Linux server
I was looking for some more information about this on the Winamp forums.
I happened to run across this thread which seems to have links to a Linux nsv-encoder/server for the NSV.
I'm still looking for a Linux player, if anyone has any links I'd appreciate it. I don't want to have to resort to WINE. -
Re:Will NullSoft honor...
A look at the FAQ reveals this:
I guess there's not even the slightest chance that my old serial number from 1999 will still work, huh?
Hahahahahahahaha. Hahahaha. Haha. Hah. Ha. Sorry. It doesn't.
Or the quicker answer: No. -
Re:Ripping and Burning is Pro only
Take a look at this forum entry: Most Requested Features / Plug-ins
At the bottom is a link to an Ogg encoder, which is IMHO the better format. Couldn't get iTunes to work with my ogg-files without freezing (not even speaking of ripping with iTunes to ogg ...)

Re:Link to privacy policy returns 404
Nullsoft's privacy policy is listed here.
Why would you want to use your audio player to encode, and encode to mp3s at that? Get the right tool for the job, CDex to make ogg, flac, or even mp3 if you so desire. And you can go to RareWares to obtain updated dll files for encoding via CDex. I don't see any problem with a Pro version so long as necessary functionality from a media player isn't taken out.

winamp 3 alpha for linux
There is also an unsupported alpha version of Winamp3 for linux here. u/p=wa3linux/llamawhip
Yep, it's winamp 3, it's buggy (it's winamp 3).. but may be we have some hope..
I still would like to have iTunes for linux.. -
Annoying playlist problem
I was excited to see some added stability to winamp so I gleefully downloaded Winamp5 and removed Winamp3. Now I cant load my bs4 playlists created in Winamp3. Whats the solution? The geniuses at Winamp want me to reinstall winamp3? What the Hell? From their FAQ: "What about my precious B4S playlists? Those are currently not loadable. However, you can convert them in Winamp3 to M3U or PLS playlists.
:)" -
Re:Link to privacy policy returns 404
Maybe they have updated it in the last two hours, but you can find their privacy policy at http://www.winamp.com/disclaimer.php

Re:Link to privacy policy returns 404
The changes you make about the different panels aren't neccesarily due to the new version of the software. Winamp's new skinning system, introduced in 3.0, allows a skinner to put anything he wants on any screen they desire. The placement of the equalised on main windows is just due to the skin included with the default install.
Personally, I use the MMD3 skin. It's simply GUI perfection. And still works in Winamp 5.0. What a great idea to be backwards compatible. -
Re:2.0
Check out this plugin, it does what you describe on winamp 2.

Re:Where's Crossfade?
it's in there, for free too.

shoutcast video
Another, very interesting feature is NSV streaming video.
Like the 'internet radio' stations streamed by shoutcast, there are a few internet TV stations. This my friends, is truely significant. Winamp becomes a digital-tv tuner (....i dont mean HDTV). People will be able to stream out any video they'd like -- the other day I watched a few episodes of aqua teen hunger force, some pr0n, and the movie Phone Booth.
Imagine a million streams of public access tv, mixed up with random bits of quality niche movies/shows....
THAT is what makes winamp5 cool. Now, i might just be ignorant, but is there another app that puts a selection of streaming video stations together for you to surf? -
Re:MP3 patent
Looking at their feature descriptions, shouldn't a group as influencial as Nullsoft be pushing better slogans than "Rip/encode music to MP3", in favour of "Rip your music to hard drive", in any format the user chooses of course. Ideally, the default format would be Ogg Vorbis and could be as simple as a button labelled "Copy music". I realise that takes away some incentive to pay, but it's the right thing to do, is it not?

Re:Link to privacy policy returns 404
Nothing big there methinks.Their help page, which is available by clicking on the help in winamp is also not available see!
I just downloaded it before the /. effect (got the link from ars) , and it does look dfferent. Equaliser is no longer a seperate panel, it is part of the main panel (I am calling each seperate piece in winamp 2.x a panel, eg. main player, equaliser, playlist , visualistation etc.) .
The preferences menu is back to what it was in 2.x almost. The player appears bigger than 2.x or 3.x on my screen, I suppose it is designed for some huge resolution monitors.
Maybe some internal changes too, turning on equaliser to maximum somehow doesnt seem to cause the cracking sound on my speakers anymore, Im not sure but it does seem to do software amplification better. -
anyone else get this?
When I go to http://winamp.com it looks different than when I go to http://www.winamp.com Why?

Ripping and Burning is Pro only
Looks like you have to pay $15 to get MP3 encoding and CD burning functionality. Considering a lot of people want to rip and burn to save money (read: nicking songs!), this seems a pretty stupid idea if they want to go better than iTunes, and any other software which will do it for free.
-
Link to privacy policy returns 404
See?
Also, if you're going to compare it to iTunes, mention the fact that you can't do a lot of things (like ripping to MP3) unless you pay for the Pro version.
iTunes is free, right?
So maybe somebody should mention this. -
Link BrokenGet your copy now! Note, last link requires some other OS.
Also note, the link does appear to look at the referrer. Able to get to the file from WinAmp.com, but not from the direct link.

The 'Pro' version
I noticed they're charging for the mp3 ripping... (understandable; they have to pay for the licensing) Couldn't they make a freeware 'ogg-pro' version that doesn't have to pay for the stupid mp3 licensing, and still gives people the 'pro' name? That would help ogg take off pretty seriously, I would think.

Re:Winamp's Time is Over
Winamp 5 is nearing release, and these layoffs (as regrettable as they are) will not effect the Winamp 5 release.
The nullsoft members who were laid off were working on streaming media.
I believe that with the advent of winamp pro (for full speed cd ripping and burning and mp3 encoding) which will cost a small amount of $. We will see winamp having a steady revenue stream that will hopefully keep the core winamp team safe.

Re:Winamp 3 shelved
Hmm, that'd be me. Being rather melodramatic.
I was rather more optimistic about things until yesterday. Most of Winamp3 is now open-sourced (except the skinning and scripting engine), and there are people working on a fully open-source version of Winamp3, now known as wasabi.player (and much improved since the old, old release which is still on the winamp.com frontpage). -

Winamp 3 shelvedInteresting quote from Russ on the winamp forum:
How about "never". The official line is that Winamp3 development is now stopped. Shelved. At least temporarily. And here I am sitting here trying to look optimistic. It's not "soon" any more, it's "maybe".
Find it here. The golden rule of customer service is: Give the customer what they want. The customer didn't want Winamp3, that much is clear. The customer didn't care about the most powerful API this side of, well, anything. They didn't care about platform independence. The average Winamp user is only vaguely aware of what Linux is, let alone how to use it. Much less than 1% of Winamp users want Linux support.
Personally I don't want Winamp 3 because every version I tried was horribly unstable and I had to end up uninstalling it. The only really cool thing about it was the media library and that ended up in 2.x. So, I never saw any need to migrate.

Re:Someone please save WinAmp!!!
If you read the winamp forums this isn't their whole team that's going away. Two of the guys that were 'let go' were the lead developers for Winamp3. From my take on it, they're still working on 5.

Re:Does affect Nullsoft
A new version is imminent. Unfortunately AOL are still debating the definition of "imminent" (it's finished, just the actual release is held up for unknown reasons).
-
Re:Someone please save WinAmp!!!Winamp 5 looks amazingly good. The Internet TV feature is the "Instant On" that Windows Media Player just couldn't get right. Funny thing is Winamp 5 betas are circulating, and seem to be actively developed with new betas released fairly frequently, but there's no mention on it on the Nullsoft or Winamp pages.
A Google search will find you lots of places to get it though.
-
Re:Does affect Nullsoft> Winamp will continue though
I beg to differ. The last entry on the developer page (here) was dated 19 March 2003. I think that spells about cancelledware to me. Maintaining a website just isn't good enough.
-
Re:Does affect Nullsoft
Let's try that again. Preview button, pfft.
Two Nullsoft employees (Brennan and Aus) were laid off yesterday. Winamp will continue though. -

Re:I read the article
My people call it "iTunes."
No doubt, why don't they just integrate rendezvous into Winamp or make a plugin? -
Re:Um..Xmms..
works better then anything I've been able to use on my Windows pc here at work.
Ever tried... Winamp 2?
Nullsoft liked XMMS so much they decided to make a cheap clone of it for Windows, so there you go.
(Yeah, it's a joke, I know XMMS is the clone). -
Re:Has anybody noticed...
Oppps, I should have previewed. The WinAmp boards links are here. under the heading "RE: Skipping / freezing / distortion, clicking & popping during playback". Your problem sounds the same as the one in this topic.

Summary of all posts so far, with site links.
I've tried a good deal of the stuff listed. The following are the most intuitive, free, software products I have encountered. They increase productivity, and are stable.
Freeware List: If you can think of it, it's in here.
OpenCD: Precompiled CD with all open source software.
Doom9.org: Famed site for lots of media tools.
Trillian: AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo! IM software all in one.
AVG Anti-Virus: Free AV
SpyBot (Spam Remover): Free Spam Remover/Search & Destroy
Firebird: Web browser w/ adblock & popup control.
FileZilla FTP: FTP Client
Smart FTP: Free Client, better looking, faster
Kerio: Personal Firewall, better than ZoneAlarm
Textpad: Text Editor.
PuTTY: SSH Client.
CygWin: Linux emulation.
FFDshow: DivX/XVid decoder.
TweakUI: Microsoft's famed Powertoy for Windows XP.
WinAce: Fast, high-compression (40% smaller, faster compression than ZIP).
WinAmp: MP3 player, with this skin.
dBpowerAMP: Music Converter (copies CDs to MP3)
One last thing, don't use Outlook. Find a better program: Eudora, Thunderbird, or PegasusMail (in that order) are safer/more powerful. Windows comes bundled with great software, just like Mandrake - but their internet package leaves much (security) to be desired. -

My "must have" util Cds
"I'm buying a new mid-grade laptop computer, which I plan to dual-boot between Windows XP Home and Mandrake 9.x. Before its arrival in a few weeks I'm trying to think of what 'essential' software I'll need to make a usable home system. In general I'd like to spend as little money as possible (free is good). As far as my needs, think 'typical family PC' without an emphasis on gaming. I know I can get something like Open Office for word processing, presentation, etc. needs, but is there such a good thing as a good free virus checker? A good free email client? A handy web browser? What would you consider the top 10 (or so) pieces of software for a new home system, bearing in mind that I need software for both the Windows and Linux side of things?""
These are the files I keep on my "Esential CDs" that I bring around to help out other non-techs (Windows users) people. (Of course because they are financially broke after paying $200 for their Operating System, they want everything else to be free.) ;-)

Some Suggestions of My OwnWhen you install the software on the users' machine, please make sure that you explain to them, if at least briefly, on how to use ALL of them. This way, when the users start using Mozilla or OpenOffice, they won't immediately succumb to using IE or MSoffice again (not an option on Linux, but at least they won't feel confused
:) ).Software I think deserves to be on your list:
- Mozilla Seamonkey Suite Your "classic" mozilla install
- Mozilla Firebird. The smaller Mozilla browser, but still damn good
- Mozilla Thunderbird. Mozilla mail, smaller yet. Complete with built in spam filtering
:) - Winamp 2.x. Can't beat a classic
- Sun J2RE 1.4.2 Probably not necessary, but best to get it installed and out there.
- RealOne Player BASIC. Despite what you think about Real, RealOne isn't such a horrible player, and RV9 isn't a bad codec. Their marketing department needs to be hit with a giant stick though, so make sure you disable all the "automatic options" in realone. Link is to a direct download of the Realone basic player, no hunting for the free version
:) CDex Damn good ripping software for windows, and one of the easiest ways to get Ogg on windows.

My List for Everyday Use
These are some of the free (speech or beer) software I'd install on a family, non-gaming machine:
- Web Browser: Mozilla or Mozilla Firebird
- E-mail: Mozilla (cross-platform), Mozilla Thunderbird (cross-platform), Evolution (Gnome), or KMail (KDE)
- Office Suite: OpenOffice.org
- Media Player: QuickTime (Windows), Zinf (cross-platform), RealPlayer (cross-platform), WinAmp (Windows), MPlayer (Windows), XMMS (Linux)
- Image Viewer: IrfanView (Windows)
- Instant Messaging: Gaim (cross-platform)
- Personal Information Management: Palm Desktop Software (great PIM suite even if you don't own a Palm)
- Other: Acrobat Reader (although I'm weary of their DRM), Java 2 Runtime Environment, Macromedia Flash and Shockwave players, Ad-Aware (spyware remover for Windows), ZoneAlarm, Sygate Personal Firewall (firewall, alternative to ZoneAlarm), Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus, FileZilla, WinRAR (not free, shareware with nag window), Ofoto desktop software (basic photo album and touch-ups, even if you don't use Ofoto's online services)
Some other software I'd install on my own desktop (dev), in decreasing order of importance:
- Cygwin, bascially all packages
- UltraEdit32 (45-day trial shareware)
- TightVNC
- Ghostscript and GSView
- Java 2 SDK
- Eclipse
- Borland JBuilder Personal
- ActiveState Perl, Python, Tcl/Tk (yes, even though they are in Cygwin), Jython
- GIMP
- POV-Ray
- At least one of Apache, Tomcat, or Plone (Zope)
- HTTrack (a website copier)
