Ask Sam Lantinga About SDL On PS2 And More

Sam Lantinga is the author and project lead of the Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL), which was recently ported amid general acclaim to the Sony PS2. People have been curious about SDL for a long time (it's been around for a while, and used in quite a few games). He's not just a library programmer though; he also designs games (in this case, working with Lauren MacDonell) and thinks hard and lucidly about the intricacies of information display within them. Here's your chance to ask Sam directly what's on your mind about SDL, game design and more. Note -- many questions are answered within the links already given, so hit those first. One question per post, please (but as many posts as you'd like) -- we'll forward the highest-rated questions on to Sam, and post his answers soon after.

Initially, one would think you're an idiot for posing such a stupid question. On second thought, though, you're a fucking moron.

However, there already is an ABI interface. It's called "Windows 2000/ Windows XP"

I heard there was an elite team of super-smaerty mans working on the SDL 1.3 API. Any truth to these rumors of a secret cabal that directs the future of cross-platform multimedia? Can we assume that Singer, Songwriter, and Open Source Advocate David Olofson is one of them?

With all the various attempts at "standardizing" codebases, project often add 50-75% more overhead than if they'd just coded the damn thing without trying to create a "generic, extensible layer". Biggest headache is when some software architect gets involved on a project who has ZERO actual application delivery experience and insists on spending 6 months making everything modular and pluggable.. 6 months later we've got a basecode that no one will ever use again, and is a pain in the ass to work with for our OWN purposes.. leave well enough alone, use the APIs set for by the system, the hardware manufacturer, or whomever and just get the freaking job done..
