Alleged eBay Hacker Goofs up and Goes to Jail

juliao writes "SecurityFocus is reporting that alleged eBay hacker Jerome Heckenkamp was jailed after his first solo court appearance." It's pretty funny actually, stuff like challenging the indictment on the grounds that they typed his name in all capital letters, demanding to immediately testify (even tho they were only there to schedule the trial), threatening the judge and so on. He would know better if he watched a couple episodes of Law & Order. Note that I base all court proceedings on the wisdom of Sam Watterston.

"grammer"?? Consult the Underground Grammarian to see why it matters that a website devoted to complex technical subjects have the wit to use a spell-checker, or to find contributors who have read enough English to know the shape of common words. How many Slashdot readers would tolerate such sloppiness in their computer programs? Why then do they seem ashamed to condemn it in the language which communicates important technical developments?

I have to take a stab at the American public in general. Why is it that these guys cannot write English?! They all went to school for, what, at least 10-12 years right? Same as everybody else, right?

And for GOD's SAKE, English is the mother tongue for most Americans. This wouldn't annoy me quite so badly if it wasn't for the fact that I converse, in written form, with Italians, Germans, French, Danes, Finns, Swedes, Dutch, Japanese, etc on a daily basis - and on average their grasp on the English language, as a second tongue, is orders of magnitude better than your average American.

All I want to know is WHY?! WHAT causes that? SURELY there has to be a reason. I mean, did anybody read what tripe was written at the hackersdigest link? Come on guys, take some pride in your heritage. Speech, literature, and the freedom to use both as you see fit, is trampled upon by your lack of respect for your national language.

CmdrTaco, and the crew, the word "then" is SPECIFICALLY related to time, and often used as an adverb, a noun, or an adjective. Is is *NOT* to be used as the operative word in a comparison - the word you are usually looking for is the comparitive "thAn". See, the one with the A.

Just a little bit of attention to detail from the editors at this place would make a large difference.

It's a simple matter of respect. Respect your heritage, and respect your rights of free speech that has been handed to you on a silver platter. Otherwise, just fucking forget about intelligible literature and let's all turn into blathering, mumbling idiots with no concept of generally accepted standards for discourse.

Everybody makes grammatical and spelling mistakes, but most people at least learn to spot them at around the time they're in third grade. We're just lucky that most written languages contain enough redundant information to allow one to glean the meaning from a severely corrupt sentence.

Oh, and where was there ANY reference at all to intelligence, or the lack thereof? Sorry, YOU'RE reading words ("stupid") that aren't even there. I'm just asking for a reason why such atrocities against the English language occur, and at the moment I'm attributing it simply to a lack of respect; although, that's an optimistic view.

Our heritage is to olde English, and such, which had no fixed rules of grammar and spelling. Our forebearers with respect to the English language would find our current rules for grammar to be needlessly pedantic.

That's what really gets my goat. They get all high and mighty about resources, time, etc. costing money, so subscribe, but they can't even be bothered to fucking use ispell. Taco -- you're always blabbing on about Debian (rightly so, cos it rocks), so here's a tip: apt-get install ispell. Jesus Christ, it's not that hard. If you want me to pay for your site, I'm not even asking for you to research your articles for blatant falsehoods, I JUST WANT YOU TO SPELL CORRECTLY! It wasn't acceptable to not know how to spell in third grade, and it isn't now.

This is the second time this week that it has happened. Yesterday there was the "Internet Use Becomes More Purposful" headline. Which I have to say was fixed later in the day. I have to agree with you though. It would take about a minute or two to check the spelling of a posting. I'm talking about manually checking it!

Have you read CNN.com? Trust me, bad spelling is not an indicator that you're somewhere else. Nor are extremely ambiguous headlines, broken grammar, astounding insensitivity or carelessness of diction, etc.

CNN.com is my primary news source on the web because they cover the same stuff everyone else does, but they're funnier.

Amusing CNN.com lines I've noted recently:

Actually some time back I submitted a story to Slashdot postulating that spelling in general is declining at a rapid rate because we've become so tolerant of poor spelling (and spelling is by example so it propagates. Indeed, one of the most misspelled words these days is ridiculous, which by the network effect is now most commonly spelled as "rediculous"). I wish they posted it because I'm curious what others thought on the topic: Does poor spelling breed poor spelling? It is my belief that it certainly does.

If you're going to make a point about spelling it's definitely a good idea to make sure that yours is flawless.

Definitely would want to make sure that you're right. I wouldn't want to make a spelling mistake when busting someone on their spelling.

It's quite amazing. I watched the letters on the page morph into the correct spellings right before my eyes! They must be scanning these comments for the words "spell", "spelling error", etc.

I wish they had caught these mistakes before the story blurb was put on the front page -- it's damned embarrassing.

A good thing would be to tie a spell check to the 'preview' button so that posters (comment and story alike) could see if there is anything that needs to be fixed. Of course, the onus should be on the editors to fix these long before they make it live.

This is an abuse of the apostrophe, however, and ungrammatical in itself. The traditional indicator that you know something is wrong but are doing it anyway is (sic), as in

pronounciation (sic)

This applies to spelling and grammatical mistakes, and in general you'd only do it when quoting someone else.

Simply using words in odd senses doesn't need marking - it's either just creative or just illiterate, depending on what you meant and what was understood.

Making up your own version of English, however much sense it makes to you, isn't really a good idea, though. You can't "simply point out the apostrophe" because the apostrophe doesn't mean that to anyone else. A language is a set of shared conventions. As soon as you stop sharing, you stop being understood.
