Making Money In Open Source

Khalid writes "An interview with Sleepycat President and CEO, Michael Olson, it brings a lot of interesting information about their business model and licensing scheme. A lot of good ideas, when a lot of open source based companies are struggling for life. "

Reagan shelled the place after a suicide bomber drove a truck into a Marine barracks, killing something like 200 soldiers.

Then we left and less than 20 years later a bunch of suicide terrorist kill thousands in NYC, so we bomb Afganistan.

    We'll probably leave again.

This is how most of our economy is run.
You PAY people for their work and then you sell stuff they produce.
Hell, stop trying to "bend" GPL into something that it is not.
There is nothing wrong with charging people for your work.

Read, learn, you are not the first one to come up with "revolutionary" ideas ... There were thousands like you before, there were revolutions over this issue, yet we are still stuck with good old capitalism. That should tell you something.
What makes you think that RMS and his puny little theory ( his GPL is really nothing compared to intellectual giants like Marx ) will somehow shake and bend old laws of economy ?

    "Make money with your knowledge!"

If I write proprietary software and then sell it I definitely make money with my knowledge.
The difference is that nobody else who does not want to pay for my knowledge get to take advantage of my work.
How can that considered unfair is beyond me ...

Did you know that tomatoes are free? It's absolutely true. Anyone can grow tomatoes at virtually no expense. They are "worthless." What costs you money at the store isn't the tomato. It's the transportation and storage of the tomato, which is STILL so "worthless" that you find it preferable to buy it rather than grow your own. Zuccinni has NEGATIVE value. Sometimes you literally can't give it away.

No, that's not at all true. There are companies who have spent millions developing vegetables that grow faster, bigger, are bug and disease resistant, etc. Those are NOT free.
