GPL's Strength

Morty writes "So, why hasn't the GPL been successfully challenged yet? In this article, Eben Moglen, General Counsel to the FSF, explains that the GPL is in a stronger legal position than most licenses. Most licenses restrict the user from doing what would otherwise be legal. Because the GPL (and presumably, other free/open software licenses) let the user do things that are otherwise illegal (copy and redistribute software), the GPL is in a stronger position to dictate terms. If the user doesn't accept the terms of the GPL, the default is for copying and redistribution to be forbidden under copyright law. I had never looked at it that way before. . ."

Yup, Micro$$$oft0rZ is proven wrong, because the counsel of the FSF said so. And as we know, it is *actually impossible* for lawyers to be biased, wrong or untruthful. Time and time again we hear of people's cases being thrown out because the lawyer stands up and announces 'Your Honour, I have decided that my client does not have a case, so will save time by announcing it now.'

Perhaps my mathematical outlook on life gives me a different definition of the word 'proof'.

Myriad media exist for guys to get a firm grip on their sex lives when there's nobody else around. But, even at a time when surveys show that about 60 percent of girls have a daily diddle, it largely remains a mystery about what women use as aids for masturbation. Spa! (4/23) tries to put a finger on the answer to how birds bring themselves over the brink.
It seems to be a matter for the mind, with 80 percent of 108 women in their 20s and 30s saying they use their imagination when seeking self relief.

    Some fantasize about actual experiences.

"All I need to do is remember what it feels like when my older lover performs orally on me, bringing me to the edge, but never over it," a 24-year-old woman says.

Others prefer to dream of dalliances with superstars, but revulsion also played a surprisingly prominent role.

"I get off on dreaming about being forced to do it with really awful guys," a 28-year-old housewife tells Spa!

Nonconsensual sex also seems to appeal to women who like watching movies while they masturbate.

"More than any other genre, women seem to prefer movies with lesbian sex or rape scenes," Ms. Hagiwara, proprietor of a Tokyo adult shop for women, tells Spa! "With the lesbian movies, the most popular ones feature scenes where a more experienced woman initiates a younger partner into a new world.

"As for the rape movies, the guy absolutely has to be a hunk. When you imagine a rape scene while masturbating, it doesn't matter so much if the guy is awful, but you can't get away with that on video. If he's a dud instead of a dude, it becomes too real and horrifying. And the story has to have something good come out of the nonconsensual sex. Women feel good if they're roughed up by a guy who falls in love with them in the end."

But Hagiwara warns that simply because women may fantasize about violent romps, that doesn't mean they actually want them.

"Women only want rape fantasies," she says. "It's the same sort of feeling as people who like war movies, but would never want to experience the horrors of war."

Other popular mediums for girls to get off on are the ubiquitous comics found everywhere in Japan. Even then, the forcible fantasy image remains strong.

"Our most popular stories are the ones where a good-looking young man makes unceasing demands on an older woman until she finally relents and gives in to him," says Masafumi Mizuno, editor in chief of Amour, a comic book known for its graphic depictions of steamy women in the throes of ecstasy.

Erotica, particularly on the Internet, also seems to get female fingers fetching for a fiddle.

"Make no mistake, more women read online erotica than men. Women read all the erotic novels serialized in men's weeklies or afternoon tabloids," Madam, who writes about female sexual freedom, tells Spa! "They read the stories for a while and find themselves getting into the mood."

Although, if you decide you won't use any of the additional rights the GPL grants, are you still bound by it if you, say, bought a RedHat package full of GNU software? You're paying to use it, right?

The GPL doesn't restrict your use of the software. So you are free to use the software whether you agree with the GPL or not. It is only when you distribute GPLed code that you agree to be bound by its terms.
