SonicBlue Ordered to Spy on ReplayTV Viewers

An Anonymous Coward writes: "Got outrage? According to a story on SiliconValley.com, a federal magistrate has ordered SonicBlue to track ReplayTV users' every click to see what they're watching, recording, skipping (commercials) and e-mailing to friends. The info is to be given to the entertainment industry control freaks who are suing SonicBlue for allegedly abetting copyright violations."

I don't want to be modded as Flamebait, but I have a real example of how microsoft is not that bad, and I hope this can spark an intelligent discussion about my valid points (valid b/c they are based on expierence).

It does not make sense to me why linux receives all of the die-hard praise that it does. I was willing to go on the linix bandwagon i excitedly bought Corel Linux Delux with Wordperfect for 79.99 at CompUSA, and I was ready to join the open source revoultion, this is where my problems began.

The installation was brutal, it took me 3-6 hours to get LILO to work, and even then it did not auto-detect any of my hardware. I was forced to look at 640X480 resoultion on my $199.99 Voodoo3 while in Win98 I was using 1024X68. My problems were further compounded by the fact that my modem was not detected. Someone told me that winmodems do not work, so I spent 129.99 on a US Robitics 56K and realized that the AOL's cd does not work with Linux. I called AOL to have them send me a Linux version and after dealing with their computer illeterate reps they told me a Linux version was not available (they did not even know what linux was!!!). My friend helped me out and let me get access to his dialup account from a local provider, I managed to get connected. Corel does not bundle Internet Explorer with Linux so I had to resort to an OOLLLDD version of netscape. I never realized how much I appreciated true type Microsoft fonts until looking at this thing, it was unreadable! I was willing to bear with this, but then the lame copy of Word Perfect that comes with it did not read any of my important documents, everything looked all messed up. Also, I could not print. When I tried to add a printer to Linux there was maybe 5 choices, I tried them all, but I got nothing by garbage to print out (smiley faces, harts, and other messed up characters) $300.00 laser printer down the drain.

With microsoft I have none of these problems happen. The hardware is transparent to me . . . I was out this $$

    Linux 79.99
    Printer 300.00
    Modem 129.99
    Voodoo3 199.99
potentail new dial up (replace AOL): approx 19.95 a month

    versuses;

A new copy of Win 200 XP; 199.99

My other gripe with this was that I had to actually "buy" a copy of this software. Doesn't open source mean "free to all"? I realize that the point of OSDN is to get the software out to people for free, but how are we supposed to get it without "paying" some company like Corel . . . if I have to pay Corel, to use their OS, than how different are they from microsoft, how can Corel honestly sell something to me that was developed Open Source, they did not code Linux, that is like me downloading copies of it, burning it on a CD and selling it for 79.99? Yeah, people have said that it is free because yiou can download it from their web site, but how am I going to do that without an OS to begin with? It is kind of the chicken or the egg problem all over again, what am I going to download it with . . . ossmosis? So in some sense, I just don't see the difference between Microsoft and Red Hat and Corel, they both need me to pay them for their software, making the concept of information being free to all a farce.

Microsoft made a standard, and it prevented me from the hassles of Linux and hardware, maybe the OSDN should work on Plug and Play in the OS, then it would be more accessable to the average user, I consider my self pretty savvy as far as computer users go, so if I can;t get it working how is the average joe?

How do you expect people to release themselves from the grip of microsoft when we are all too "dumb" to do it ourselves (or so you say). That is why it will never be accepted! I shouldn't have to "know what I get into", if it is too COMPLEX for me than what other choice do I have than to use the ease of Windows.

Also I know I am not too stupid. I am a network admin for a pretty large company in Ohio, I have a few years with Windows, and I thought it would be nice to learn Linux

Also I know for a fact that Corel and Red Hat or any other distro of Linux are ALL THE SAME ANYWAY! It is free open source, they just slap their logo on it!

There are soooo many ways that you can get Linux without paying a single dime to anyone other than those who provide you the facilities to burn the CD. You can go to an internet cafe; if you're a student, you can probably use the school's internet connection; you can maybe even go to a friend's house, who may already have Linux; or, probably the best idea of them all, find a local Linux user's group. Heck, you may even find someone there that will up and give you a CD for free. You claim to be computer savvy, but the most knowledgable people are those that regularly push themselves outside of their comfort zone, exploring what they don't already know, and, god forbid, it may mean that they'd have to do some actual research. By your own admission, you were unwilling to take those extra steps. That's why other responders to this thread are saying you are stupid.

Before you go off with your elitist attitude towards this poor guy, maybe *you* should know what you are getting into. Myself, I use both unix and windows and know quite a bit about both.

Have you actually used windows plug and play lately? Since, say windows 2000 maybe? As much as I am pro open source and pro unix, I don't think anyone who knows even a bit about what their talking about can seriously say that linux is anywhere remotely close to windows plug and play. Never mind being equal. Most devices *just work* in windows. They may not by default get the latest drivers, and the newest hardware may require a driver disk, but compared to linux even installing a driver manually (which no company requires a user to do) is easy.

If your going to be a hotshot please be an informed hotshot. This guy's points are completly valid for an average to moderatly advanced computer user out there. I think people who live and breath computers can get a little detached from reality sometimes.

I'm glad somebody else said this. Every time I say it I get modded down. Believe it or not, there are things that MS does right. If some people were to look at what MS is doing right and get Linux doing it just as well, then you'll find that Linux is a much stronger Windows contender. \

There's a lot more value to having your computer 'just plain work' than most of the Linux zealots out there realize. Make Linux as easy as Windows for installing drivers and troubleshooting problems, and I just may switch to it.
