5.2 Earthquake Shakes Up SF Bay Area

Joe Kaz wrote in (along with a number of other concerned folks): "There was a 5.2 Earthquake in Gilroy, CA, 70 miles south of San Francisco. The epicenter was 4.7 miles below surface. It lasted for about 10 seconds, and it did seem like a long time. Everything shook for a while, and it was a little scary. No reports of damage yet. Hope everyone is ok." I've got a report from my sisters father-in-law in gilroy (the epicenter) and he barely noticed it. Nate Oostendorp noted that "My stereo shook a little" in Walnut Creek. The SF Gate story on the quake notes that there are some phones out in some small parts of San Jose. The usgs has an event monitoring page if you are interested.

    Kinda OT, but not really.

A few years ago, I was in the family room playing Doom with a friend. One of the computers was hooked up to the stereo, and it was turned up pretty loud. So we're playing away, and the phone rings. It was another friend, who had been on his way over to join us, and had turned around and gone back home. He said something about an explosion, and we hadn't heard it. Well, we probably did, we just thought it was in the game. It turned out a guy blew up his own house for the insurance money. For those who know the East end of Scarborough, ON, the explosion was at Port Union and the 401, and I was at Pt. Union and Lawrence.

I'd rather have earthquakes, though, than tornados, blizzards, or hurricanes.

What's wrong with blizzards? (apart from their DMCA stuff...) Blizzards rock, period. Start a fire, be snowed in, playing games all day. It's the life, man.

....you guys are friggin idiots - leaning more and more towards mainstream media in a pathetic attempt to gather more traffic to a once great site. Events like 9/11 and plane disasters I can understand as they are major tragedies, but a measely little earthquake is not deserving of a post on slashdot. That's what cnn.com and news sites are for. Please stick to what made this site unique and worth visiting in the first place. .
