dave writes "In the newest Halloween Document (mirror), Eric Raymond analyzes Microsoft's 'Get The Facts' road show. The anti-Linux arguments they are using now -- and, even more, the arguments they're *not* using -- reveal how desperate Microsoft is getting. He explains why he thinks we need to focus more on government adoptions, and predicts serious ugliness during the next year."

dave writes "I founded and managed Linux Today in 1998, bringing it up from nothing into the most powerful and large Linux news website in the world, in less than a year. I am now calling on the Linux community to boycott my creation until its current owners stop accepting money from Microsoft to publish blatantly anti-Linux/pro-Microsoft ads."

dave writes "GNU/Linux vendors Debian, Mandrake, Red Hat, and SUSE have joined together to give a common statement about the Forrester report entitled "Is Linux more Secure than Windows?". Despite the report's claim to incorporate a qualitative assessment of vendor reactions to serious vulnerabilities, it treats all vulnerabilities are equal, regardless of their risk to users. As a result, the conclusions drawn by Forrester have extremely limited real-world value for customers assessing the practical issue of how quickly serious vulnerabilities get fixed."

dave writes "Novell announced that it has finalized a $50 million investment from IBM, and that IBM can now begin shipping SUSE Linux on all IBM server platforms. Historically, IBM has been a 'Red Hat shop,' and one has to wonder if this is a harbinger of things to come."

dave writes "ESR has opened the issue of pressuring Sun to open source Java, and today IBM throws in their own commitment toward this end. IBM has published an open letter to Sun, proposing that the two companies collaborate on an independent project to open source Java, saying that IBM is ready to provide technical resources and code for the open source Java implementation while Sun provides the open source community with Sun materials, including Java specifications, tests and code."

dave writes "In 1999, I editorialized that the browser was the battleground that would win or lose us the whole thing. 4 years later, in light of the excellent Firefox 0.8 release it is time to update the article with a slightly more optimistic view."

Finally, a few minutes to clear out the submissions box. First up Dave Whitinger wrote in to tell us that Three Point's news has expanded in 3 lists (Press, Security and Software News). Han-Wen Nienhuys sent us a link to a project he has been working on called LilyPond. It is a sheet music layout program ala TeX. Looks pretty excellent (if you're into that sorta thing :) Bill Lynch wrote in to warn us that Dave "Zoid" Kirsch (Linux Quake Port Guy) would like some comments on support of linux libraries. Stomped has a link to Dave's .plan file. Albert Strasheim wrote in to plug a Linux t-shirt design contest. Winners get Amazon credit and free shirts, so you designers out there may want to hop over (wonder if I should submit DFTP:) Finally, Brian Vincent sent us a link to something from Graphon called GO-Global that accelerates X apps 300-1000%. AIX and Solaris already use it, but now there's a linux port.

Matthew Tebbens wrote in to tell us that he's revamped LinuxApps.com. Pretty cool. Ben Hutchings wrote in to say that supposedly RH5 has been ported unofficially to the Amiga? Any word on this? Christopher Gutteridge sent us the nuttiest thing I've seen in some time: The Visible Mars Bar Project is one of the coolest pages I've seen in awhile. Nate and I were gonna do a Bananna awhile back, but just never got around to it. Definately worth a gander if you're familiar with the visible human project.
