How is it for IBM PowerPC systems? I'm using Suse right now on my RS/6000, but I'm willing to give Mandrake a try if it supports the platform.

I believe {perhaps erroneously] that it does support all PowerPC architecture, including IBM's... I think that YellowDog 2.2 does...

Not if you are a Linux/Apple owner with a G4! Why would they have G3 optimizations rather than G4 optimizations? I was under the opinion that the G3 was *very* similar to a PowerPC chip. The G4 is the chip that has the extra stuff added that might be *optimized* for.

Also, does this support my TiBook 667? Most Linux distro's do not support the newer TiBook's Radeon Video card. I've heard of many headache's from people who have funky resolutions and what not since the card is not supported.

Please answer my questions!!

Because there is already a (better IMHO) nix that runs optimized on the G4. Linux on G3s is great....If you have a G4, use OS X. You will not be disapointed.

I'm sure I've read that it does, although I can't find a link to prove it. It has the 2.4.18 kernel and XFree 4.2 so it certainly should work. (Same for YDL 2.2.)

I was disappointed. I got OSX because it is a BSD but whatever they shipped me failed to include a c compiler so one of the first things I had to do when i got my powerbook g4 was install linux on it. That was my first exposure to mandrake (8.0) and it was very positive.

I know there are developer tools available with osx - apparently they should have included the CD with devtools when I bought the powerbook. I didnt get them. Then I had to order an OS upgrade (10.0.4 to 10.1 for $25 - I couldnt get the "free" upgrade anywhere nearby). Then I could finally download the devtools.

Unfortunately for Apple by that time I had a beautiful system with mandrake 8.0, an apache 2.0 beta, a mysql compiled from source and a whole test environment that I can work with anywhere on the planet and that shows what a great processor the G4 is.

I must say OSX is a wonderful OS when you compare it to windows, but it doesn't come close to a BSD or GNU/Linux running a suite of development applications under X. So much depends on what you want the os to do. Maybe I am also one in a long line of new apple customers that isnt used to paying for a lot of software, is used to tweaking the OS, and is making assumptions about installed software and OS requirements that are novel to Apple.

Now I am running MDK 8.2ppc beta on the powerbook and I can most definitely recommend MDK 8.2 on ppc. And I hope apple will port OSX to intel!!

Okay, first of all, I'm having trouble registering.

That said:

I just got a Quicksilver 800mhz PowerPC - dev tools came with the OS, and can be downloaded. Even compiled a version of Mozilla for Darwin on it.

Tried to install YellowDog - wouldn't install. Often came back with fatal errors in text mode. Graphical install mode wouldn't work at all. Downloading Mandrake now, if it *works* on my G4, I'll support it.

I've got a powerbook g4 450 - got it in summer of last year. Glad to hear you got the dev tools cd.

I run the MDK 8.2 installer here with the aty128fb - thats for the ATI Mach 64 Mobility M3, you might have more recent video hardware in yours and I would strongly suggest checking out mandrakeforum.com to see what they have to say about it.

MDK 8.2 works very well on this powerbook - if it doesnt work at first please see if there are any known issues and/or workarounds having to do with the vid subsystem, it's very much worth it to have a dual boot osx/mdk8.2.

But remember, not only is it good to exercise choice - it's also good to encourage the proliferation of choice. (Huh?)

If you like Mandrake's work at providing a feature-rich Linux distro for the Mac, be sure to give 'em some money (ie, consider buying some CDs) so they'll see reason to keep up the excellent work!

Definatly, even though we love the word free, and open, time is not free or open, so please try to give something back to your favorite distro.

This is awesome, great to see how linux is moving in on MS from every angle, however, now we have to think about, if Linux on the MAC picks up, what will be Apples response to this? Will they back off their "open" architecute and go around the world giving speeches about how open is bad and "unamerican"?

Apple makes the lion's share of their profits from selling hardware, not software, so additional operating system choices only increase the number of potential customers.

The only way it could negatively impact Apple's bottom line is by lengthening the upgrade cycle; a useable Linux system is less resource-intensive than a tricked-out OSX system, thus keeping "older" Macs in use longer rather than requiring the users to buy new hardware. Even then, one could argue that those "older Mac" users are people who wouldn't have the money for a newer system anyways - so it simply increases the number of Macs in use.

On second thought, an exceptionally strong Linux presence on Mac might pull some open source development muscle away from OS X development. But that kind of impact would be several years in the making...

Seems this still ships with kde 2.2.2 or what have you unless I'm missing something here. (in which case ignore the rest of this) Why not 3? This is the latest ppc-linux release it should have the latest packages. Speaking of which has anybody actually been able to setup kde 3 on ydl 2.2? Been having the damndest time getting kde to run on ppc.

It's the PPC version of Mandrakes i586 release, which came out before KDE3 had it's final release. Mandrake may like the leading edge, but not the bleeding edge. It wasn't stable enough and they weren't prepared to wait. KDE3 is available for download, but still has a few packaging bugs to be shaken out.

Next version will be good: KDE3, Gnome 2, GCC 3.1, LSB compliant.

same here.... having trouble getting YDL 2.2 to install on an old 7200, bought some more and ordered CDs. maybe that will help. Put MkLinux on it in the meantime., fun fun fun

KDE3 and Yellowdog

I'm on my Ibook 500mhz running Yellowdog 2.2 in Konquerer 3.0.0 .... I didn't have any problems with doing a quick:
rpm -e `rpm -qa |egrep ^kde` --force --nodeps
and then from the kde3 download dir:
rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps *rpm

Starts right up without an issue

Good grief! I seriously mean no disrespect to you or to the good people at Yellow Dog or KDE...but the above quote truly exemplifies why Linux doesn't have any desktop presence to speak of. I myself installed YDL on my TiBook last weekend and was seriously shocked at how ...rudimentary..the installation, configuration and UI (KDE and Gnome) was. My hat is off to the hardworking Linux developers. I believe in what they're doing. But I am desperatlely hoping that they grab the holy grail of consumer usability sometime soon. I can tell you they're not there yet.

It seems that lots of people on slashdot think that YelloDog and LinuxPPC (and now mandrake) are the only PPC distors available. Dont forget: Debian runs on PPC, and it's good.

With Fink, OSX gets one of the neat features of Debian, apt-get.

I have been thinking of trying Debian, but right now YellowDog 2.2 is what I am using and I love it.

Mandrake was ok, but seemed rather slow and missing some tools I like. Actually Mandrake is more than OK, I'd say you should make room for both Mandrake and YDL. bTW, YUP is not much different from apt-get. I haven't explored enough to see if it is just a frontend.

Since then, I have been running SuSE on a Wall Street powerbook, a Cube and G4 tower. All steady as a rock. Had a minor prob with the default install not finding the cdrom w/7.3, but email support replied quickly regarding "scsi emulation" for IDE drives ( go figure) and it all works fine. Burns CDR's too.

I almost loaded up Mandrake before the SuSE 7.3 came out, and the SuSE works so well, I punted on the Mandrake, but I am sure it's fine.

I'd actually like to try the latest Mandrake on intel hardware, but I just can't part with money for intel hardware!

Say, doesn't Deb run on old 6100-style PPC boxes, ( and performa upgraded to PPC) and how about my old 68030 2CX? Do I need to run Mklinux on them? I'd like to put them back into service.

Don't forget that Gentoo Linux runs on PPC. Gentoo is an excellent, modern Linux distribution with a package system similar to portage. It has been reviewed a few times on /. and is quickly gaining popularity.

Well does it? Does this Distro and anyother PPC distros run on other PPC boards, such as the TerronCX or the new ATC PPC mobo from Eyetech (which is similar or the same)?

Or, do these just run on Macs. Shouldnt linux distros like Mandrak, Gentoo (i see someone said up there) Yello Dog and others all make strides to get their OS working on open, non propietry PPC hardware? So that it might be possible to bring down prices?

I read somewhere that most existing PPC Linux distros do not work with the New iMac's as they make use of the Nvidia chipset to drive the display....is that still the case? Is there a good URL for info on running a Multi-Boot iMac with OS X, OS 9, and 1 or more Linux(es) side by side??
