Juanvaldes writes "Apple posts $40 million profit for the second quarter on revenues of 1.5 billion up 4% from this quarter last year..." I thought Apple was dead. Hm!

Revenues for the quarter were $1.5 billion, up 4 percent from the year ago quarter, and gross margins were 27.4 percent, compared to 26.9 percent in the year ago quarter.
Hah!

I'm not a finance guy (go figure posting to slashdot...) so are gross margins how much they mark up the price of their product over cost?

Don't forget that gross margins are not evenly distributed across all products.
In other words, the margin on an iMac (targeted at more price-sensitive consumers) is probably way, way less than that of a TiBook. So keep that in mind.

Naw. Gross margins are the difference between net (absolute total) sales and cost of goods sold. What's more interesting about this is that gross margins are higher, which is good, revenue is higher (which is also good), but then earnings per share is down (arguably bad). So Apple the company seems to be doing good (w/ 4.3 billion in CA$H), but it wouldn't seem to be a great investment. Unless, of course, you bought it 10 years ago.

Economy or Jobs?

So, is this an indicator that the economy has turned around, and people are willing to spend hard earned cash on a good computer system? Or is it the masterful leadership of Jobs that has turned this computer company around?
Although I do think the economy is playing a part in this, I think that it is more the strong leadership of Jobs who has been able to deliver on the hype, and who has focused the creative talents of his employees to produce an excellent operating system, and some cool looking computers and computing devices.

Still I agree with you, I don't think it's the economy picking back up. (Actually, it's not so much picked up as bottomed out, but I digress...) Apple's been turning in decent quarterly results since the downturn started. They must be doing something right.

Supposing AAPL earns $0.60/share for the fiscal year ending in September, the stock is trading at 41 times forward earnings. Moreover, I don't see how they can grow more than 20% or so per year, so the stock relatively little upside from here.
Yes, I think Apple makes great products; and I may buy one later this year. The stock, however, is fully valued.

Given the 'reported' problems with the importing the new iMacs and that the units only seem to have been shipping in large quantities in the last month or so, I think this is amazingly good news. With the new 10G iPod and the ability to ship iMacs at rate, I suspect Q2 is going to be prettty damn amazing for apple.
Remember folks, almost every other home computer company is really struggling to make numbers these days. Apple made them with production problems.
