The Mod Squad

Devil's BSD writes "Popular Science has a new article in this month's issue about gaming mods. It contains a nice history of mods, touches on mods for the Big Three gaming systems today (as well as those for computer games), and a beginner's guide to mods. Interesting, but not much new for the l33t h4x0rs out there though."

Yea, nostalgia is great isn't it? We all remember our first video game, our first great job, and of course, the first time we saw this.

Wasn't there a Counterstrike High School Mod? Or do I mix this up with the real world, since we read about that once a year in the news.

It is now official. Netcraft confirms: *Slashdot is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered *Slashdot community when IDC confirmed that *Slashdot market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that *Slashdot has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. *Slashdot is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last [samag.com] in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a Kreskin [amdest.com] to predict *Slashdot's future. The hand writing is on the wall: *Slashdot faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for *Slashdot because *Slashdot is dying. Things are looking very bad for *Slashdot. As many of us are already aware, *Slashdot continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

FreeSlashdot is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time FreeSlashdot developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: FreeSlashdot is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

OpenSlashdot leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of OpenSlashdot. How many users of NetSlashdot are there? Let's see. The number of OpenSlashdot versus NetSlashdot posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 NetSlashdot users. Slashdot/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of NetSlashdot posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of Slashdot/OS. A recent article put FreeSlashdot at about 80 percent of the *Slashdot market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 FreeSlashdot users. This is consistent with the number of FreeSlashdot Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, FreeSlashdot went out of business and was taken over by SlashdotI who sell another troubled OS. Now SlashdotI is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

All major surveys show that *Slashdot has steadily declined in market share. *Slashdot is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If *Slashdot is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. *Slashdot continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, *Slashdot is dead.

    Fact: *Slashdot is dying

      Dear sir,

I have really been swayed by your effective argument; I now believe, as you do, that Slashdot is dying. But I think we can reverse this horrible trend. Please, tell me, how can I help save Slashdot?

      Respectfully yours,
