It's pretty clear that SCO is trying to get IBM customers to pressure IBM to settle this. However, it frankly seems pretty absurd. The bottom line is that, as a customer, I am not responsible for IBM's alleged failure to maintain a proper license for UNIX. IBM's license is a license to *copy* UNIX software, and copying is the only activity that could possibly be prophibited. Given that IBM's customers already HAVE copies of AIX, unless IBM's license from SCO has some very odd language in it it seems extremely improbable that customers could lose the license they already have.
The goal of the lawsuit is to maintain the Unix Standard. This is not a bad thing. The Open Group owns the definition of Unix and the test suite, and of course the trademark. Things that don't certify to the standard can call themselves anything but "Unix". This sort of certification bound with a trademark is compatible with Open Source, and is a way that Open Source proponents have generally recommended that business people protect their brand and trademark.
Neither Linux nor the BSDs infringe upon this trademark.
I thought that apple paid the Open Group to certify themselves as a Unix, around the time that OS X came out. Suing over the name Unix doesn't sound very "open" to me. Guess they're trying to give SCO a run for the money in the bad PR department.
It has definitely become a generic term. I'd like to see the courts support Apple so that we can all use "Unix" without fear. e a generic term. Removing trademark status would benefit not only Apple, but the free Unixes, Linux and the BSDs. When was the last time that some company came out with Unix v9.0 or whatever?
Why should we let them place wiretaps on spammers, who, mind you, at present commit no crime? Why not just make spam a crime and let them get a warrent like any other enforcement agency? It seems, at the least, they should have to go before a judge. To give a commerce regulatory agency spying powers is absurd and smacks of a police state. Let them regulate commerce, but leave spying to law enforcement and national security.
It's been on openbsd for some time, and it's really nice to work with. unfortunately openbsd is still using libevent 0.5, while the latest version is 0.7 (there were some performance improvements, iirc).
I don't think this kind of thing NEEDS to be secret. While spam is annoying, it certianly doens't fall under a heavy enough category in my book (rape, murder, mass murder, etc) to require ANYTHING near secret investigative power...
If we all have the right to face our accuser - NOTHING should get in the way. Nothing short of the threat of further murder, at least in my book.

And now you understand how I feel. This was an april fools joke. I'd say about the same quality as the ones the editors posted. They weren't funny at all.
Well maybe it wasn't an april fools joke, but I just needed to say how bad those "jokes" were.
Well I've finally reached my limit. How many years of bad jokes have I put up with? Slashdot is turning too much like newsgroups there is just way too much noise to bother with anymore, and since slashdot doesn't have any porn like newsgroups I will not be visiting here anymore. Maybe just maybe if the editors were more professional, run spell check, check over their posts before posting it on the front page I wouldn't mind so much. I don't really think the ads have anything to do with me leaving. Slashdot has to make money some how. Heh. And I even have 5 mod points saved up. Oh well. See you all later, its been fun(well not really lately).
Believe it or not... but modern cell phones aren't that bad for you anymore. They have come a long way since the 5 pound "portable" cell phone. Nowadays you would get more radiation standing outside in the sun without sunblock then talking on a good cell phone.
The fact is, if a kernel is marked as stable it should be stable. If the 2.4 kernel came from Microsoft you would all be bashing the hell out of them. Maybe Linus needs to slow down, and look over his code before he releases it.
Maybe try porting to other open source systems as well. I would love to try this out, but I am running FreeBSD. I am sure it wouldn't take much to get a *BSD port working.
heh, phone number is busy...
What happened to my prefrence of excluding anime articles? It seems to have disapeared...
Quick How can the encylopedia companys blame this one the P2P networks!! Hurry up, we have people to sue!!

Why don't they make their own distro? Or buy Suse or Redhat? It would make sence, since they are getting to be so Linux oriented.

"People will be running AIX without a valid license"
That is complete FUD. All NEW users of AIX, but you can't take it back.
Friday the 13th?! Is this a really bad movie, or what? How long after this do you think we will be seeing the made-for-TV movie?

What is so unfair about Wal-Mart moving into the online DVD rental business?
Maybe now we will see some "innovations" in Netflix's offerings?

On the web site you say you are having trouble making a splash screen. And you now say you want voice commands on everything? Good luck to that!
"Q. How do I use anti-aliased fonts?
A. Set the GDK_USE_XFT environment variable. eg.: export GDK_USE_XFT=1"
and in windows I just click this button here...
Boring porn? There is a oxymoron if ever5 I saw one.
