls is of type audio/x-scpls and Mozilla does not know how to handle it. A little not at the bottom tells me to cut and paste an URL into my browser. Why do I have to do this?
- The ogg vorbis one works nicely though
I've had similar problems when trying to listen/watch streaming video/audio in the past and have usually downloaded the stream and then watched/listened happily.

Re:mp3 streams
Actually, asking for an OGG Vorbis stream isn't too far out there.... my favorite classical music station, WCPE, has a wonderful OGG Vorbis stream. If NPR had an OGG Vorbis stream I'd listen to it all the time, I'd be so happy....
What say we bring up a petition for an OGG Vorbis stream from NPR? I'll gladly sign! I'll get all my friends to sign! -
Re:Burst...
There is lots of decent music here. And they stream OGG!

Re:What's your plan, big guy?In the last year, I have bought a single CD. Okay, a 2CD set, but the principle's the same. Most of the time I listen to WCPE Internet radio. They provide a very good service (including an Ogg Vorbis stream), and play good music, with very few interruptions. Radio, as a way of distributing music, has been around for a very long time, and the music industry doesn't seem to have a problem with it. I consider WCPE to provide a good service, and happily contribute to their costs (they're listener supported).
The kind of service I would like, and which I would happily pay $10/month or so for goes one step furthur. I would like direct access to their catalogue, so I could stream or download any tracks I wanted when I wanted them. They could then log which tracks I download, and pay the artists concerned proportionally. I would be perfectly happy for the music to expire if I stopped paying for it. I would not be happy with some kind of analogue watermark that affects the quality of the sound.
I would also rather that they used Ogg, instead of AAC (Apple's apparent choice) since then all the money would go to distribution and the artists, not to patent royalties.

Re:The pigs are flying.Helms' staff was influenced by the 7/24 classical non-profit WCPE here in NC. Deborah Proctor, the station manager, helped other small NC webcasters be in touch with Helms' staff as well.
Helms likes classical as well as religious... -
long time stations to diei can only begin to say what all the problems are with the CARP rulings, but one thing is for sure. the combination of complex record keeping, privacy invasive database building at SoundExchange, constrains on content and playlists, and costs will likely place WXYC the first station on the net, WCPE the only 7/24 non-commercial classical music station, and WXDU off the net.
The process was completely undemocratic -- none of these stations was allowed to testify at CARP. WCPE was specifically excluded

back in the day and squeezing out the little guys
When we started the first continous simulcast on the net back in 1994 with WXYC we immediately ran into lawyers saying that we couldn't do it and that even if we could we wouldn't be at it for long. Now 8 years later, we're still on the air and are simulcasting two other stations and soon to add two more. All are public radio, student radio or non-profit cooperatives.
But the new rules would make it impossible for any of these stations to be on the net. WCPE is all classical and perhaps the only 24 hours non-commercial station in the world. The lose would be astounding. What are we left to hear? Tightly controlled formats with intrusive privacy invasive reporting.
