Re:Fermi Paradox is useless
Feel free to read the books.
All I mentioned above is what he wrote. AND MORE...
Like how the motivation for human traitors who contact the aliens to come and exterminate the humanity is that they are extreme treehuggers, trying to practice inter-species communism.
Or how "our heroes" surprise-kill everyone on a ship (boat, not star-) by stringing up nanowires in ship's path, which then silently slice everyone on the ship in two, before anyone has a chance to destroy any data.
Which works because apparently ships move through the Panama canal faster then one can see and react to people in front of them being sliced in half. Also, feel free to read the articles I linked above.
"Ken Liu, a Hugo Award-winning author and the translator of the popular Chinese science-fiction novel 'The Three-Body Problem'" works for a SciFi shop which produces "corporate visioning" - "customized stories for the likes of Visa, Ford, Pepsi, Samsung, and NATO."
And Chinese ARE actively pushing for more Chinese SciFi. Have been for a while now.
At least since the tenth 5-year plan (2001-2005).http://www.gov.cn/english/offi...
We need to disseminate scientific knowledge, combat ignorance and superstition, and encourage healthy lifestyles. We need to further develop various cultural undertakings, such as literature and art, journalism and publishing, and radio, film and television. We should adhere to the principles of serving the people and socialism and of "letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend." We need to produce more and better cultural and intellectual works. We need to maintain the correct orientation of public opinion, and place strong emphasis on the establishment and management of new information media. We need to build more libraries, cultural centers, science and technology centers, museums, archives, and recreation centers for juveniles and senior citizens. Mass participation activities should be continued to promote cultural and ethical progress. We need to deepen reform of the system for managing cultural undertakings, improve the economic policies concerning cultural undertakings, and promote the development of industries related to culture.
Also... this part...
We must use legal means to combat ethnic separatist activities, religious extremist forces, violent and terrorist activities, cults, and illegal activities carried out under the guise of religion. We need to continue our campaign against the Falungong cult, and further expose and condemn the anti-human, anti-social and anti-science nature of the cult, which has become a tool for domestic and overseas forces hostile to our socialist government. We need to mete out severe punishment to the small number of criminals while making unremitting efforts to unite, educate and rescue the vast majority of people who have been taken in.
Is it surprising, after reading all that about cults, that those traitors of the human race in the books act very much like a cult?

Re:Ignoring China ?
Serious students of PRC policy in regards to the role of science and technology need to read China’s Program for Science and Technology Modernization: Implications for American Competitiveness . In particular...
...Viewing science and technology as the key to economic development and international competitiveness, the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has launched a comprehensive effort to become an innovative nation by 2020 and a global scientific power by 2050. China’s effort will draw significantly on the resources and planning role of the state, whose national science programs have long made targeted investments in research and development (R&D) efforts in areas deemed critical China’s economic and military needs...Additionally, this could shed further light on the topic - State Council, Guojia Zhongchangqi Kexue he Jishu Fazhan Guihua Gangyao (2005 - 2020) National Medium to Long - term Plan for the Development of Science and Technology (2005 - 2020), February 9, 2006. http://www.gov.cn/jrzg/2006 - 02/09/content_183787_2.htm
I agree that America needs to wake up to more than corporate "profitability" that has enabled the transfer of manufacturing, product development, and intellectual property into China. China clearly knew what they wanted when they opened it's doors to the West and enabled US corporations to fill America's shelves with cheap goods. It is only a means to a much bigger end for China and it is coming at a very steep cost to the common citizens (ie: labor, engineering) in America.
The same goes for China. Industrially, they're getting to where the US was in the mid-1800s. Their space technology is in the 1950s, and early 1960s. Socially, they're pre-1750s in many ways. Militarily, they're in the 1910s, at best
I certainly hope that you are NOT an American.
If you are, please, I beseech you, please WAKE THE FUCK UP.
America is in a steep decline, and the rate of decline has quicken in the past 2 decades.
And America's decline is in stark contrast with the rapid growth of Brazil, India and China.

Re:Not just cars
Because of all the pollution, China is pushing electric hard.
They've failed to meet their sales targets so far, but the Chinese government has shown it will burn money to achieve long term goals. And since battery technology is the biggest obstacle to lower prices, a Chinese company is buying battery maker A123 Systems.

Know what you're talking about.I understand this may not be the right place to ask people to think critically about issues, but at least I wish people know what they're talking about, not what they think or imagine the issue is.
The following is the so-called "draft guideline" in Chinese, which was published to call for public comments:
http://www.gov.cn/gzdt/2009-11/05/content_1456838.htm
The Chinese government is doing its job trying to regulate the treatment just days after the critical incidents and this is more formal policy draft. The title would be more appropriate to say: Chinese government propose to ban... What's so wrong about it?
I know for a fact thousands of American gay youth are still being checked into similar boot camps to rid of the gayness in them. When would the US Ministry of Health take a stand on the issue instead of hiding behind the religious freedom principle?

Re:And per capita?
With me, I mean the collective Western World of First Countries (Europe, US).
I am referring to the G8+5 ruling, which supersedes the Kyoto Protocol, which intends to reduce global emissions.
Seeing as China's industry is currently booming, it is hard to expect them to reduce their carbon output.Apparently, they're already doing rather well

Re:Dear all China/Communist hatersFrom a comment from TFA: I also received confirmation from one of the CN human rights reps that the internet and television shut down is VOLUNTARY and OPTIONAL as part of the the three day mourning period, some that was lost in translation earlier.
:) If you have somebody to translate: this is the original notice from the Chinese government. The relevant part basically says "all public entertainment activities shall be ceased". I'm not familiar with how much direct control over websites the Chinese government has, and whether "public" means "public as in government/state owned" or "public as in publicly accessible", but it seems that they won't pull you into jail if a website owner doesn't comply. Besides, most Chinese sites are more than willing to participate.
Compare with Slashdot title: "China Cuts Access to Entertainment Web Sites". And then people start bitching about how China is getting more oppressive etc and crackdown on entertainment sites... wtf.
Not lies? Willful ignorance?
And I admit I was a bit too sarcastic. I usually don't buy into the "lies" thing, but sometimes you just can't help but have that conclusion. Did you read about that Nepal "Chinese police" somewhere in the discussion? There are numerous other such examples, which sound perfectly "right" to westerners because most aren't familiar with issues in China, but are simply outright ridiculous when viewed by anybody with a clue about China. This one is simply a bit over the top. I mean, we all know that slashdot doesn't have any journalistic standards, but slashdot frontpage "news" linking to a site that comments on some rumors on Twitter?
Sometimes I feel that the western attitude towards China related reporting is like this: anything that paints China in a bad light "sounds" right, so it goes through without much scrutiny. Anything that paints China is a positive light "sounds" wrong, and people just have to twist it to sound like there's some ulterior motive. If you look and read carefully with an unbiased eye, you might see it yourself (just put your tinfoil hat on, the Chinese "nationalists" exaggerates things too).
I'm all for freedom of information and I personally think the great firewall of China is stupid (especially the wiki ban), but one should base criticisms on fact and not false rumors from people who have an anti-China agenda. -
