P2P Roaming Chat

fexter writes "A coder called Brendan Reville has released BrendanLand, which he claims is "the world's first peer2peer application where each participant serves their own piece of geography in the overall world." Basically, everyone walks around and chats. But each person gets to design their own piece of land, and everyone roams between these lands. It's all free, and the website has lots of technical notes and a developer diary." Oviously this is hugely basic stuff, but conceptually there is a lot of potential cool ideas. But for now it looks just silly ;)

    imagine a napster-style network
where you just walk & talk....
    a massive universe where you
    create your own land..
    it's here!

::the world's first peer2peer application in which each person serves their own piece of geography in a larger world ::

    introduction
BrendanLand is an online universe where you walk & talk.
    1. Just download the BrendanLand program for Windows. Install it. Begin it.
    2. First, edit your own little world... plant trees, place rocks and arrange grass. Make it a cool little place!
    3. Then, connect to BrendanLand. Walk around. All of a sudden, people can walk into your little land, and you can walk to the lands of everybody else.

Everybody serves their own little piece of the BrendanLand universe. You can roam this interconnected universe and chat to people. It's that simple!

    download
Just email Brendan(brendan@brendanland.com) and he'll tell you where to download the software.
(This is being done so that we can manage the size of the community.)

This program requires Windows 95, 98, 2000 or XP, with DirectX 8 or later. If the BrendanLand program tells you that DirectX is required, you can download DirectX.

First edition released. Known bugs, but hey, it's fun when it works!

Client and server software is currently under development.

    the BrendanLand experience...

When you first start BrendanLand, you can create your own little land, placing tiles and objects.

Give your land a name as well.

Once you've saved your land, you can begin your client. Choose your avatar, and then connect to the Master Server.
The Master Server will send you off to visit the central land. If you're the first person on the network, this will be your own land. Walk around and admire the Programmer Artwork(TM).
Now, just imagine that - at the same time - your friend on the other side of the world has created her own land.

    ...
Now you should walk completely off the edge of your own land. There will be a pause, and then, like magic, the Master Server will send you off to your next destination.

And hooray, all of a sudden you're on your friend's land, served all the way from the other side of the world!

Now your friend connects to the Master Server too, and like magic, you're both in your friend's land. Try chatting to each other! Walk around while you chat. You can even play a game of tag!

You can both walk off the edge of this land and end up somewhere else. Maybe you'll end up back in your own land, or maybe in some other person's land. So long as people are connected to the BrendanLand network, there will be new lands to visit.

The Master Server manages the layout of all these interconnected lands.

That's about it. It's this easy. (When it's working, that is!)

Why is this redundant? Obviously the moderators haven't read "Snow Crash". Lame.
