Real Genius Now Available on DVD

While perusing the Onion today, I came across this review of Real Genius on DVD. No longer must we lower ourselves to watching crumbling VCR tapes of this movie copied off of Cinemax in the early 90s.

YESTERDAY we were at war with the MPAA, today we are not. Today we LOVE the MPAA, and we have always LOVED the MPAA. They provide us with our much-needed prolefeed. TOMORROW we will once again be at war with the MPAA, and we will have ALWAYS been at war with the MPAA. If any of this is confusing, please report to the Slashdot Ministry of Truth in CowBoiKneel's basement immediately.

Sure, we "hate" the MPAA. But do we hate the movie producers? The directors, actors, and writers? Do we stop being entertained simply because we don't like a single trade organization operating "on behalf" of those moviemakers?

Come on. A /. mention of Real Genius on DVD isn't about advertising an MPAA product, it's about a great movie. One with more quotable lines than just about any other movie, other than the Grail.

Don't like the MPAA? Fight *them*, not the movie industry they purport to represent.

This "don't we hate the MPAA?" crap is getting old.

In this case, its not the MPAA we should hate, its Val Kilmer. Don't get me wrong, he was great in Real Genius and Top Secret -- but after that -- sucky sucky. We shold make a concerted effort to not watch any of his movies in order to ensure that he doesn't make any more. ;)

...wha? Yes, I know what Real Genius is about. An article about how accurate the science is in the film would maybe even qualify. I just don't think DVDs releases are terribly scientific. Unless you consider marketing a science.

You know what no extras means... It means they are probably are going to release another two other cuts (I am probably dreaming on this) of this movie with extras features on each.

It almost appears that is what Movie Distributors are doing these days. They will take a popular movie release it to DVD with barely anything on it at $19.99 to $29.99. Then you will see retail stores start dropping the price. Eventually you see a special edition release then a director's cut then a criterion release etc etc...

Its all geared to make you blow money to buy a movie 3 to 4 times over. ....

Just look at Frank Herbert's Dune, the one released off Sci-Fi.

They just put out the Director's Cut with 30 minutes more material... Wooohooo and new packaging... *sigh*
