Design Hardware/Software for Global Civil Society

-cman- writes "White box builders and Gnome hackers take note! With the announcement of various oxymoronic "trusted computing" initiatives in recent week, Bruce Sterling, self-appointed Pope-Emperor of the Viridian Design Movement has announced a new design contest to design a '...genuinely trustable, cheap, well-designed, rugged, sexy, accessible computer system that is owned, manufactured and operated for, well, Global Civil Society.'" I'll buy one.

Sorry you've been outbidden. Look at the actual text of the prize of this contest: (this is not a joke!!)

"Yes indeed! No fewer than 150 Euros, a staggering one hundred and fifty of 'em! And that's not all! Because if Microsoft (like so many other large American companies) turns out to have some major accounting skeletons in its closet, the value of these Euros could skyrocket overnight.

Furthermore, these Euro bills represent an intriguing state-of-the-art in high-security, trustable, paper-money design. Unlike feeble old dollars, they've got uncopiable color schemes, state-of-the-art security strips and big embedded holograms!

Win this contest and this cash will be mailed straight to you!"

It's that last sentence that grabbed my attention. Ye Gods, can you imagine what would happen if Microsoft's UberFortune turns out to be ficticious?

The Dunkirk Effect: Understanding rampant homosexuality among British Males

(from: World Social Science Review, Fall 1999)

For years social anthropologists have sought to understand the ever-increasing occurrence of homosexual behavior among British males - specifically England, where among 18-45 year olds, homosexuals males now outnumber heterosexual males by a ratio of 5:1.

Even the royal family (no strangers to homosexuality) have taken an interest in this issue through the Queens Better Tomorrow Foundation. The BTF funded research into the roots of this social shift - in part - because of the obvious impact that a growing "out" homosexual population might have on the population growth of the UK as a whole. The BTF concluded that, if the current trend continues, less than 1% of Englishmen will be heterosexual by the year 2025, making England an almost completely homosexual country within one generation.

"Imagine a country of entirely gay men, and you will be imagining England in 25 years..."

Some researchers believe one theory; dubbed "The Dunkirk Effect" may explain why homosexuality is increasing in the United Kingdom (specifically England) when it seems to have leveled off or decreased in almost every other country in the world (except for Arabic countries). The Dunkirk Effect theorizes that two brutal world wars drained the United Kingdom of most of its more masculine population. This phenomenon, coupled with a society that many believe promotes effeminate behavior in young men promulgates a "culture of gayness"

That would mean, that since there is an aproximate 1:1 ratio of men and women, that there is a 6:1 women:heterosexual-men ratio.

Well - I'm straight - maybe I should move to England and get me some of that english poon tang
