Re:Typical Class Action
I have to have my PS3 serial number.
Unless it is still registered to PSN. IIRC you can find out the serial number there.
For the higher payment, I have to have incredibly unreasonable proof that I used OtherOS functionality.
I could have that proof within minutes.

Jul 11 21:12:21 >CronoCloudCronoCloudCronoCloud Hi, does anyone know of an xchat sysinfo script that works well with YDL on the PS3? I've been googling but haven't had much sucess.
Note that CTCP version shows me using Xchat, via YDL6.1, on a PPC64, that runs at 3.19 GHz....which is most certainly not a Mac, since G5s only went up to 2.7 GHz. And it is highly doubtful that someone is going to have a IBM pSeries in their home, which means that machine is a PS3....which of course it was as I stated in the chat. I eventually did find a sysinfo script that worked to a certain extent

Oh look, there's a CronoCloud who is apparently a moderator at the YDL.net forum who posted a link to this story on Slashdot.
For my sake, proving that I used OtherOS is VERY easy. I think I have screenshots too.
Of course, there are a few config files on my current Fedora machine that date back to my PS2 Linux days.

Re:Death Rattle of an Industry
Time and again? That's a bit of an exaggeration there, don't you think? Are you referring to OtherOS, that was a single incident.
and AFAIK the only thing they consider a privilege is their network, not the console itself.
I did run OtherOS by the way, YDL, and moderated over on the YDL forums. Was a regular on the PS2 Linux forum as well. So I'm not unfamiliar with the issue you are probably referring to.
And as I've said many many times:
It is the users choice as to whether they keep OtherOS (and lose access to PSN because the PS3 isn't running the most recent firmware), or upgrade it and lose OtherOS. Now you may make the valid complaint that one shouldn't have had to make that choice, and I agree. But Sony felt that they had to do "something" about the vulnerabilities revealed and OtherOS users were just a rounding error against the horde of users who never used it.
Supporting OtherOS also cost Sony money, and there were compatibility issues in regards to firmware not long before OtherOS was removed.

Got root?
This reminded me of a post regarding thoughts on Yellow Dog Linux being ported to velocity's stuff. It made me wonder if a more X11 friendly version of Linux could be ported to another inexpensive tablet running MIPS. Maybe more tablets like these will help make that happen. I'm getting to like the idea of running a phone inside Xnest.

Why Ubuntu? They dropped PPC support
I don't get it. Ubuntu officially dropped PPC support last year.
So, why would Popular Mechanics recommend Ubuntu when you could download Yellow Dog Linux (for free as well from public mirrors), which is developed by the company hired by Sony to develop linux for the PS3. This sounds somewhat odd.
Disclaimer: I work for Terra Soft Solutions, so I've clearly got a bias here. -
Re:PPCEVen more important as Yellow Dog Linux is moving inch by inch to a subscription model for their products.
(For reference, Yellow Dog Linux is probably the biggest supplier of PPC LInux and the only supplier that sells Mac Hardware with Linux preloaded.)
