Where Can You Buy Refurbished Hardware, Now?

theGoodWitch writes "Since Egghead.com went bankrupt (that new 'powered by Amazon.com' site they have not is not the same thing), I'm having trouble finding good deals on used/refurbished/end-of-stock PCs, servers, hard drives, tape drives, and such. Ubid has some, but not nearly the selection. eBay has too much, and it's too hard to sort out who the sellers are. I don't want to buy from individuals, only from commercial suppliers with (at least limited) warranties and minimal guarantees. Egghead.com was perfect, but now they're gone. What happened to all the stuff they were getting? Who is selling it now?"

    eBay has too much

Whenever I'm looking for something, and I find it in mass quantities, I get really pissed too.

I'm not sure how to post this without getting it tagged as flamebait. I've had major problems with Computer Geeks, as have several friends and coworkers.

Rather than taking my word, ask around in your own office, put a query on a newsgroup or what have you. See what you hear.

That said, for older hardware, searching for specific item names on both pricewatch and shop.yahoo.com is usually your best bet. You can find virtually anything there, from super old hardware to "new" refurbished stuff.

I too have had some troubles with them. Getting a RMA number from them usually seems to take about a month and is just a lot more hassle than it should be.

On the other hand, I still do business with them because they have good prices, a good selections and tend to ship things promptly. If you purchased things from onsale.com/egghead.com a lot of them probably came from computergeeks. They were the supplier for a lot of the stock on the onsale.com auctions.

I remember buying from Egghead when they were "Surplus Software", they used to have the big black and white news paper type ads they'd mail you. They always had a page or two in Computer Shopper, also.

They used to sell LINUX distros, way back in the early 90's!

but don't forget the hyphen! :-) I've never personally dealt with them but members of the local unix community always had nice things to say about them (I mean, if anyone devours "old" hardware it's us freenix fans [for a while they had dual ppro 200s for like $149!]). Anyway, they ship so don't worry if you don't happen to live in the land of Shiner Bock, Sun-baked Hippies, and Crazed Germans (aka central Texas).
