Wood PCs For A Nepalese School
An Anonymous Coward writes: "The BBC runs a story about a Nepalese teacher who collects
old computer parts to set up the first computer-equipped school in
Nepal. They assemble the parts into wooden boxes! If you have old parts left, maybe you can donate something, too."
I was gonna get first post, but then I got high.
Now I'm posting late in the thread, and I know why...
Because I got high, because I got high, because I got high!
"One guy wrote that we should take all these Legos and build giant robots with which to attack Afghanastan." -- Rob Malda, Founder of Slashdot, a "News for Nerds" website, in a NPR report on post WTC gen-X, 10/22/2001
I, for one, would like to take a moment to thank Rob for setting us "Nerds" back where we belong. Way to make us look like a bunch of childish tech-heads with no conception of the real world! (That was sarcasm, you nincompoop!)
Nepal could use our help. It is a very poor country. The ruling family was so abusive that their own son, the crown prince, killed them.

Nepal's 48-hour king dies after royal massacre, June 3, 2001
"The former Crown Prince Dipendra was admitted to hospital late on Friday with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound after reportedly slaughtering most of his family with an assault rifle as they sat around a dinner table."

"Analysts say Gyanendra now faces a struggle to restore the role of the monarchy as a pillar of stability in the country of 22 million people where Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has faced violent street protests against his rule.

I just heard some good news from a manager friend of mine at VA linux.
Rumor has it, they finally realize what a mess slashcode is, and instead of
spending an infinite number of mythical man-hours trying to fix it, they've
purchased closed-source web-log software and a real database system to go
along with it. They're also switching to new servers. Either RS6000/AIX or
Sun/Solaris. There was even brief talk of using NT Advanced server with
clustering, but nidma pretty much squelched that.
The slashcode development team is getting laid off, as well as most of the
"sysadmins" (who didn't do anything besides reboot the servers twice a day).
The database and weblog vendor will be providing uptime and load performance
guarantees. the CmdrTaco, Hemos, etc. will still be around, but VA Linux has
the right to prevent certain slashdot items from being posted, so you won't
see this on the frontpage anytime soon.
Migration is currently ongoing, and there should be a "power outtage" before
next year when the new system is used.
Even thought this repudiates Open Source software, maybe it's best. We've
all seen formkeys problems, static pages, and the lameness filter that
prevents good comments but lets in ascii goatse.cx art. The new system
should hold up better under heavy loads, and include more intelligent troll
filtering.

Too true. Now pull down those pants and let's see what's doin'.
The goatse guy for president. Win one for the gaper!
The worst terrorist attack in recorded history occurred last month, and now we're involved in a WAR and you people have the gall to be discussing the first computer-equipped school in Nepal???? My *god*, people, GET SOME PRIORITIES!
The bodies of the thousands of innocent civilians who died (and will die) in these unprecedented events could give a good god damn about the first computer-equipped school in Nepal, your childish Lego models, your nerf toy guns and whining about the lack of a "fun" workplace, your Everquest/Diablo/D&D fixation, the latest Cowboy Bebop rerun, or any of the other ways you are "getting on with your life" (here's a hint: watching Cowboy Bebop in your jammies and eating a bowl of Shreddies is *not* "getting on with your life"). The souls of the victims are watching in horror as you people squander your finite, precious time on this earth playing video games!
You people disgust me!
