Official Martian Flag Revealed

Cebert writes "An article on CNN discusses the new flag for the planet Mars. This just brings back thoughts of Daffy and Marvin duking it out on Planet X..." And memories of many fine Heinlein tomes, too. Prof. Bernardo de la Paz would have approved, I'm sure.

so which martian's decided on this? if you can't land a spaceship on it properly you might as well give it a flag, the more I see of the space industry, the more I see those telephone sanitisers from hithchikers rearing their heads

I was a bit curious so I took a look at the Mars Society webpage at http://www.marssociety.org. They have some interesting info on progress towards the exploration of Mars and related projects.

The Mars Society even appears to have some corporate sponsors, which dispells some of my initial thoughts that this could be some random group.

The picture at CNN looked like it had black vertical bars between the colors - probably just a lighting artifact, but it looked kind of cool like that. The background to the picture was the usual black space background, and it occurred to me it might be even better to have, instead of black bars, transparent bars separating the colors. That would make it uniquely different from any Earth flag, don't you think?

By the way - how long has this slashdot science section been up? A good idea, though not many people seem to frequent it...

Sure, they claim the colours are from the Kim Stanley Robinson books. So why do the colours remind me of the martian eyes from 'War of the Worlds'? (The 1950's film, not the book/concept album/computer game)
