New Preview of Neverwinter Nights

H3resy wrote to us with a new preview of Neverwinter Nights. The game continues to look great - and combined with its release date being right around Warcraft III, I suspect sleep will not be an option.

Podunk, Idaho (Reuters) Slashdot readers around the world have taken notice to the tragic decline of the once entertaining and enlightening website, SLASHDOT.ORG.

"The fact of the matter is that I just don't feel up to the job anymore," CmdrTaco said, on condition of anonymity.

"I used to wake up in the morning and be realy excited about the days work. I'd hop out of bed and put on my leather bondage get-up, and prepare to render the day's submissions into submission. But I lost the leather mask, and the rest of the outfit just doesn't work without it.

"I have this old bull whip, and after every anti-microsoft submission that was accepted, I would yell 'Who's Yo Daddy!' while cracking the whip. Sometimes during these celebratory episodes I'd even run around with a broom between my legs, pretending it was a horse.

"But without the outfit and mask, the whip isn't as exciting, the broom is just a broom, and I just can't do it anymore. Now I just accept the first submission on the list, and don't bother reading it."

    1. Why do people feel the need to be such losers and post about how much slashdot sucks? Really, I would like to know. If you don't like it leave, rather than mindlessly ranting and wasting everyones time. Dumb.

    2. Dont like the ads? There is another option... payment you cheap bastards... if it is that important to your small minds, do something about it other than complaining. I have yet to see anything valuable accomplished by complaining. If you can think of a better way for slashdot to pay its bills, you should tell them. Or leave.

That's right! Vivendi, the company that owns the company that owns the company that owns Blizard, the DCMA terrorists themselves, the company that took out napster, the company that is a major part of BOTH the MPAA and RIAA has their shareholder meeting "hacked." In that meeting, the shareholders voted down options compensation for senior management, but the hack means they get to do the vote over.

  6. Another Miserable Year For Linux by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

This year was supposed to be the year that Linux crushed Microsoft. Free Software and Open Source Software, now finally being accepted by some businesses, were supposed to stand in the spotlight as all focused their attention on the young challenger. Even in the third month of 2002 though, it is plainly obvious that this year, will not be the year for Linux.

Although I mainly use Microsoft Windows XP, I do occasionally return to Linux because of curiosity. Recently, I visited a few Linux advocacy forum in hopes of seeing news of the release of KDE 3.0 and GNOME 2.0, two graphical user interfaces that hope to make Windows obsolete. GNOME 2.0 has been in development for over two years and KDE has always had rapid development, so I was surprised to see that both were not nearly ready for release, especially considering the fact that the changes made in the upgrades are very trivial. Sadly, the development of both GNOME 2.0 and KDE 3.0 has slowed to a halt due to the lack of organization that is constantly seen with Free Software. Although the current versions of both are viable competitors to Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and above are more stable and preferred by an overwhelming majority of users who have experienced both sides.

KDE and GNOME aren't only applications repelling people from Free Software though. The lack of games also keeps Linux being a viable competitor a ridiculously idealistic dream. Although Free Software hackers have been able to create usable clones of Photoshop and Microsoft Office, the lack of innovation and artistry in the Free Software community has resulted in Linux having only poor games such as Tux Racer and Minesweeper. Realizing that Free Software communities were unable to create quality games, Loki, a company with the purpose of promoting the superiority of Free Software by porting superior commercial software to Linux, was formed. In the beginning, Loki had financial problems, but was able to function for the dozens of customers they had. In time, they fell into bankruptcy, but promised the Linux community that they would not die. A few months later, Loki went out of business. Now Free Software advocates, who are also avid game players, realize they must use the operating system that enrages them to feed their gaming addiction, or must stick with Tux Racer.

Linux game companies aren't the only Open Source companies floundering. Mandrake is singing its swan song, desperately pleading for money after realizing that selling t-shirts doesn't make a good business model. Having purchased many boxes of Mandrake Linux, I am appalled at how Mandrake still feels I'm obligated to give more money to them, let alone anybody else on a product that is free. Microsoft has never acted as if consumers were selfish and heartless for not giving them money after freely using free products such as Internet Explorer. It is expected that in a few months, Mandrake and their business model of selling t-shirts and asking for donations will be out of business.

Besides companies going out of business, others are abandoning Open Source software. Once a supporter of Open Source, Sun has realized that it isn't profitable and businesses won't use it when able to afford products of higher quality such as Microsoft Office, and will now charge for StarOffice, believing that people will believe the product is better if Sun charges for its inferior Microsoft Office clone.

With the death of more Linux companies, the discovery of more flaws in a supposedly flawless operating system, a new lack of confidence in Free Software and Open Source Software, and a stronger commitment to develop quality products by Microsoft, there are even less reasons to use Linux now than there were before. Only when Open Source advocates realize that with order, innovation, and work come quality software, and not childish mascots and propaganda of pasting penguins on pictures of beautiful women, will they have a chance to rival other operating systems such as BeOS, MacOS, much less than undisputed champion, Microsoft Windows.

It's only single player, but given the joys of many multiplayer rpgs [diabloii.net], that's probably a good thing.
