Glad I live in Oregon
When will states realize that they do not have to tax their citizens to death to implement progressive policies and programs? I live 10 minutes from the California border, I spent almost 10k a year more when I lived in California for the same level of living. They will implement a tax, you can bet your sweet zombie jesus they will. It was the only state I have lived in where I was paying ~9% sales tax. Look at the fucking metrics on taxes and where your state stands.

Re:To be clear........I've also lived in Canada and the U.S., and I have to tell you it's nice to buy something and pay the price on the sticker.... not up to 15% more once they punch it into the register and the tax gets calculated.
Up to 15% more? Where? Must be somewhere in Canada, because in the US the highest sales tax is in Tennesee, at 9.35%. What you see as an inconvenience is actually saving you money. The fact that people see exactly how much money the filthy local government is taking from them (and can therefore express their outrage when it's raised) is the reason why it's not absurdly high, like in countries with a VAT or GST.

Re:For clarity's sake
This is fuzzy math. Income taxes do not represent the lions share of taxes in the U.S. Payrole taxes selectively over-tax the poor and middle class and are not counted in this equation, nor are sales taxes by which most cities and states make their money. this can be heavily graded.

Re:make them poor people pay the tax!
So it is unfair that people pay around abouts the same in taxes?
Go look at the example. Alternately, look at the wage break down of how much people pay in taxes. If you want to compare to a state that has a more fair system, look South Carolina.[...] adding an income tax has a certain amount of stupidity. Honestly have you ever heard of a politician reducing a tax?
You must not have understood. I'm talking about an adjustment to the system. What most people don't understand (and this is oging to sound stupid, but it's true) is that the government both collects taxes and pays for programs that you enjoy. For example, if you ask people if they would rather pay social security tax and receive social security, most say yes. If you ask if people like social security tax, most say no. You are caught in this hole, my friend. If Tennessee did change the tax code they would have to add programs to sustain both taxes--there would have to be a reason to do this.At the end of the day, I guess I just don't understand why there is a tax on not earning enough money. It seems like times in my life when I'm earning more money I would rater pay a higher proportional tax than times in my life when I am earning less.

make them poor people pay the tax!You gotta love Tennessee where the poor people have to pay most of the tax. tennesseans for fair taxation has lots of good information about how the tax code works there. here is a good example.
This relates to this post because internet access is not something that poor people can afford, i.e. this is a regressive tax cut.

Fair Taxation
Well, there appear to be a number of people out there concerned with fair taxation. While many make broad claims and appeal to "what is right" the Tennesseans for Fair Taxation takes a more detailed look at the actual effects of a sales tax system look at this page as an example of what is wrong with this "fair tax." gw
