It has been a wild ride, but like all great adventures this must come to an end. This machine will be the end of Apple.
They are already starting to have production problems. What good is a machine that is hyped, but nobody can even get it. There are extensive backorders until December, and even those are in question dure to the low yields that the CPU is gettin in the manufacturing plants.
Also Jaguar has been a abysmal failure. Jobs chose to alienate his user base by making almost 90% of the software obsolete with this new release. People have been turned off by the constant bugs and revisions to this software.
Talk about alienating user bases; what is Joe Schmo supposed to think with his brand new G4 he just got for 4K? A new platform that makes his look obsolete? At leat AMD and Intel still support their previous chips, what are we supposed to do with all of those nice Apple vanity mirrors we have purchased?
Face it, X86 is an inevitability. Apple as we know it is dead.

Those data centers have nothing to worry about. Some company is going to buy all of that infrastructure & equipment for pennies on the dollar. It makes sense for them to leave it as is and transfer the existing customer base. Why would they reinvent the wheel if everything is already in place? No need to panic.
Running games on Linux is exactly like one thing. Living in 97'. Looking at the blog boards and the rest of slashdot you would think that Linux ruled the universe of the OS. I think not. There are two things that drive a platform. Sex and Games.
Now the sex part is covered as web browsers, newsgroup readers, FTP services are pretty standard across the board now and provided the basic pud pulling requirement of any proper geek.
The one thing that's missing is games. Like, COME ON! Nobody don't gives a shit about MUDDING, or MOOing, or playing that linux port of Quake 3. When all the "new" full price linux titles are basically in the bargain bin at Kmart, being traded for a cold pint or used as coasters for sayd cold pint.
It's mind boggling. I watch these MORON's talk about running their GeForce 4 under linux, as do I (Dual boot Win2k and SUSE 8.0 beside the Xserve running right next to the Ultra Sparc 10). But you know what?
What the hell does it matter if your x Environment is refreshed with a GeForce 4. Realistically all that's needed is a crappy Rage Pro to do what needs to be done under x (KDE or GNOME). Even then the drivers they are running are voodoo3 drivers that have been tweaked a bit you're not squeezing a drop more out of the hardware except by the physical processor. It's like putting a porche engine into a Toyota Echo fer fuck'sake.
No wonder almost every linux bigot I know owns AT LEAST one console (N64, PS2), really now, if their OS had any balls it would be able to use the hardware properly and at least have more than the modern day equivalent of "pong" for something to do.
Because really now, who the hell really needs to play with Apache or Samba that much:
"OOOO , look...another webpage...OOOO...look! I mapped a drive to the Sun server."
YaWN! You know why there are no games for linux, it's because their owners have no skill and much like the Acedemia that produced it, it continues to live in an unseen ivory tower.
Again the Linux community proves that they are nothing but two bit theives!
Apple is no different than Microsoft with their closed source software. In this, case Apple has closed source hardware. It is not meant to run anything other than what they have designed for it. Fact is, if you try to install a free (stolen) operating system on closed source hardware...YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW!
This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that all of the unshowered zit faced Linux users will stop at nothing in their quest to install Linux on Everything.
What started with the dreamcast, PS2,Xbox and now the Apple hardware is now getting out of control. Please, can any of you explain to me WHY anyone would want to install Linux on a Mac? That is like me going and stuffing a flaming stick up my ass. Just because I can, doesn't mean that it should be done.
You Herbs. Seriously why would you want to combine the WORST of both worlds into one craptacular package with Apple (hardware) and Linux (software).
I also thought that Linux was all about the anti-establishment (communist) movement. Isn't the Apple the prime example of this? They actually make you pay for MP3s! Would you then suck off Steve Jobs if he launched iP0rn?
You guys make a mockery of yourselves with each passing moment.
I know. I hear that if you use excessive force in trying to stop a burglar (i.e. mudering him with a base ball bat), you can get charged with manslaughter. I think once you enter someone's home uninvited . . . all bets are off.
The war between ATI and NVIDIA is hardly intersting anymore. NVIDIA has clearly been the second place GPU maker since the 9700 pro came out last year. They have been playing catch-up ever since.
Maybe they should have not bought 3dfx's assets . ..too many parallels.
I think it is a curse that has to do with late product cycles.
Also the ridiculousness of the Geforce FX jet engine cooling system is only trunped by the ill fated Voodoo 5 5500's 4 GPU design that was the size of today's ITX motherboards.
Wait until you see the first court case of a failed rapist suing the woman & jacket maker for millions dollars over the physical damage and mental anguish it caused him in his botched rape attempt. Trust me if this thing goes mainstream it will happen.
Also, why is this only for women? Do they think that men don't get jacked up by criminals too?
I saw the bankruptcy assets of Naptser last year. They had more data storage up for grabs than I had ever seen. We are talking hundreds of Terabytes!
Wasn't the whole legal arguement of Napster being that it was somewhat peer to peer? If Napster was not actually storing the data on their site, why did they need all of that storage?
What a waste of an education. They will get out in the real world thinking they know how to use a 'computer', when in reality they do not know how to use jack sh*t.
Spam cannot be destroyed. Spam is like AIDS, everytime we try to come up with an effective way to combat it, it mutates into another form and renders the previous mutation's antibody a moot point.
We just have to accept the fact that we have lost the war with Spam and learn to live with it in our daily lives. I have, and am a lot better for it;
I have learned over 400 ways to refinance my house, increased my penis size by 5 times, heard from lots of hot slutty girls that want to hang out with me, Cured my erectile dysfunction disorder, saved money on Norton Antivirus, and will become a millionaire once I mail out the five letters stuffed with a dollor and my name at the bottom of the list.
There is a lot of good information out there that I have benefitted from and I did not even have to leave to my house! I even forward all of the good opportunities I receive to all of my family and friends.
Why not just get a PC if you need to play these games so badly? Obviously there is no support for gaming on the Mac platform and there never will be.
You can build/buy a pretty decent PC setup for $1000 or so that will run most/all current games and you do not have to wait 6 months to play a slower version of the same title. There is no reasonable complaint that MAC users can give as to the crappy game support. It was never there in the past, so why would it be there now? It is a dead issue. I think we need to move on.
As a long time reader of the Hulk comics, this trailer makes me feel a lot better. As a kid I could never get into the TV show because visually it was nothing like the comic book. The Hulk was all about size and power, and back then it just was not possible.
Someone mentioned the leaping was unrealistic. In the comic the Hulk could leap like a mofo.
Does anyone know the classic David Keown rendering of the Hulk in the early 90's? He was FREAKING HUGE. That is how a comic book hero should be. This is how the Hulk was originally imagined to be . . . SUPPOSED to be.
You guys can keep your TV show. I'm on board for this. If you ever read the comics this IS the Hulk, visually the TV show was just a cheap imitation.
Go back to the days of Windows 95 & 98. That is when Microsoft really grabbed hold of the marketplace. Later on when they had a stronger hold on the market they started to backtrack, doing stuff like you mentioned.
If you got the OS packed with the PC you purchased, the cost was well figured in... you didn't see the exact price so you figure it's free, huh?
Yes, I figure that it is free, and so do the millions of people that have bought a Dell, Compaq, HP over the past few years. Like it or not, MS Windows is a given when you buy.
If you got it off a buddy, you're a thief... you don't see the cost that is being passed onto people who actually pay for their software because of theives.
I think that is pretty presumptious statement. I am not making any claims as to what I or anyone else does (my copies of Windows have all come with the PCs I bought), I am just stating the obvious. I guess taken literally, it is true. However, I gues that makes for A LOT of theives. I may not agree with Microsoft's tatics, but can you really say with a straight face that Microsoft did not benefit from the fact that it was so damn easy to take a buddy's CD and install Windows onto your machine? It allowed them to penetrate into the market and get the OS on as many desktops as possible. Once they had everyone locked in, they backtracked and started enforcing protection (Windows XP activation).
It's not a *little* cost, and it's not an *option*... you pay for it, whether you take the OS or not. With linux, you don't have to pay for it, you have an *option* and you are *free* to compute how you feel.
But you are not free to install the thousands of appplications out there, because NOBODY runs Linux, and very little commercial software is written for it because of this fact.
Linux is facing an uphill battle because it's not as easy for the average joe to operate. If you think for a second that people are selecting Windows willingly because it costs more and is harder to use, but hey, it's included, I think you'll find you're mistaken.
If my grandma bought her EMachine with Linux installed complete with an Linux version of AOL, she would be using that instead.
I am tired of hearing the same arguements about how people will go to Linux because it is "cheaper" or "free" when compared with Windows.
People don't realize that MS Windows has been "free" for years. I am sure that MS did this intentionally, but how many people have actually gone to the store and paid for a copy of any flavor of Windows since Windows 98 came out? People got the OS because It is either packed into the PC they bought or they got it from a buddy whose PC came packed in with it (copy protection was non-existant before Windows XP).
When you buy a new Dell, WinXP Home is a default option that adds little to the final price to the PC. This is why Linux is facing an uphill battle. It has nothing to do with Interfaces, command lines , or GUIs.
now-dormant Leaves worms await instructions from their master. Should they ever again awaken, a posse will be waiting.
Seriously, this sounds like text/dialog from a really bad Sci-Fi novel/movie. Invasion of the Body Snatchers 3 : The Leaves
When the leaves awaken, they will take over the host and taker over the host forming one big network of conscienceness that will not stop until world domination is acheived!
That was an ignorant statement, I am willing to bet that you have never owned an Emachine. The IT department that I work for has a very STRICT budget, so when we needed to buy 30-40 PCs for our expansion 2 1/2 - 3 years ago we bought EMachines.
We never shut the workstations down and most of them have been running rock solid the entire time. Sure two or three have had dead power supplies, but I am sure that would be the case with any brand bought in such mass quanities. And even if we have to buy an extra power supply, the value is still there.
There is a market for these things and they serve that market well. Not every company is a Fortune 500 company that can afford to buy new P4 Dells with 17 inch flat panel monitors every 6 months.
How many more generations of PowerMacs are going to come out before the long awaited MAC with an AMD processor? 1.3 ghz will look like a sweaty sack of balls! I know that there are development kits out there already! After that, how long before we can buy MacOSX for x86?
