Does he A) find some clever way to solder a VGA-out from his iMac to his monitor, B) toss them both out, or C) take them both apart and merge them into one unit? "

Gekko and Webslacker were the first of many to tell us about the stir over at ZDNet, which is reporting on the arrival of sub $200 PCs due Q1 2000. These new desktops from Taiwan's Tatung come in eye-catching candy colors a la Apple's iMac. Tatung has opted for Rise and Cyrix K6 chips instead of Intel Pentiums, and a CD-ROM drive is an option. One wonders with the increase in the cost of DRAM how this will impact the price?

webslacker writes "Those snoops over at Apple Insider have gotten their hands on some blueprints of the new iMac. Not a drastic change, but it now uses a short-neck CRT and the new trayless DVD drive is very very cool. Check it out."

The Athlon Select series, as it will be called, will be aimed at the low end and will use a new ZIF standard called Socket 423 (the number of pins). Oh, and get this... plans are being laid to integrate an 8MB L2 cache. "

webslacker writes "A company called Total Impact is announcing multiprocessor PowerPC systems using IBM's PowerPC Open Platform (POP) with Linux as its OS of choice. In fact, their short press release states that their base model config will be a 5 processor box, and that they've even gotten a 128 processor system running under the MacOS. " five cpus?! Sweeeet.

webslacker wrote in to tell us that Steve Wozniak has posted his commnts on the TNT Movie, Pirates of the Silicon Valley. He notes several things and clarifies other things. As many of you noted, the movie made him out to be one of the coolest guys ever to live. I'd say thats very deserved. And I'm not saying that just because we had an Apple ][ (on a cart wheeled from class to class!) in my elementary school.

I can give it a visit before I get in line for you-know-what. " Hmm. I thought they were going to wait until Expotime, but I guess not. OctobrX, Linux.com webmaster and former themes.org head, will be in the Slashdot booth during the Expo. CmdrTaco is also one of the linux.com board members. I can't wait to see the site. Things have been a bit crazy: server troubles, spent some quality time in the ER after the gf got in accident (she's fine), and unusually stressful 'biz stuff (note:in utopia everyone pays their bills ontime instead of leaving us with a nearly empty checking account, a massive looming bandwidth bill, and all these unpaid invoices? I seem to be balding at an accelerated rate :) As for the images on port 81 of flotsam, I'm sorry about that- those of you behind firewalls will be glad to know that the new server will be in soon and hopefully the dust can settle. Allright, some quickies already: Toddius Maximus wrote in to tell us that Performance Computing has started a bi-monthly Linux Section Anthony Fuentes sent us an Interview with John Carmack webslacker sent us a nice little article on Pixar if you're curious what Steve Jobs' other company is up to. webslacker writes "According to Macintouch, several Apple sources are denying that Quicktime will actually be opensourced. It could just end up being a simple confusion of Quicktime viewers and Quicktime server, seeing as how news.com made it sound as if all of Quicktime is going to be opensource. " Here is Yesterday's Story on the subject. Update: 04/19 06:17 by H :Apple has said, however, that the newly unveiled QuickTime Streaming Server will be included under the Apple Public Source License.

webslacker was the first to write in a ZD-Net article that claims that Microsoft might be porting Office to Linux. This is not as outlandish as it might at first appear since a Java port of Office was underway at one point. On the one-hand the availability of Office might increase the use of Linux in businesses -- like its availability on Macs did for Macs. On the other hand, it might reduce long-term quality if smaller vendors are squeezed out of the market. What do you think?
