Miyazaki's Future w/ Disney
An anonymous reader sent us an interesting little article about
Miyazaki and Disney. Disney of course owns the rights to distribute his films (like to pick a gigantic example Princess Mononoke) to worldwide audiences. Apparently lackluster profits from Mononoke may jeopradize future Miyazaki titles release in the US, which would be terribly unfortunate considering that in the end, the DVD release of Mononoke was absolutely wonderful (although its a somewhat dark film for Mouse) This is all
tied to Spirited Away, his latest film which is apparently doing great things at the Japanese Box Office.
first post?
That says it all!
Let's have a close look at the costs involved when running a Linux system.
Linux' cost consists not only of the frequent updates, which require new cdrom's to be bought if you don't have a high speed Internet connection.
Another factor in Linux' cost is its maintenance. Linux requires a *lot* of maintenance, work doable only by the relatively few high-paid Linux administrators that put themselves - of course willingly - at a great place in the market. Linux seems to be needing maintenance continuously, to keep it from breaking down.
Add to this the cost of loss of data. Linux' native file system, EXT2FS, is known to lose data like a firehose spouts water when the file system isn't unmounted properly. Other unix file systems are much more tolerant towards unexpected crashes. An example is the FreeBSD file system, which with soft updates enabled, performance-wise blows EXT2FS out of the water, and doesn't have the negative drawback of extreme data loss in case of a system breakdown.
The upcoming 'solution' to this, EXT3FS, is nothing more than an ugly hack to put journaling into the file system. All the drawbacks of the ancient EXT2FS file system remain in EXT3FS, for the sake of 'forward- and backward compatibility'. This is interesting, considering that the DOS heritage in the Windows 9x/ME series was considered a very bad thing by the Linux community, even though it provided what could be called one of the best examples of compatibility, ever. When it's about Linux, compatibility constraints don't seem to be that much of a problem for Linux advocates.
Back to Linux' cost. Factor in also the fact that crashes happen much more often on Linux than on other unices. On other unices, crashes usually are caused by external sources like power outages. Crashes in Linux are a regular thing, and nobody seems to know what causes them, internally. Linux advocates try to hide this fact by denying crashes ever happen. Instead, they have frequent "hardware problems".
The steep learning curve compared to about any other operating system out there is a major factor in Linux' cost. The system is a mix of features from all kinds of unices, but not one of them is implemented right. A Linux user has to live with badly coded tools which have low performance, mangle data seemingly at random and are not in line with their specification. On top of that a lot of them spit out the most childish and unprofessional messages, indicating that they were created by 14-year olds with too much time, no talent and a bad attitude.
I could go on and on and on, but the conclusion is clear. Linux is not an option for any one who seeks a professional OS with high performance, scalability, stability, adherence to standards, etc.
Klerck, you old sodomite! What's gotten into you? I've never seen you post this frequently before.
to turn off the Anime stories.
Bambi is such a dear deer.
*sigh*
No balls, no respect.
dude, your posting history is hilarious. -1's like mad, and then a couple 4's for good measure. seeing how you're at -1, and i clicked a bad sourceforge link last week, i don't think so. no IHBT's around here.
I don't see why anime belongs on slashdot, sure lots of geeks watch anime. Lots of geeks also watch basketball and football, but they aren't covered.
/. editors love it. I'm fine with that just keep it on anime fu.
/. and think taco does a great job, i just don't think anime really belongs here.
Now I watch anime, in fact i'm in my schools anime club, but I honestly DON'T think it belongs here, it's obvious that the only reason is that taco and a few of the other
This isn't a troll, i truly love

I would like to see a higher percentage of computer-related articles.
We are in the middle of one of the biggest and most amazing social revolutions in history. More than 100,000 very well-educated people have decided to form a loose brotherhood and sisterhood to give the world a complete computer operating system. There are many stories in that.
I think there should be more stories about software development. Many of the big issues aren't being discussed enough, in my opinion. For example, there needs to be a more vigorous debate about computer language development, in my opinion.
This story is about a choice of entertainment. That choice is anyone's to make, but for Slashdot, it is off topic.
I block all anime titles for slashdot. yet this article still came up. Why are you forcing this on us?
Slipping Away...
...Darned buggy slashcode... :p
;)
Who cares if it's offtopic as long as it's true and affects us all?
I love DT but face it ... they're dinosaurs. People are ready to feel good about themselves again and *thats* why DT isn't on the top of anyones list.
However, what might be undestated is that advertising will make *anything* sell. At large the american public are sheep that will buy what they're show.
Free Techno/Jazz/DNB/MI Music by guys obsessed with monkeys!
Your assumption that anime are "cartoons" is way off base. Most of the few dozen anime movies I have on DVD are not cartoons suitable for children. At best, most of them would be classed NC-17, and certainly wouldn't be aired on a Saturday morning for the kiddies!
The comment on pedophile-pleasing imagery is largely a misunderstanding on your part. The Japanese market focuses more mature material on the teen audience than the North American market does, hence characters that the audience can identify with.
Personally I think it's pretty sad that Japanese movies targetted at their teen audience tend to be more thoughtful and plot/character rich than NA movies targetted at "adults". It makes Hollywood's opinion of the average American/Canadian pretty clear...
I do not fail; I succeed at finding out what does not work.
All it says is "No key found."
*WARNING!* The above link goes to http://www.comp-u-goat.net/ . DO NOT click it.
i watch anime! i'm an anime fan! idiot. You didn't even read my post because if you did you'd have known that.
/. Think about it.
/. stories, isn't it kind of odd that anime got thrown in? It's obvious that it's just for taco to talk about whatever interests him. He has anime fu let him post it there.
what i was saying was, that if anime belongs here so does football basketball and pretty much any other entertainment topic. I know i can turn it off, but I was simply stating that anime doesn't belong on
We have stories on computers, and anime. Now, Computers make up about 90% of
Anime OBVIOUSLY doesn't belong on this site.
Photos.
This only proves not EVERYONE likes anime. In fact the market looks a tad small.
What phallic symbols will we see in this Disney rendition of a "classic"? Penis swords? Vagina shields? Brick configurations that spell sex?
