Case Mods for G4 Towers
An anonymous user writes "I was surfin' around looking for a new case for PC I'm building and I cam across the MacSkinz site showing custom paint jobs for G4 towers. I think there's a certain irony in modding Apple products for appearance since that's so much part of the price in the first place. Gotta admit, they look sweet 'though."
"Dude, look at that radical paint job."
"Who cares dude, it's still a mac."
"Dude, it looks fast!"
"All macs look fast, dude"
"Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!"
"Wait, Dell makes Macs, right?"
If voting were effective, it would be illegal by now.
I'm an admitted Mac weasel from way back. I still have a Mac Classic II on my desk just for... *gulp* ... appearance. It's one of the coolest forms I've ever seen. Working on it is like listening to Bach; it makes me feel like I'm doing better work.
And I know that all sounds lame. I know it isn't true, but Shiva H. Vishnu, I love those machines so.
I would liken the case modding (from the line about design being a big part of the price) to customizing Harleys. They're overpriced and not popular because of performance (not dissin' the Harleys, mind you). People pay premium prices just so they can pay someone else premium prices to make their Harley unique. Kinda fitting that one flag case mod made me think immediately of Easy Rider.

I have often thought that those case mods are butt ugly. If I had a G4 tower in my kids' room I could imagine defacing it with something as gaudy as that, but there is a certain subtlety lacking from all the graphics they make available.
Why not decorate them up to maybe look a little more artistic, or at least tasteful? It seems to me that these are the brightest, most overstated graphics that could be used for this.
And it's a shame, because I think the idea of dressing up a G4 tower is really cool... the amazing part is that of the 30-ish designs available I can't tolerate even one of them.

And those Firewire ports. And that wireless hardware. And that composite video out. And the stock Nvidea card. And all those consumer apps. And...
Don't try to compare Apple hardware to bargin basement powersupply-cpu-harddrive boxes. There is no comparison.

Hrm, is this computer pr0n? ;-)

To the guy who modded me down from perfect to terrible Karma - Apple haters still suck
Epecially when you get a toms-hardware-esque explosion after fan removal. =P
As someone who routinely decks out any hardware they own (lets face it, the beige G3's needed it) I find it puzzling that someone would personalize a computer by buying a pre-painted case for it. Isn't the fun of modding your comp doing it youself to suit your tastes? I'd link pics of mine but I like my ISP.
Then again I also laugh at people buying alternative lifestyles from Hot Topic.

And I suppose you think that the people who designed the G4 case work for free. There are plenty of costs other than the materials.
My only political goal is to see to it that no political party achieves its goals.
The target market for this case 'skin' is someone who does alot of mods to their case. Not being able to open the case is not an option for a modder.

yes... you could say that.
