The Dextr keyboard comes wrapped in plastc [sic]
Lots and lots of plastic wrap. Plus all of the coders are named Harry.

Re:Odd question.
I was asking myself the same thing recently. Here's what I found:

Start With Open-Source Firmware for WD TV?
I'm sure there's many other devices and firmware to choose from, but I have a few of these WD TV boxes and have considered coding some of my own stuff for them starting with one of the custom firmware projects that are already available.

Re:I'm about to leave the software (corp) field
Yeah, I'd have to say I'm with you on this one. I once failed an interview because the interviewer wanted me to say that java Strings are immutable, and it's been maybe 10 years since I consciously thought about it. Hell, the times it really made sense to use a StringBuffer or a StringBuilder instead of using simple String concatenation have been few and far between.
The types of performance issues I see are attributable to architecture and design, such as 1) code so complex it retrieves the same large dataset 39 times during initialization of the app; 2) Deep data fetches to populate 25 backing views for a list of items being displayed, because someone decided it was more 'performant' to populate large data structures and UI objects for when that when the user selected something from the list, the associated detail view would pop up immediately. Never mind how long it took the list to display. 3) designing a data model to optimize the production of XML transport data, rather than modeling entities of the business domain and treating serialization of that data as a byproduct, rather than the product itself.
Stupid, stupid things kids worry about. And if you don't think I know anything about writing Java code, you can download and run this.

Re:Does that mean
I waited a few days for the article to disappear
.. hope you find see this. Here is a copy

Here is mine

Here's one that was lifted previously and since been edited
..http://www.shema-yisrael.org/torah_cycle.html
Search (Google: torah cycle) now puts me back on page 1, but not in the top spot it used to have. Again, I don't really care, just using it as an example.

Here. A much shorter and more useful table.

Re:Where does the value come from?
Your requirements are rather onerous. Why don't you list ALL places where you can exchange USDGBP and what the current exchange rate is. It's just nonsense.
I've made a list, I probably haven't got all of them:
https://www.bitcoinexchange.com/
http://www.buybitcoins.com/
http://www.sellbitcoins.com/
http://www.bitcoin4cash.com/ (appears to be down)
https://www.bitcoinmarket.com/ (appears to be down)
The exchange rate normally hangs around 200BTC per USD. but the price has gone up recently because of the /. publicity.
This site used to offer exchange but not at the moment: http://newlibertystandard.wetpaint.com/page/Exchange+Rate -
Economies of scale, likely
Likely, there is an 'economy-of-scale' element at play here. If they have to develop custom hardware for such a device, then it can be a huge challenge for them to cover their costs. A surprising 18% of Americans have some for of hearing disability: http://disabilityhistoryinamerica.wetpaint.com/page/Disability+Statistics+In+America You have to look at the addressable market size for these companies; if there are other countries internationally who do not have a large percentage of their population who use hearing devices. Compare this with netbooks where almost any person is a candidate for a new machine. That's a much more large addressable market for a computer manufacturer. That being said, I'm with you, I wish these devices could be far more affordable.

Re:Sky coverage + Observing Time = Discoveries
Indeed, she is working on Tim Puckett's search team. Tim Puckett is a very driven amateur supernova hunter who collaborates with a number of other observers, like Jack Newton, who is the other co-discoverer listed. They collect massive amounts of data each night with semi and full automatic telescopes Basically they don't have the time to sift through all of it. Hence they created a search team of amateurs looking through their data. Caroline was part of this search team. Tim Puckett and his team have discovered hundreds of supernovae so far and show no sign of stopping.
She didn't spent hours on end in the dark staring through a telescope. She didn't put up her own supernova search (which is more or less impossible for a 14yo, due to the huge financial step you have to take and the amount of time it takes). She spent hours looking through images generated by automatic telescopes. It is great that she had the dedication to go through it but it isn't very hard. If you go through enough data it is certain you will find a supernova (I believe they find a supernova on 1 image out of 9000). The hard part is setting up a telescope to scan the sky, calibrate each image and present it to you.
It does disservice to the "co-discoverers" to not mention them in the summary. Without them Caroline Moore likely wouldn't have had data to sift through. I don't know the exact story but the part of each discoverer is probably: Tim Puckett coordinates the supernova search program, Jack Newton made the discovery image and Caroline Moore noticed the supernova.

Jack Newton's website
Caroline's storyAs a last note. The days of amateur supernova hunting are quite numbered. Two large professional telescopes with aim to provide close to 24 hour surveillance of the sky will come online in the comming years. LSST and PanStarrs will sweep the skies with large apertures, huge CCD camera's and an impressive field of view. When those projects are running amateurs will have to aim for the holes that aren't observed...

Intentionaly and with a computer, not a telescope
Hearing that a 16 year old had found a supernova she pronounced "I could beat her".

CurrenCostFor electricity consumption monitoring, I also vote for the CurrentCost.
It is quite cheap (30 UKP), and is a very geek-friendly product. It has the all important serial interface which sends out the data every 6 seconds, but it is a TTL-level interface, which gives purchasers the oportunity to exercise or develop their hardware skills, by constructing their own interface with the widely available MAX232 chip and a few capacitors. It also provides an oportunity to exercise software skills when parsing and displaying the XML data the port sends out.
It's almost as if the designers decided to provide an interface, but also wanted to provide a few challenges for users to solve.
Here are some more links from CurrentCost fans:

Another channel: FacebookA lot of politicians have Facebook pages, and that's a good place to leave them a message as well. Here's a thread I started up on Nancy Pelosi's page. True, right now they probably aren't paying a lot of attention to their Facebook pages
... but if they start getting 10, 20, 50, 100 messages a day that could change. We've got a list-in-progress of politicians pages here on our wiki
... other links (and formatting cleanup) greatly appreciated.jon

The FISA fight's continuing into next year ...... and so a lot of what this ad is about is reminding people that it's not over. The lawsuits by the ACLU and others are likely to keep things alive into the next administration; we expect a FISA reform bill to be introduced in Congress in the first couple months of the new session.
Now is the time to start getting the word out -- and testing out which methods do or don't work. Check out Get FISA Right's strategy on our wiki for our thinking on how this fits into the bigger picture.

More information about the myBO campaign
There's a lot more information about the Senator Obama - Please Vote NO on Telecom Immunity - Get FISA Right my.barackobama.com campaign on the Get FISA right wiki. Check it out, and please join the group! Mike Stark's Will Obama feel the sting of social networking? on OpenLeft gives some great context on the campaign. And there's a Facebook group too. Are we web 2.0 or what?

Sony VAIO UX does it too.
This is hardly anything new, Leopard has been running on the Sony VAIO UX for awhile now. The UX is about the same size, and double the performance of the OQO http://micropctalk.wetpaint.com/page/Installing+Macintosh+OSX+10.5+(Leopard)?t=anon

Re:Double standards...Well then, label our American democratic project a hypocracy and let's get on with it.
I'm not willing to be so cynical. I believe in the enlightened ideals upon which this country was built. I believe in the virtuous nature of a democratic-style government. I believe in the goodness of my fellow man, and in our capacity to come together and strive for something greater. Fundamentally, I believe in our ability to own our government, and make it work for us.
And I also believe we have a lot of work to do to get there.
The frontline battle is to get people to believe, to eschew a cynicism that does nothing but maintain the power of the status quo, and feel the sense of empowerment that our founding fathers intended us to have as citizens. To stop looking to government for answers and quick-fixes, but instead to participate in government to help seek common understanding and reach a social consensus on how to deal with harsh realities. To get people to believe that all races, genders, and generations are capable of this participation, and yet, recognizing that this is a skill, to mentor and train those who would seek further involvement.
I realize this is a utopian vision, to a great extent, and as such, I don't necessarily have my sights focused on an endpoint. Rather, this ongoing process of self-improvement, or the potential for this process, is what makes America great. We are a people that founded itself in the pursuit of something greater, and while our demise has often been proclaimed, wave after wave of generation has risen up to renew this pursuit. My vision is not for the endpoint, the realization of some grand society, but simply that this process that forms the strength of country not die out completely! And oh, how some in power would love to see this end...
To quote one of my favorite movies - I find your lack of faith disturbing. I understand cynicism, I see how people become frustrated with government, but I believe there's a better way.
Is Mr. Obama taking applications for speechwriters? :) Well, I'm afraid to say it, but it is more republic-like or fascist. I don't want to go off on tangents here, but, suffice it to say that the general sentiment amongst the populace would be close to congruent with the idea that the government is no longer serving the public, but rather suppressing it.
Seriously though, I would be in the first wave of a rebellion. Sort of ironic that you would quote a high ranking primary officer in the oppression of scores of otherwise rightful citizens...albeit on tv.
