Is it as good as I've heard some say? I don't trust many reviewers, unfortunately...
Basically, it's going to affect whether I buy a Mac or not - it's certainly a step up (on the Mac side) from my Doorst...I mean Mac Classic...

I frequent the FreeBSD mailing lists, and I have a large cluster of FreeBSD boxes powering the demanding computer applications my Fortune 500 employers demand, and it is the only operating system I have ever seen able to take the punishment my servers take on a daily basis. Jordan has practically abandoned the lists since joining Apple, and the discussions as a whole feel more hollow and less directional without his guidance. With the continuous slippage of FreeBSD 5.0's development, I fear for the future of my operating system. I can't help but feel that Jordan has abandoned his project to rot like BeOS and the Amiga.

It has recently come to my attention that the entire Slashdot crew engage in homosexual activities. CmdrTaco is one such person, and has dedicated his life to spreading the ideals of Taco-Snotting while enjoying the benefits of it. It has also come to my attention that CmdrTaco has other interests besides homosexuality (Believe it or not). One such interest includes a budding music career with a song titled "Gaping Anus". The details are sketchy on this topic but I do know that besides the lead vocals of CmdrTaco, it includes Timothy and CowboyNeal (Also members of the Slashdot crew). There has been no release date set for this album or which record label it will be produced under. I believe CmdrTaco is planning to set up his own label, Taco-Snotting Records, with the intention of releasing the song on a cd-single with various remixes as soon as possible (To catch the current popularity of the Taco-Snotting fad). On a side note, I would not believe this fad will ever wear out (like a Snotted-out-geek); I am sorry to say Taco-Snotting is here to stay
Through a good, non-homosexual friend of mine, I have recieved a copy of the lyrics to the Gaping Anus musical composition. Included after the lyrics is a very speical tribute written by yours truely. Perhaps CmdrTaco will ask me to provide the vocals. Does one token open-source project really make up for Apple's intense closed-mindedness? One need only look at their recent past to see that they are still up to their old schemes, what with the recent stink over Aqua-like themes and their continuing refusal to open the Sorensen codec, which powers nearly all the streaming media on the web. Darwin seems to me more like Apple trying to get a free ride by encouraging their users to develop their core operating system for them, while they reap the profits and keep their platform under an iron grip.
So the fact that I'm a successful consultant and software developer makes me a troll? I can only wonder what small-minded and petty living you make for yourself. Please, if you aren't going to come up with a thoughtful reply to my posts, don't bother posting until you can see beyond your parents' basement. Thank you.

I disagree entirely. Backing Apple just because they are the underdog is not good enough. Apple has to EARN our support by making sure that if we were to make them the #1 OS company over Microsoft et al, that they would not turn around and use this market power the same way Microsoft has to quash new ideas just because they compete. Unfortunately, Apple does not have a particularily gleaming history of support for either open standards or fair competition. If they want the market share they will have to earn it. In the meantime, I will continue to contribute my talents as a graphic artist to the various open source efforts underway now, none of which involve Apple.
I`m only interested in OS X if it is released for Intel processors. Apples hardware is far too expensive for what it does.

FreeBSD is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
OpenBSD leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of OpenBSD. How many users of NetBSD are there? Let's see. The number of OpenBSD versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 NetBSD users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of NetBSD posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put FreeBSD at about 80 percent of the *BSD market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 FreeBSD users. This is consistent with the number of FreeBSD Usenet posts.
Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, FreeBSD went out of business and was taken over by BSDI who sell another troubled OS. Now BSDI is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.
All major surveys show that *BSD has steadily declined in market share. *BSD is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If *BSD is to survive at all it will be among OS hobbyist dabblers. *BSD continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, *BSD is dead.

Let's stick to the facts instead of name calling. They have not opened their entire base, and they continue to punish anyone who would violate their "look and feel". If they had really opened everything up, every Linux distro would come with Quicktime, DVD recording software and many other Apple goodies. The choice of underlying OS is not the issue, it's all the extra effort they go through to protect their goofey little IP. If they took advantage of FreeBSD, fine. My preference is for OpenBSD, but so what? The idea is that they should just concentrate on what they think is so important, look, feel, backwards compatibility issues, and and not the rest of it.
Is it so absurd to think of them pooling their resources to make Debian or some specific BSD better? Why don't they tap into a nice pre existing user community instead of going it alone all the time? I mention Debian because it's distrobution method is superior.
Oh yeah, they might put their central reporting requirments where they put their termination clause.
